I just picked this game up last week thanks to Amazon's goldbox deal on Tuesday (it was 19.99 down to 12 after my GC's remaining balance). I was a little more comfortable getting into it because of it being a little more open to the general public, and man am I happy I got it. So much fun. Really loving every minute of it.

How much of a departure is it from the Forza proper series?

A lot. You're going from sim-style circuit racing to open world arcade street racing. The physics of Horizon are a little closer to sim style than most arcade racers. Most everything is toned down like car selection (which is still good) and tuning.
