[ALL] EA is going 100% digital....

The major publisher has officially announced that it will be going entirely digital in the near future. The exact word used by president Frank Gibeau was "inevitable". But Madden won't be disappearing off the shelves tomorrow.
Gibeau sums it up thusly:"Retail is a great channel for us. We have great relationships with our partners there. At the same time, the ultimate relationship is the connection that we have with the gamer. If the gamer wants to get the game through a digital download and that's the best way for them to get it, that's what we're going to do."

This won't be a sudden change but a gradual shift. Still, Gibeau notes that last year digital was a growing sector for the publisher collecting $1.2 billion in revenue. Experiments such as Battlefield 3 Premium have been extremely successful.
Nonetheless statements like this likely have GameStop executives ordering antacids in bulk and console makers taking notes. Digital has considerable appeal to publishers: They can sell you the games directly and once you buy them you can't sell them used.

EA going entirely digital would pull dozens of franchises and developers out of stores. It will obviously take time for EA to fully transition. But this heralds what will be a major shift in gaming over the next few years.

The only thing worse than having to drive 25 miles to get a game is waiting for it to download.

Trying to download a game at midnight release would be fucking awful.

Especially with everyone trying to get to it. It is going to be a nightmare, and I probably won't even be worrying about games on release day if it goes all digital.

they will likely allow you to d/l a week prior and render the game unplayable until the actual release date, rendering your fears pointless. this is common in PC games.

Exactly. I mean shit, some of the bigger DLC is already a pain in the ass to download on release day, let alone a full fledged game.

I'd be all for this if it actually cut costs, but it won't. It will just mean that the developers will make a greater cut of the $60, while customers get less overall.

This is an interesting move, but you have to wonder how many lost sales will be out there in the console market because potential buyers don't have a great internet connection. I don't think much would change in the PC side since Origin (and an internet connection) is required for most of their recent games.

Except that EA will still charge $60 for a new release.

I'm no expert on market competition but would they not have to charge the same as what the retailers are charging?

Exactly. They will still charge $60 for it, nothing will change in a positive way.
