              "Number of Courage"

Roy Lee "Chucky" Mullins, S, Ole Miss (1988-1989

Mullins was paralyzed while making a tackle in a game against Vanderbilt on Oct. 28, 1989. Despite months of grueling rehabilitation he never lost his positive spirit and was an inspiration for thousands. Although he never walked again, he returned to classes at Ole Miss in June 1990 to pursue a degree. He died of complications from blood clots caused by inactivity and poor circulation on May 6, 1991. In the spring of 1990 the Chucky Mullins Courage Award was created and presented to the Rebels' most outstanding defensive player who was given the honor of wearing Mullins' No. 38 for that season. The university retired the number 38 in 2006.

                            #35 FB/LB Alan Ameche - Wisconsin - 1951-1954

Ameche earned All-American honors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played linebacker as well as fullback in those single-platoon days. In four years as a Badger, he gained 3,212 yards, then the NCAA record, scored 25 touchdowns, and averaged 4.8 yards a carry. He won the Heisman in 1954. Ameche is one of six Wisconsin players whose number (35) has been retired, and one of four whose name and number appears on the Camp Randall Stadium façade (fellow Heisman winner and current career rushing record holder Ron Dayne (No. 33) Dave Schreiner (No. 80) and Pat Richter (No. 88) are the others).
