An Alternate UFC: Because I SUCK Online

I love UFC Undisputed. It's a great game with a lot of depth. However, I seem to have a bit of a problem. I can play against the CPU on "Advanced" and have a challenging fight...most times. Yet, when I go online, I find myself a victim of lag or of a punch/kick abuser. Sometimes both. It really confuses me since I play on an advanced level against the CPU. I would think that I could at least compete against online players.

However, I still love the game and since Career mode only spans 7 years and can become repetitive, I wanted to find another way to play. Last night I came up with an idea that I feel can be entertaining and can be shared with the rest of VSN: An alternate UFC.

Just like a 'chise or dynasty, this would be a report on a virtual UFC. What I would/will do is follow the next two UFC cards (99 and 100) as they are IRL with slight modifications to the match-ups (i.e. a fighter is not in the game that is on the card IRL, so a comparable fighter replaces him), and then start making my own cards based off of the results of the previous cards. It would allow for me to create rivalries, stir up old rivalries, retire fighters, bring fighters over from other organizations ***hint, hint*** and even create fighters to introduce them to the organization.

I have actually already finished UFC 99: The Comeback this afternoon. The way it would work is that I will use random.org and use a virtual coin-flip to decide who I will control during the fight. Red corner = heads and Blue corner = tails. I will report on the PPV cards and it will help to further the career of younger guys and will allow them to earn a shot at the title.

Hope you will follow along and enjoy. Feel free to provide ideas for matches, etc. I will try to make it as realistic as possible. I personally have only been following the UFC since January (UFC 94).

June 13, 2009: Maincard:

Lightweight Match: Spencer Fisher V Rich Clementi (me)
A quick fight that saw Rich Clementi win by TKO 1:48 into the first round. Clementi began the fight by punishing Fisher with quick jabs and a consistent left hook. Clementi stayed low and was able to keep Fisher off balance. Fisher actually came out looking slow and ill-prepared for the fight. Clementi finished Fisher off after knocking him to the ground and landing five straight punches to Fisher's face.
Result: Rich Clementi wins by TKO 1:48 into 1st round


Welterweight Match: Marcus Davis V Amir Sadollah (me)
Another quick match. However, it was brutal from the start. Both fighters came out of the gate swinging. After about a minute and a half of trading jabs, both fighters slowed the fight down. Amir Sadollah initiated moving the fight to the ground. Unfortunately for Sadollah, Davis was able to reverse a Sadollah takdown and lock Sadollah into an arm-bar which resulted in a severe physical drain on Sadollah's stamina. Once Sadollah was able to get on his feet, Davis was there to greet him with a punishing left hook that put Sadollah to sleep.
Result: Marcus Davis wins by KO 2:21 into 1st round


Welterweight Match: Mike Swick (me) V Ben Saunders
A grueling match that saw both fighters match shot for shot. Swick and Saunders both excelled on the ground with transitions and reversals. It was the most technical match of the night and the longest. With thirty seconds remaining in the 2nd round, Ben Saunders was able to lock in a arm-bar on Swick which resulted in Swick tapping out.
Result: Ben Saunders wins by tap-out (arm-bar) 4:30 into 2nd round


Headline/Heavyweight Match: Cheick Kongo V Cain Velasquez (me)
Kongo is a free-style fighter who stalked Velasquez around the ring the entire fight. Velasquez seemed content to wait for Kongo to come to him. Kongo continued to reign down with kicks to the head and superman punches. However, Velasquez was able to take his shots when Kongo left himself open and vulnerable. Velasquez, stunned twice, would shoot for a takedown when it appeared he may be in trouble. The strategy worked for Velasquez as he was able to survive the first round. Velasquez came out connecting on five straight left hooks to start the second round which put Kongo on the mat. Velasquez finished him off with a few more punches to the face before the fight was stopped.
Result: Cain Velasquez wins by TKO 0:56 into 2nd round


Main Event/Light Heavyweight Match: Wanderlai Silva V Rich Franklin (me)
The evenings Main Event did not disappoint as "The Axe Murderer" took on Rich Franklin. Franklin and Silva came out pounding each other with a flurry of kicks and punches. Silva seemed to be working Franklin's legs as he constantly went low with kicks exposing him to shots to the face by Franklin. Both fighters appeared content to trade shots throughout the 1st round. Franklin was also able to score some additional points with takedowns of Silva as well. Late in the 1st round, Franklin was limping due to damage done by Silva and was saved by the bell. Silva and Franklin started the 2nd round much like they did the 1st - whaling away on each other. Franklin successfully opened up Silva's forehead with continued jabs and hooks. Franklin was finally able to connect with a shot that put Silva down for good in the 2nd round handing him the victory.
Result: Rich Franklin wins by KO 1:42 into 2nd round

No. I am still going to do that. I'm just not going to play other guys online or in career mode anymore. Besides the VFC, I will just be doing this. VFC = CAF and this allows me to use a lot of different guys and add a different element to it.

