Developers React to PlayStation 4 <-- link

Tim Sweeney, Epic Games Founder and CEO

As we're building games that are an order of magnitude more detailed than the current generation, Unreal Engine 4's tools combined with PlayStation 4's hardware enable developers to achieve that in a reasonable amount of time and on-budget. Our console efforts are focused on high-end, mainstream platforms that will be supported by enormous launches and large-scale support by major developers and publishers.

With PlayStation 4, Sony has defined an ideal next-generation platform with massive appeal to core gamers, and incredible potential for bringing triple-A experiences to the next level.

Ted Price, Insomniac President and CEO

The Share button has me the most excited. It's visually the most subtle new feature but potentially the most powerful. As most gamers know, hooking up and sharing with your friends is a super-gratifying aspect of gaming today. But it can be a convoluted process depending on the game and the hardware. If it truly does become a one-button press to connect with your friends it'll be a big step forward for games.

      David Goldfarb, Overkill Game Director

I guess I didn't see anything -- in terms of software -- that I was genuinely excited about.

I think the irony for me is that "next-gen console" is mostly playing catch-up with PCs, so if they aren't innovating on other axes I think it's going to be a rough transition for everyone.

      Josh Tsui, Robomodo President

One pleasant thing that was implied a couple of times is that PS4 is a game machine first and foremost. Games being what leads the experience. I personally like that a lot. Doesn't mean I won't use Netflix on it, but it means that I know where I can turn for a quick game fix. I hope they keep to that promise and make sure that the UX is game-centric.

Stewart Gilray, Just Add Water CEO

PS4 is a dream. It's as they said: incredibly easy to develop for and extremely powerful. Having 8GB of DDR5 ram is staggering, as the speed that the data can be shifted around outstrips that 8GB. However, as a smallish indie, to us it's not about what we can do, it's about what we can do well. 1080p, 60fps, 3D is where it's at, and so far we're blown away by what we've managed to achieve with the hardware. Currently our imaginations are running away with themselves.

Jared Gerritzen, Zombie Studios Creative Studio Head

With the PS4 announcement, the biggest thing I'm excited about is the evolved controller.

I have gotten my hands on the controller recently and I'm very happy to say the thumb sticks feel WAY better, and it was my biggest gripe about the PS3.

Not surprised that MS has streaming but surprised PS didn't lock down UStream (if true)....kinda of loss shine of bullet point on back of box. I guess it will depend who will do it better and I'm wondering if MS will give you a choice or was Twitch left out.

The worst part about this upcoming next gen are all of these cross-overs titles. Maybe my memory is failing but I only remember a few of them last gen, but of course only one console released (360) at that time. I remember Gun, Burnout Revenge and a few others. But this time we will have all these AAA titles like Destiny, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed 4 and several others released on current and next gen consoles. No matter how you slice it that is NOT good news. There is no way these developers can possibly split time between both versions (actually FIVE versions if you figure in 360, PS3, Next Xbox, PS4, WiiU) and have them be top quality.

It's just another reason for me to wait a year or so.

Yeah but I guarantee nobody is developing their games for both gens side by side. They are going to develop for one gen or the other, and then when it gets towards the end, they'll just port it for the other. Destiny and Watch Dogs are definitely being developed for next-gen, so just a scaled down port will come for current-gen. AC4 I'm not so sure, I could see that one being developed for either one and then ported to the other.

And come on, are you still trying to convince everyone that you're going to wait for next-gen? Lol, I don't think anyone believes you, and that was before you said a whole year. Come on, Twigg, it's time to be honest with yourself lol.

Assuming the rumored specs for the next Xbox are accurate, PC/PS4/nextbox won't have many differences, and developers will do what most of them do already for PC versions and simply offer better textures and graphical qualities than what you'll see on current gen hardware.

So either the nxt gen versions will be upscaled ports or current gen will get a low res/muddy texture port. Depending on how ambitious watchdogs actually ends up being, I actually can't wait to see the downgraded port to ps3/360 lol

N I can see twigg waiting... for a lil bit at least, the presser is over and the shine is wearin a lil low. I mean what's the price? What is the day 1 launch lineup? Where is the killer app? Will all those great sounding services and streaming capabilities be ready to go and working as expected on day 1?

I'm waiting till e3 to really decide on this day 1 shit, sony should have their launch info ready by then...I mean fuk...they may even show the god damn console by then...

If I was going to wait 6 mos to a year...I would just get it at launch...not sure what I would be waiting for.

From a sporting gamer POV, the 1st year in 1st gen usually doesn't have all the features of last gen. I'm pretty sure The Show will come out for PS3 & PS4 for at least 2 years and during that time the PS3 will have more features. It will be the better of the 2 except for the graphics and the same will be true for EA games and NBA 2K.

I already have money put aside for both systems....I am ready. If anything I wait might before getting both on day one assuming they launch close to each other...maybe get one and wait on the other. Launch lineup is important.

Unless Microsoft blows us away with their launch lineup, I think I'm going to go PS4 at launch and then pick up the Xbox just after Christmas. Doubt I can afford both right at launch.

If M$ announces Forza 5 in the launch window...you are fucked.

I know they will and it's going to make that decision so damn tough lol. Luckily my extended family only gifts cash for Christmas, so either way I wont have to wait too long.
