Just got off of work half an hour ago, updating now.

A Weight Lifted

"Everett looks beaten here as they are down by 14 going into the fourth quarter. Swindell is still struggling, throwing his sixth pick just moments ago."

Brad started to settle down a little, but ended up throwing two picks to one touchdown in the third quarter. He finally made a nice pass to me, which I took to the house to make it 24-21 Steelton, but then Jeremiah Young came right back with a touchdown of his own. He was tearing our defense a new asshole, rushing for 250 yards and his fourth touchdown, as we fell to being down by 10 again.

With four minutes to go John punched in another touchdown to make it 31-28 Steelton, and suddenly our team and our fanbase were believing again. Young ran down the field to get it to our 20 yard line, but then their drive stalled. It was fourth and one and the fate of the game was all put in one play.

"Here's the snap. Young takes the handoff up the gut, jumps...and is met in the air by Waltman! The Warriors stop them and keep their hopes alive!"

With 1:52 left on the clock, it all came down to one drive. One drive to determine our fate, one drive left to make a mark on Everett football forever. John and Zach split some carries to get us to the 47 yard line and suddenly we stalled. It was third and 13 and our hopes were dwindling.

"Swindell catches the snap, looks right, fires...caught by Ethan Woy! They convert a long third down to keep their hopes alive!"

The offense continued to drive down the field and with 36 seconds left, we were on the Steelton 19 yard line looking to take the lead. Brad caught the snap and looked towards the endzone. He threw it to me but it sailed over my head and out of bounds.

*TWEET*

"Intentional grounding, number 10 offense. Ten yards and loss of down, third down."

Just when things were going right, our offense started to seem like it was going in the wrong direction again. Brad started to look like he was losing confidence again, so I called a timeout to talk to him.

"What's going on man?"

"I don't know, my arm doesn't feel right."

"Did someone land on top of it?"

"I think so. The third down pass to you, I took a hit from their huge defensive tackle. I can throw but it hurts everytime I move it."

"This is the State championship, fuck the pain man. The corner covering me is getting tired of bumping me every play, I can tell. I don't think he's gotten a break yet and it's definitely showing."

"So you're telling me you want the ball then?"

"When don't I? I'm going to make a move to the outside and try to get a step on him on a fade route. Lead the pass so I have to reach out to get it. And don't get me killed by the safety."

"Gotcha. Let's go."

Brad called the play out of the huddle and we lined up in the formation. The cornerback got some wind back after the timeout, but I could still tell he was exhausted. I smirked at him as Brad called the cadence.

"BLUE, SET, ONE!"

I took a jab step to the inside, confusing the corner, and then made a swim move to start into my fade route. I easily had a step on him and called for the ball.

Brad threw all of his arm into the throw, and was in considerable pain as he released it. The ball was thrown perfectly - I caught it in stride and started sprinting towards the endzone. It felt like an earthquake the closer I made it to paydirt and when I finally crossed the goal line, the entire Everett section went wild.

"TOUCHDOWN EVERETT! With 22 seconds to go, Ethan Woy and the Warriors have taken their first lead of the enitre night! Unbelievable!"

I fell to knees and let the emotions overpower me. Here I was, crying over a game I consider a hobby? Like the announcer said, it was unbelievable.

We got a delay of game penalty after the touchdown, but Cory still kicked the extra point. After a few desperation throws by the Railers' quarterback, the horn sounded and we completed the Cinderella tale.

"And there's the horn! The Everett Warriors are your 2008 PIAA single-A State champions! What a dream season!"

The entire team ran out to the center of the field and started celebrating, with our student section right behind them. I stood there pondering what all I've been through. From being the big man on campus my junior year, to being the most hated athlete in town, and back has been an unforgettable journey. I'm finally back on top again and it feels so good.

We went to the stage they set up and received the State championship trophy. Reporters were trying to get comments from our most important players and eventually they made their way over to me.

"Ethan, congratulations on the championship. What is running through your mind right now?"

"Words can't describe how I feel right now. I've never thought I'd get emotional over a football game, but winning this has really hit me."

"Ethan, I know you'll be in college, but how can this team get back here next year?"

"They have a lot of pieces returning. Zach will be in the running for all-state consideration, and the linebacker core is solid. It'll be tough replacing Brad at quarterback, myself at the receiver position and the entire secondary, but if they can get some players in there, I could see another district title."

"Any final words for Jeremiah Young, Ethan?"

"Yeah I got six actually. Want a picture of my ring?"

And with that question, I walked off the stage and off the field my last time as an Everett Warrior, not as the goat, but as a champion; just how I wanted to go out.
