RROD repairs apparently have exceeded Microsofts alotted $1 billion

Here's a related article but I just read a small article in Game Informer that said that apparently repair costs have exceeded the $1 BILLION MS set aside when they finally admitted the the manufacturing problems with the 360 on 2008.

Having a larger install base is great and all but we all know these companies are in it for the money. I wonder what MS'S bottom line really is after over a BILLION in losses?

That is just an insane amount of money.

Maybe this is why they are fucking us over with overpriced DLC and arcade games?

I dunno if Bill Gates and Co. wipe their ass with that type of money but I'd sure as hell say that the business model for the XBox 360 hasn't exactly gone according to plan...

I.E., They'll go broke if their consumer base switches to Sony due to their brand not breaking down every few months or so.

Sad part is it wont happen, so many kids ask their parents to buy video game consoles for them and they buy them the supershitty wii or the price friendly 360 compared to the PS3.

My cousin asked his mom for a ps3 for Christmas and she bought him a 360 and told him "the ps3 has a bunch of problems, im buying you the more reliable one" lmao, hes had the red rings 2x since Christmas 07.

If it werent for the stupendous failure rates i'd have a 360 over a PS3 myself. Its obviously the game developers platform of choice due to the higher user base.

yes because they are the only gaming system charging those high rates for DLC and arcade games

They basically are. Look at Gears of War and Halo map packs compared to Killzone, Resistance or Warhawk packs. And I think it's pretty well documented that XBLA are way overpriced compared to PSN games. PSN also seems to have a lot more in the way of creative and new PSN games as compared to XBLA's rehashed retro games. But that's for another discussion.

You mean being able to share games on up to five consoles on PSN? Good point. I slept on that.

You're exactly right. But the fact, and it is a fact, is that MS takes more of the profit from the games then what Sony does. I've read about and heard about (on podcasts) of how MS's contracts with companies give them the bigger part of the profit margin. Which makes the overall price of the game more expensive because the developer has to make money somehow. I have no idea about Nintendo.

That's pretty much the bottom line. It was a genius decision to beat Sony to market with the next console.

But I couldn't care less. I'm a gamer, period. I just want a console(s) that don't break all the fucking time. When the 360 is working it's a great console.

I was listing to the Gamer Husbands podcast the other day and I think they summed it up best. A listener wrote in with a question asking all of the hosts if they were stranded on a desert island which ONE console would they want to have. I figured most if not all would say 360 because it seems that they are very pro 360 when listening to them. But everyone answered PS3. And what did most of them say? "At least I know the PS3 isn'y going to break on me."

I don't know what it is or if I'm doing something different. Maybe I'm just damn lucky.

I have 2 Xbox360's. Once since launch and another one since last January/Feb of 08. Never had a problem with either of them. No RROD's or nothing.

I don't do anything special. I have it on a stand by the tv, turn it on when I wanna play it, turn if off when I'm done.

Even still, paying previously-exclusive companies to bring their games to multi-platform, or even exclusive on 360(Fatal Inertia...which ended up a bust anyways) put a dent in sony.

However, i'm not ready to say microsoft's won the war just yet; this war as a whole has been pretty weak. the Heavy-Hitting stuff isn't consistent enough.

While I don't count the Wii as in this war(and they are, but it's really the battle of 2nd place between XB360/PS3), they pretty much got where they are by tapping into a different demographic, with a different perspective.

The Wii is it's own beast. I don't think anyone considers it a "hardcore" system like 360 or PS3. Even Sony and MS never considered it a threat in their initial plans.

Unfortunately no one can turn back the clock here. But I can guarantee you things would be different had the roles been reversed. MS has pissed off a lot of people, including myself, by making two asshole decisions.
                              1) Releasing the 360 only four years after the release of Xbox and then completely abandoning the Xbox to boot.
                              2) Releasing the 360 well before it was ready and cutting corners in the process.

It all stems to one thing. They wanted to beat Sony to market. In the long run it was still the best decision, even if they are paying out the ass to this day. Now they can look forward to the next generation with the huge market share they stole from PS gamers, and also capitalize on the huge mistakes they made this generation.
