I am not a fanboy of either console, but I find it creepy that one console will use Kinect to detect if I'm in the room and wanna play my damn game. I just wanna play.

[RUMOR] Paul Thurrott: Next Xbox is expensive - 500$ or 300$ for subscription model

On the latest WhatTheTech podcast, Paul Thurrott weighed in on the NeXtbox rumors shared some info from his sources.

Apparently Microsoft is launching a 99$ Xbox 360 codenamed "Stingray" this November alongside of the Next Xbox.
According to Paul this is because the next Xbox isn't going to offer backwards compatibility for 360 games.

He mentions that it's going to be expensive. Apparently around 500$ for a normal unit, or 300$ for a subscription model.
It was also relayed to him that the device does indeed require a constant internet connection to function, although that is better discussed in this dedicated thread.

He also mentions that nothing that he has read about the next Xbox sounded negative to him.

        ...

Doubtful. Probably won't be as much of a push as Kinect was for them. Then you gotta take into account the people they lose every week with new news on the system.

The general gamer population are not reading this news.

Maybe in a "fad" type move like the Wii sold...but those all went to dust in a year or two.

But I'm not so sure. I can't see the "torrent/streaming" generation all that excited to stop using their PC's where they get this content for free....to buy a $500 box and pay for those services.

IMO I think MS might be predicting the Console gaming market as a shrinking one. They might be focusing more on streaming media on other features of a living room "do everything" box. Probably a reason why M$ has very few exclusives. Halo and Gears might be the only franchise that sells Xboxs.

But honestly we all don't know shit until M$ says something.

Well I know they've lost my business this fall if these rumors are true. So hey, good job Microsoft in predicting that.

True. Microsoft might even officially announce something to the contrary, but the always online and mandatory Kinect rumors have come up a lot. Unless the guys reporting these rumors are full of shit when they say they have trusted sources, there's enough to believe that Microsoft has at least seriously considered implementing those two features.

M$ could theoretically be using the always on fuckery to generate buzz, then come out at E3 and say it was just a ruse bros.

However, there is no ruse when it comes to their desire to make a media box. No way that's not accurate.
