Except for a few select titles that I buy new, I buy almost all of my games used. And the titles that I do buy new, I will usually sell back when I beat them or get tired of them for about half price or more. I like to get the most value out of my games for the least amount of money and I'm not the only one who does this.

They are taking away your options in favor of them having more control over how you buy and own your games. They are trying to shift the mentality of gaming from "ownership" to "rented experience" and packaging it as if that is good for you. And they wonder why piracy is such a big issue these days. That's great that you don't mind paying new price for your games or you don't mind paying a second time to digitally download a game that you once owned a previous system. I do mind these things. If none of these things bother you, then more power to you, I guess.

the only reason i see them having a drive is for backwards compatability.

there is no other reason for a disc drive.

According to gaming websites, reports have shown that only half of the xboxs sold are connected to the internet. If they move to digital downloads only then you are cutting off half the market.

They might move to SD cards or some shit like that but MS is not ready to cut out the retailers yet and they know cable internet is not as prevalent as we think it should be.

The Steam console won't allow it, because I'm confident they bring the same pricing structure to that console. Valve does not come off as a company who intends on acquiring every penny they can squeeze out of the consumer.

MS/Sony won't be able to compete with Valve should they translate the Steam platform to the console market as it currently stands on the PC. They will have to match their pricing.

The door could reopen for a rental experience that has been lost because placed like Blockbuster were run out of business. If I can pay like 10 bucks to download say...a game like Assassin's Creed for a time period (to bury gamefly), (AC3 I would never buy new because I'd just want to beat the game once and shelve it), there could be a means to revive the rental market.

I can also forsee packaged content. So say EA says, give us $200 bucks and you can have 5 sports titles for the year.

Maybe they'll make a USB dvd drive for backwards compatibility? Who knows. Too little has been said to really worry this much right now.

There's just as many positive possibilities as there are negative, at the end of the day it's up to you to do what you want to do with your money. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything.

TO be honest I think the whole video game model is going to change. Valve has said they made 12x more revenue when the made Team Fortress free to play.

The old model is you sell the game and that is the last chance you have to make any money on that game...done. Now we have moved to DLC....you still have to purchase the game though. I think games will move to more of a service model. Sort of like League of Legends, Team fortress, the WoW model. Free to play but if you want to keep playing or experience more of this game you will need to pay. The game will continue to evolve and will continue to be developed as long as the cash keeps coming in. Free to play is coming, there is no barrier to entry and you open it up to millions of users to at least try it out.

I don't collect old games, so that's why I don't care about rebuying something digitally. I don't need 100's of games piled up all over my house in the off chance I might want to pop one in someday. The funny thing is, the switch to digital will eventually remove anyone even having to rebuy stuff, because there won't be a need to ever replace a physical copy.

Basically, if you like to buy and sell, that's fine. I do too. But if I lost it for the convenience of digital, I'd be happier. It's not like I ever make money off of re-selling games anyway. If anything, best case scenario I blow through it quickly and lose anywhere from 20-25$.

The F2P model is genious. Persistent online games are digital crack. Get people addicted and then nickel and dime.

Everyone wants the edge or advantage, so they will pay like crazy.

Next console generation will be very different, I agree. I don't think it will be as bad as some believe though.

If you want to read about how Valve took a chance on a new business model for gaming it is paid off big time. Other developers will follow.

I even forgot about all those free facebooks games where people drop $100's on nonsense.

I think the hardware guys need to look at this when building a new console if they even do.

I like this story about nickel and diming your customers on a F2P game

User spends $ 100,000 in Mafia Wars

Buying goods and services in virtual games like Mafia Wars or FrontierVille can be an addiction. A "former employee of Zynga," says that some people spend thousands of dollars in these games.

Anonymous publications in Reddit, allegedly by a former employee of Zynga, explain that there was a user to spend $ 100,000 just in Mafia Wars. The author of these articles says Zynga, publisher of casual games, treats those who spend a lot of money for Zynga Black, while those who just play without investing a cent are spam.

The former employee said she has seen a user to spend $ 20,000 in FrontierVille, reports Mashable.
That game was so bad too.

right there says it all. If I were a developer I would be trying to do this. We see more and more every year. I just don't know how it will work on a console.

World of Tanks, World of Planes, Age of Empire:Online, I think the new Mech Warrior on PC is going to be free.

It is going to be interesting what happens in the coming years.

It's already starting to work its way to consoles. For example, Mass Effect 3's multiplayer only allows for gathering new weapons, characters, bonus' and armor by buying weapon crates for 5000 credits, 20,000 credits (where you get an "uncommon") and 60000 credits (where you get a "rare). OR, you can pay $2 bucks for the 20,000 one and get it instantly, or $4 for the 60,000 one.

As a point of reference, a fairly good match in which my team completed all 11 waves and everyone was extracted, I got between 13-16,000 credits on Bronze (easy). It's basically the same concept, only even more devious than good F2P games because you're still simply purchasing the CHANCE at something good, where as with a lot of things you can buy the actual item.