St-Pierre Anxious for Bout with Alves

Georges St-Pierre thinks fans attending UFC 100 will get their money's worth during his match with Thiago Alves

Las Vegas, NV --- Georges "Rush" St-Pierre (18-2) looks to defend his title for the third time on July 11th versus Thiago Alves (16-3). This will be Alves' first opportunity to fight for a title in the UFC, and Alves says he's ready.

"Georges is a great fighter. One of the best pound-for-pound...but come july eleventh...that belt is mine. I work too hard to fail."

While the fight is considered the "Headline Event" of the evening, UFC President Dana White has insisted that UFC 100 has two marquee matchups.

"We've never done anything like this before. Georges is one of the most professional and talented fighters to work with the UFC and Thiago has that raw, natural talent you don't see in all fighters," White said earlier in the week during the events conference call.

St-Pierre has declined interview requests during his training for the fight. However, he did release a statement through his trainer which stated:

"UFC 100 is going to be a historical night for everyone involved in the mixed martial arts community. I appreciate the continued opportunity that Dana White has given me to defend my title for all deserving participants. Thiago is a talented fighter who I respect very much. I look forward to competing against him, defending my title and proving that I am the best fighter...pound-for-pound in the UFC."

UFC 100 will be broadcast live on Pay-Per-View from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 11th 2009.

Definitely, that is what I was thinking! I want people to request fights based off of previous matches, etc. However, it may be a little while till that happens only because I want to generate enough interest first so that I can post a poll that will provide a decent enough sample size of a main event or #1 contender match people want to see. I definitely want people to give ideas for future cards. I plan on retiring some fighters, creating storylines when a certain Affliction fighter will join the UFC stable and even creating some VSN members. I mean, eventually the UFC roster needs to be expanded and that would be a perfect way.

I'm in the middle of finishing the UFC 100 card now. Some really great fights to share...especially the Fitch/Parisyan match. I should finish later this afternoon and have the stories up by tonight.

Also, any ideas on the UFC 101 card? I am definitely going to have Penn V Florian as the Main Event. Any ideas for other matches though?

Aww I wanted Penn v GSP The third... but what about the bout from the demo... Rua and Liddell? that would bring back old times when only the demo was out... lols

Well, I am trying to be as realistic as possible in terms of scheduling as well. I have GSP on the card for UFC 100, I probably won't have him fighting again till UFC 106 or so.

I still have to finish Lesnar V Mir, but, thus far, GSP v Alves was AWESOME! I can't wait to share that one!

Liddell is an unknown right now. I may retire him or may have him participate in a few more fights.

It is on the card now as the Headline Event, so I may just include that as well. That would put 2 of the 5 matches needed out of the way. However, the Silva vs Griffin fight is not a title match IRL...not sure if I should make it a title match. I may actually hold off with Silva vs Griffin and put that on UFC 102 and make it the Main Event and a title match.

Brock Lesnar did not mince words after his match with Frank Mir


July 11, 2009 - Maincard

Lightweight Match: Mac Danzig (me) V Gray Maynard
Maynard scored 5 successful takedowns and a knockdown in the first round against Mac Danzig. However, Maynard was unable to take advantage of his position on the mat. Each time the fight went to the floor, Danzig was able to reverse any transition Maynard attempted or was able to stall till the fighters were ordered back to their feet. Additionally, Danzig had a handful of unsuccessful submission attempts. Danzig dominated the match from his feet and was able to score the TKO victory over four minutes into the second round.
Result: Mac Danzig wins by TKO 4:14 into the 2nd round


Light Heavyweight Match: Dan Henderson (me) V Michael Bisping
This match between the two TUF coaches garnered a lot of attention. The fight itself was over before the end of the first round, but, it certainly did not appear to be moving at a rapid pace. Both fighters traded punches and kicks throughout the round, but, a lot of dancing around the octagon was also present. Henderson eventually took the fight to the mat by shooting for a takedown of Bisping and was successful. Henderson was able to keep Bisping on the ground for over a minute by utilizing some ground and pound and blocking any transition attempt Bisping made. Henderson attempted to put Bisping into an arm-bar before Bisping reversed out of the lock in a daze. Bisping stumbled to his feet and attempted a take-down of Henderson before being met with an upper-cut that laid him out on the mat. Henderson quickly jumped of Bisping and finished the fight before referee Herb Dean stepped in declaring the TKO victory for Henderson just seconds before the end of the first round.
Result: Dan Henderson wins by TKO 4:42 into the 1st round


