I'm pretty sure the game pad charging cradle plugs into the back of the console. But I'm not home so I'm not sure.

The gamepad is charged from an outlet not the console

I've read sites showing what controllers the system will support (depending on game) and would rather use a controller that has the "classic" feel. I've also seen people mod N64/NES/SNES controllers to be used but I'm not into modding things. The last thing I opened up was my broken X360 to do the penny trick (lasted an extra year).
It's a very good controller. I don't know the current price, but I got one with my system for like $35 bucks and feel like it was VERY worth it. It's fought over by any of my friends, over the Gamepad or the Wiimotes/Classic Controller combo.

That being said, I personally have grown to love the Gamepad, outside of Nintendo nonsensical focus on trying to also make it a motion controller with some games (thankfully, you can usually get around that easily). I love heavy controllers, and it is the heaviest, I love that you can, like you said, plug it in at bed and play games on there. Over Thanksgiving, I took the Wii U home to my Mom's, and it was great to have the option of using the Gamepad only if need be. It's a really, really great system.

The Gamepad is great for playing while you're laying down in bed and somebody else wants to use the TV. I put in some solid time on my Gamepad, but now it's broken and the touch is unresponsive most times or will randomly work for a few seconds, need to send it back in.

So I'm thinking of having Best Buy pm Target's sale on this tomorrow. Still not sure. Can someone sell me on this? Smash Bros would be my go-to game. What are some good games for this? I tried one at Target today for about ten minutes, my first time playing one.

Um... My top 3 are easily:

                Super Smash Bros
                Mario Kart 8
                Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

                With very honorable mentions:

                Super Mario 3D World
                New Super Mario Bros
                Wind Waker HD

DK Tropical Freeze is beyond amazing, a must own IMO, and Mario Kart and Smash are no-brainers, especially if you have family/friends of any sort to play locally with you, online is also a blast.
