Games that changed your mind about a genre?

I made a thread like this back at MM. The thread about favorite FPS's sparked my memory.

I remember being completely ignorant to FPS's. At the time they were basically PC only and I always associated PC games with nerds. I still don't play games on PC to this day (for many reasons, not because of nerds, LOL). I did finally give Red Faction a chance on PS2.

I never finished that game but I still loved it. I remember it being pretty lengthy. I got to a part after a rail car crashes. There are all these enemies with rail guns that would kill you in one shot. Fucking bullshit.

    Now I love FPS's.

Who else played a game from a genre that they never thought they would like but did?

      Red Faction was great.

Oblivion (and Pokemon sort of) changed my mind about RPGs

I had never played FPS games and didn't think I liked them until I played COD4 at a friend's house, and now I'm hitched.

I was never a huge fan of FPS's until CoD4, although I still will take a third person shooter any day of the week over a similar FPS. Also, I never really played an RPG until Oblivion. Never beat the game but it was still fun as hell.

Madden changed my mind about football games. Madden 09 was the first ever madden I had. Never thought of getting a football game till I rented madden 09. I was terrible but it was fun as hell. Still play 09 and 10 to this day.

Never liked 3rd person shooters until Gears of War.

Landstalker changed my mind about what RPGs could be.

Knights of the Old Republic convinced me to never play an RPG or star wars game ever again.

GTA 4 convinced me beating up hoes and old ladies gets old very very quickly.

Portal reminded me that often a simple concept and great design can make an ugly looking game into all time greatness.

                  On that note...

Madden 06 made me realize that EA had no intention of designing a modern game. Content to build off of a 6 yr old engine for next gen it killed off any hopes of a decent next gen football game.

Dragon Age: Origins has made me reconsider RPG's after buying Mass Effect and barely playing it. I plan on going back to it and playing it before I even think of picking ME2.

I didn't like RPGs until I got Baldurs Gate...and I hated strategy games until I got my teenage hands on Starcraft back in 98.

Gears of War was probably the game that got me into fps online.