Welterweight Match: Jon Fitch (me) V Karo Parisyan
Knockout of the night! Not much to say here. Jon Fitch opened the fight by missing with a left hook. Karo Parisyan fired back and connected on his first punch...it was all she wrote. Jon Fitch fell to the mat out cold. The fight lasted 11 seconds.
Result: Karo Parisyan wins by KO 0:11 into the 1st round


Headline Event/Welterweight Championship: Georges St-Pierre (Title Holder) V Thiago Alves (me)
FIGHT OF THE NIGHT! Challenger Thiago Alves started aggressive by shooting for a takedown of St-Pierre immediately. Alves was successful in getting St-Pierre to the ground. However, the champ quickly turned the tables around on Alves by transitioning out of full-guard and sweeping Alves to gain control. Alves simply held on as best he could to limit St-Pierre gaining more of an advantage. Once Alves was able to get back to his feet he found himself on his back five more times due to St-Pierre takedowns. It was clear that St-Pierre's strategy was to keep the fight on the ground and look for a quick submission. Alves was able to fight off St-Pierre's only submission attempt and arm-bar. Once Alves was on his feet he worked St-Pierre's body and landed a couple of kicks to the head. St-Pierre continued to dominate the ground game through the second round and looked to be in total control of the fight heading into the third round. Alves simply appeared to survive the second round. St-Pierre began the third round with another attempted takedown, however, Alves was able to defense the takedown and had St-Pierre on his stomach. Alves quickly transitioned and attempted to choke-out St-Pierre from behind. Unsuccessful in this attempt, Alves then transitioned again and passed St-Pierre's guard. In total control, Alves waited for St-Pierre to attempt a transition and threw down two hammer-fists knocking out St-Pierre to become the new Welterweight champion of the world!
Result: Thiago Alves wins by KO 1:01 into the 3rd round


Main Event/Heavyweight Championship: Brock Lesnar (Title Holder/me) V Frank Mir
Mir looked to put the fight on the mat almost immediately. Lesnar was able to defend against some of these, but, also found himself on his back on a few occassions. Lesnar, while on his back, was able to limit Mir's ability to inflict further damage with simple transitions or delay tactics. Lesnar actually attempted a guillotine early on in the hopes of getting an early submission. Mir, however, was able to break free. Once the fight was off the mat, Lesnar dominated. His striking ability was leaps and bounds better than Mir's. Lesnar was able to strike and continue moving making it difficult for Mir to counter-punch and often left him vulnerable. Early in the second round Lesnar dropped Mir to the mat and went to work with a few blows to the head. Unable to transition, Lesnar stood up and allowed Mir to get back onto his feet. Lesnar then connected on a upper-cut to Mir's chin which put him on the mat for good. Lesnar retains the Heavyweight title and avenges his UFC 81 loss to Frank Mir. After the match Lesnar stated that he felt there were more other heavyweights more deserving of a title shot than Frank Mir.
Result: Brock Lesnar wins by KO 2:16 into the 2nd round

Back for More - Matt Hughes Signs 3-Fight Contract with UFC



Former UFC Welterweight champion Matt Hughes isn't done just yet. The 35-year old fighter still has more goals to accomplish in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. Specifically, Hughes feels that he still has the ability and the skills to regain the Welterweight championship belt.

"I'm very excited that Dana [White] wanted me back. I feel like I can still compete against the best of the best and that is what the Welterweight division is...the best."

Hughes won't find many willing to argue that point. The Welterweight division is stacked with talent and Hughes only adds to that talent. Asked if Hughes would have an opportunity to fight for the title again, UFC President Dana White said, "We'll see. Matt is a tremendous fighter and it would not surprise me one bit if he were to win the title again. But nothing is guaranteed."

Hughes has struggled against the elite of the Welterweight division losing recent bouts to Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves, but, Hughes says that is what keeps him going.

"I've had some good fights with Georges, but, he has gotten the best of me the last two fights and I'd definitely like another shot at him," Hughes said.

No date has been set for Hughes return to the Octagon. However, rumors have already started that it could be at UFC 106 or 107 with a bout against Georges St-Pierre or Diego Sanchez.
