Catching Controversy | The Legend of Ethan Woy

First Impressions Are What People Remember You By

clutch (adj.) - tending to be successful in tense or critical situations

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And with that fifth foul, star senior Jake Beegle fouls out of this contest."

As the home fans booed the referee who made a controversial foul call, they noticed a tall, skinny sophomore wearing an oversized number 30 jersey at the scorer's table checking in.

"Why is Treece putting in the sophomore? Don't we have more experience on the bench? He can't possibly perform in this situation."

"Now checking in for Everett, sophomore Ethan Woy."

You couldn't read the expression on the sophomore's face; it was blank. As he jogged onto the court, the other four senior starters brought the rookie into a huddle to talk about the gameplan. They were down by one with twelve seconds left, and rival Bedford had their star player Josh Marshall on the foul line shooting a one-and-one.

"Marshall with the free throw...he missed! Decker grabs the rebound and pushes the ball up the court! The Warriors have no time outs left. Decker passes it to McCahan at the top of the key, and he dishes it off to Woy..."

The sophomore caught the ball cleanly and looked towards the hoop. A Bedford defender closed out at him and it looked like he would have to force up a bad shot. Suddenly the blank expression on his face turned to one of confidence. He gave a shot fake, which got the defender in the air, and drove towards the hoop. As the seconds counted down to one, he jumped off his left foot and collided with another Bedford defender mid-flight. The defender grabbed his shoulder as the ball was released into the air...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Swindell is in the shotgun. He drops back to pass and avoids an incoming pass rusher. He has a man open down field, and it's Woy! He lets it go..."

I had my guy beat on a fade route but Bradley under-threw me. I came back and went up to bring down the pass but at the same time, a Claysburg defender went to lay a big hit on me. I just got my fingers on the ball when I felt the collison...

"And it's incomplete. Oh no, looks like Woy is down. It might be his collarbone..."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And it's good! Woy wins the game for the Warriors!"

The sophomore fell to the ground right before the ball went through the hoop. As he watched it fall through the net, he clutched his collarbone. However, the only feeling was not of pain, but of goosebumps running through his back as he saw the student section storm the court. As his teammates came up to celebrate and ask him if he was alright, he just smiled and thought...

    "Yeah, the collarbone is fine."

Author's Note: This is my NCAA 2010 CL. I will have at least one update per week until the game comes out. The different colors signal different people talking or their thoughts. I have to reserve some posts first, so don't post yet. Thank you and I hope you enjoy this.

Thanks Jay, sexy avatar. ;) I've had this in the planning stages for a while, just didn't know when it was time to break it out. But after reading BC's, GMS's, and the others on the IGN boards, it made anxious to start mine. My Chance Kennedy CL on Sportsgamer was fun to write last year, but this one should be ten times better. Plus I can use some real life situations since I'm not really making up a new character.

EDIT: Thanks pack, I just saw your comment.

At our school, you don't get moved up to varsity until your sophomore year. The only varsity sports you can play when you're a freshman is soccer and track.

Thanks TS and believe me, this will be so much better than Chance Kennedy. The storylines will be way better and I have a better connection with the main character since it's, well, me. I'm excited to get this rolling; it's gonna be amazing.

                            Facing Your Fears

"And it's good! Woy wins the game for the Warriors!"

I guess you can say that's where the legend began. I'm Ethan Woy, incoming senior at Everett Area High School. Everett is a small town in Pennsylvania near the Maryland border where there more pizza shops than stop lights. There's absolutely nothing to do around here. Anyways, where do I begin? I was a very active kid growing up - always wanted to be outside, running around or playing with a ball - something. At age seven I went out for my first sport, Little League Baseball, and dominated all the kids my age. The next year when I signed up, they decided to put me in the "major league" division, which consisted of only 10-12 year olds. I was only eight at the time. As I progressed through elementary school, I joined the elementary basketball team; my favorite sport now. As some kids my age would have trouble getting shots up near the hoop, I would be making lay-ups with my left (weak) hand. The only sport I didn't go out for in elementary school was football.

Why? Honestly, I was a pussy. I was scared as hell of getting hit. I would dominate flag football in gym class all the time but when they all went to Pop Warner practice, I just sat on the sidelines. I was too worried of getting injured. However, that changed in seventh grade. One of my best friends decided as a joke to sign me up for the team. He told me that it was just a group of kids trying out to be a waterboy for the varsity team. But when I saw bigger, older ninth grade kids in pads and helmets, I knew that I "punk'd," as Ashton Kutcher would call it. There was no turning back though; I had to face my fears.

See around when you get out of elementary school, you start wanting to impress older kids and make new friends. Your first impression makes a mark on people, just like my first varsity basketball game. I didn't want these kids' first impression of me as one of a pansy. So I got a coach to help me put on the pads, and we went to work. They placed me in the Oklahoma drill to start, which for a kid scared of contact was the last drill you wanted to start out in. I nervously stepped to the line where one of the freshman linebackers were lined up against me.

                            "GO!"

I started running right at him, thinking "just take the contact." He lowered his shoulder and stuck me right in my tracks. I fell over to the ground as the other players all started yelling "nice hit" and such. Right away though, I jumped right back up.

                            "Is that all you got?"

I jumped to the head of the line and the freshman ran back to face me again. I could tell I pissed him off with that comment, but he didn't hurt me at all with his hit.

                            "GO!"

He charged right at me and I was running straight at him. Right before we were about to make contact, I dug my right foot into the turf and side-stepped to the left. He completely whiffed and fell on his face as I ran by for a score. As my teammates were hollering and yelling for me, I was met up by the head coach jogging back.

                            "Ethan Woy right?"

                            "Yes?"

"What position would you like to play?"

                            "Umm...wide receiver."

"Alright. Congratulations, you're on the team."

Thanks jay. I thought about writing that I ran him over, but I never ran people over when I played football. I always juked them out or threw a stiff arm.
