Putting Bias Aside
"Ethan!"
No response.
"Wake up!"
Still no response.
"You're gonna be late for practice!"
And just when Delone said that, I instantly woke up.
"Wha..oh shit! How much time do we got?"
"Half an hour. Get your ass out of bed."
"Fuck, I'm tired."
"Well I guess one of our linebackers will have to wake you up then. Let's go."
We both walked out the door of our dorm room and into our cars. After a ten minute drive, we made it to our practice facility and wakled into the lockerroom. Some of our teammates were getting dressed as Mike made his way up to me.
"Yo, Coach wants to talk to you Ethan."
"Bout what?"
"Don't know. He's in his office."
I made my way past Mike and knocked on Coach's door.
"You wanted to see me Coach?"
"Yes, take a seat. This shouldn't take long."
I slowly sat down and wondered what Coach wanted to talk to me about.
"From what I've heard, you were a Carolina basketball fan...right?"
"Yes, and I still am Coach."
"Alright, I don't have a problem with that."
"Coach, I have no clue where this is going."
"Is that going to cause any tension with Greg?"
Duh, of course it will. I hate anything and everything Duke, and Paulus has been my 'whipping boy' for the four years he played. But I couldn't tell coach that.
"Nah, we're good."
"Better be. When I announced that he had a chance at the starting job, I wasn't lying. The kid's got talent. If he picks up the new offense better than Andrew, he's going to be under center against Northwestern in a few weeks."
I groaned silently. I'm not thrilled at all to be all 'buddy buddy' with Paulus.
"Alright, I understand Coach."
"Good. Now get ready for practice."
I walked out of Coach's office and started to look for my locker. And of course, who was it beside? Mr. Paulus himself. I made my way over as he was putting on his shoulder pads. I wanted to say if he remembered how to put them on, but instead I said...
"You ready for practice?"
"Yeah. I'm ready to get that starting job."
"Andrew's good man. You're going to have to be on target every pass."
"Hey, I'll worry what I have to do. You just worry about catching my passes."
His attitude was really getting to me, and I couldn't hold back what I said next.
"You want me to catch them like you caught Danny Green's nuts?"
Greg's face got beet red when I said that. Some players around us started to laugh, and I joined in. I couldn't put together what Greg muttered next, but I was sure it was something involving curse words. Hey, I tried to not bag on him, right?
The morning part of practice was killer. Suicides, stadiums, gassers; you name any type of conditioning and chances are we did them. The team got a quick lunch and relaxed for a while, resting our bodies, before going out later in the afternoon for drill work.
"Quarterbacks! Receivers! I will be pairing you up with one another. You will be facing a defensive back in an one-on-one drill. Here's what's on the line. Receivers, if you catch the pass, the defensive back will owe a stadium. Defensive backs, it's basically the opposite. If you break up or intercept a pass, the receiver and the quarterback will owe a stadium. Got it? Good. First up, Paulus and Woy."
Damn, what a surprise. Might as well start running my stadiums now.
"You'll be matched up against Scott."
Kevyn Scott was the team's top returning defensive back. A junior, he was put on numerous pre-season All-Big East teams. He walked up to the line with a blank face, not showing any emotion whatsoever.
"DOWN, SET, HUT!"
Greg took the snap and went into a three-step drop. Kevyn jammed me off the line, throwing me off a little on my slant route. I got into my route and Greg threw it as Kevyn threw his hand up to deflect it. But, he was too slow. The ball made it's way into my hands as I turned upfield.
"That's one Scott!"
I nodded to Greg as to acknowledge his nicely placed pass, but he didn't even respond. Kevyn however started to get a little upset as I could tell while reading his facial expression.
"DOWN, SET, HUT!"
Kevyn jammed me again, but it caused him to stumble a little bit. However, his speed made up the ground as he was step-by-step with me when Greg released the ball. It would have to a perfectly placed lead pass on the fade to get through...and it was. I caught it in stride as Kevyn started to get louder with his cursing.
"Another one Scott! Are you going to let this freshman embrrass you in front of the whole team!?"
I looked around and sure enough, the entire team and coaching staff started to crowd this little section of the field. Kevyn noticed it too and really started to express frustration with both Greg and I. He lined up a few more yards back, so I didn't expect to be jammed this time.
"DOWN, SET, HUT!"
I started my route downfield as Kevyn was reading my eyes. Ten yards downfield, I looked to my right, throwing Kevyn off enough to break into my post route. Once again, surprisingly, Greg placed the ball in the right spot as I caught it in the endzone. Kevyn just threw his helmet down and started running to the stadium stairs.
"You best be running Scott!"
I jogged the ball back to Greg as Andrew and Mike were getting ready to start.
"Damn, you weren't lying."
"Told ya. Just learning the playbook will be the toughest thing for me."
"Yeah, you should be fine. I won't mind catching passes from you every Saturday. Oh, and sorry for the whole Danny Green comment earlier."
"No prob, I hear it a lot. Carolina fan I assume?"
"Yes sir."
"Maybe I'll have to show you how much Cameron is better than the Dean Dome sometime."
I nodded 'yes' and shook his hand - the first sign of putting my bias aside and giving the former enemy a chance...Last edited by Woy; 08-10-2009, 11:00 PM.

UNC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> RMU (where I'm going) >>>>>>>>>>>>>> a dead walrus >>>>>>>>>> Duke.
I'm working on an update now, but I probably won't post it till about 3 EST. I'm going to play out the junior and hopefully senior seasons today, that way I won't have to worry about playing games while in college.
And I'm going to go into my Table of Contents and write little cliff notes for every update, that way if new followers want to jump on board, they don't have to read every single update.
