Not really the point. (Also, paying for online gaming started long before consoles became online devices. It's been "ok" for quite some time to pay for persistent online services)
PS+ service is worth it for what it provides to you today. They aren't changing the fee to now include it being required for online, so you still get all the cool features of the service that has made it popular.
MS sucks because their service was required and offered little to nothing else. At least they are giving some old games for a couple months to get people to hang on to their service.
The offerings aren't even comparable. People willingly pay for PS+ when they don't have to, who the shit would be paying for XBL if XBL had a free option?
