with an MMO you will pay that company subscription either way. But at least on a pc u get better games, free online play and 9/10 times a price point that is lower. plus all the mods.
I agree. But at least with PS+ you're getting tons of free games and crazy discounts. Yes, you're forced to have it now but you do get tons of benefits.

Paying to play online was a bad precedent that I wish never would've happened.

Hate to play devil's advocate, because in principle I agree with you, but without paying for online, do we have the kind of services that PS+ and XBL provide right now, at their current level of quality?

I'm sure that we would still have subscription levels for MMO games, as they have dedicated servers and still have to pay staff to continuously monitor, patch, upgrade, content additions, etc. But how would games like Call of Duty, Madden, Battlefield be affected, if at all?

That's a good point. I honestly have no answer for you.

I do remember an article a while back that sepcifically focused on MS and Xbox Live and how maintaining the service cost them next to nothing and it was almsot 100% profit. Even with that they were trying to monetize it by littering every inch with ads.

As long as PC players don't come out saying the game is complete trash in the two months that we have to wait for the console version.

steam offers a complete online experience for no charge. i dont think the consoles offer anything that steam doesnt have in regards to the online gaming experience. you got voice chat, friends lists, invite system...all the same things you get from the consoles. all the DLC. they just dont have all those things outside of gaming that the consoles have. but 90% of that stuff is accessible on the PC anyways.

im not at all excited about the pay per month thing. if the game was free and you could pay $15 per month to play...ok, then i could get 3 months for the price of the game. But this buying a $60 game then paying to play it is unacceptable imo. It is ES, but i dont think that is enough of a value for me to pay that money.

I actually wasn't even aware of that. I assumed the game WAS free and you just paid for the subscription. $60 plus sub?!? Wow.

ridiculous isnt it...with guild wars 2 you bought the game and thats it. with star wars i bought the game, but got a month free. i didnt pay for any monthly fees. Talk about a horrible precedent.

imagine the backlash if EA made people pay $60 for Madden, then charged a $15 monthly fee to play it online. with the amount of traffic that game gets its gotta be comparable to the costs of a MMO server

Yep, it's an investment for sure.

I've done it with some other MMO's and really really enjoyed it. I've done it with some others and got burnt.

Guess it just depends individually how much you're going to play it. No one with a gun to anyones head to buy it or not.

I guess the plus side for me (and console only gamers) are that they get to hear two months worth of feedback from PC players on whether it's a quality game or not.
