You Can't Win Them All

After winning the State championship, our celebration was shortened. We were already into basketball season and despite playing some of the worst teams in our area, we slid to a 3-3 record. Our starting lineup consisted of one normal starter, and only three players that would get normal playing time. The five of us (Brad, Brad, Cory, Clinton, and I) needed to get back into the flow of things quickly and Coach Treece was pretty happy when we showed up for our first practice of the season. It was right before a big game against conference rival Northern Bedford, so us coming back was a blessing for Coach.

"You guys are finally done signing autographs for the town, huh?"

"Miss us Coach?"

"You bet, we've been struggling. Nate's not filling in well at center, but he's young. Nick's giving us a spark and Tyler has shown improvement, but overall it isn't the same. How's the arm Brad?"

"It still hurts, but I'll be good to play."

"That's good then, we need all of you."

"We're here to save your season coach."

"And now, here's your starting lineup for our own Everett Warriors!"

The gym was filled up completely, with fans sitting in the isles even. Everett wanted to see this team make a similar type run to the PIAA double-A State championship in basketball.

"Junior guard, number four, Tyler Bulger!"

"Senior guard, number 14, Clinton Mearkle!"

"Senior guard, number 10, Brad Swindell!"

"Senior forward, number 12, Cory Waltman!"

"And senior forward, number 15, Ethan Woy!"

I won the opening tip and we dominated from the start, even though we were still very rusty.

"Dodson tries to cross over...Woy steals it! He dribbles down the floor and goes up...and hammers it in! A show-stopping dunk by Woy and now NBC calls a timeout."

We ended up beating our rival 83-52. Then we went on a run where we only lost one game the rest of the season, and ended up finishing 25-3 in the regular season. District playoffs were a breeze, as we easily defeated the North Star Cougars in the District 5-AA title game. Then we advanced to the Elite Eight in the State playoffs where we were beaten by five by Terrelle Pryor's alma mater, Jeanette. You can't win them all, I guess.

The season was still very successful. Averaging almost 23 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks a game, I was voted ICC MVP, and was named to the All-State second team. Schools like Robert Morris, Temple, and VCU came calling to see if I would choose basketball over football, but with those kind of offers, I wasn't going to.

February was coming to a close and some of our seniors were just deciding on where to play after this year.

"Brad Swindell is about to announce his college decision."

"After talking it over with my family, friends, and coaches, I decided that I will be playing at the...University of Buffalo next fall."

"Now, Cory Waltman is about to announce his college decision."

"I will become conference rivals with Brad and attend the...University of Temple."

"And finally, Clinton Mearkle is ready to announce his choice."

"I've decided to attend...Kent State University."

"There you go, three of Everett's best all going the MAC route."

"Nice choices guys. Wish you could join me at..."

"Yeah I know, but you'll do great there. Just remember when you have a bye week to come to our games."

"Haha, no doubt. Let's go bowling or something. Melyssa's out with her friends, and I need to see some good-looking chicks tonight."

"Woah, you're planning on cheating!?"

"No, no. It's like I'm on a diet. I can look at the food on the buffet all I want...I just can't taste."

Author's Note: The next update I'll post happens before this in the story...this was more of just a filler update before college.

Good update there woy. I like it. How tall is Ethan? I would think playing center you would need to be atleast 6'6 or 6'7, especially if a team like VCU is recruiting you.
