End of the Line
I heard the officer's powerful voice and quickly wiped the tears from my eyes.
"I said freeze!"
"Sir, I had something in my eye..."
"I don't give a fuck if you did or not. Hands behind your head now."
Confused as of why he was here and not after Rodney, I cooperated and placed my hands behind my head. After their search to see if I had a weapon on me, he surprised me even further with the act of putting me in handcuffs.
"Officer, what did I do?"
"Shut up and get in the car."
Getting more pissed off by the second, I struggled to fight them off before being thrown into the backseat. As I overheard them laughing in the frontseat, I looked out the window to the midnight winter sky. The possibility of ending up in jail tonight was starting to go through my mind, and I was also trying to figure out what exactly I was doing in the back of this cop car. I didn't do anything wrong, did I?
A few more minutes passed and finally we arrived at our destination. I was roughly grabbed out of the car and walked into the prosecution room. From there, the two officers uncuffed me and told me to sit down. I was frightenly curious about what they were going to ask me, but I was relieved to see their serious faces show a smile.
"You thought we were busting you for something, huh?"
"Wait...what?"
"You're not in any trouble Mr. Woy."
"Then why did you guys throw me in the car?"
"To scare ya, haha."
These guys thought they were funny and I laughed along, but I was getting even more pissed.
"Anyways, back to being serious. What happened there tonight? We've gotten basically the same story, but figured you could help us out with the case."
"Oh okay. Well I was standing there on the stage, making my speech. Without any warning, I hear gunshots go off from the top right row. I ducked and braced for pain, and after a while I looked behind me to see multiple bodies with gunshot wounds."
"I see, and how'd you find your little brother shot?"
"I was walking towards one of the spectators that apparently pushed the gunman out of the way, when I was redirected towards Evan. He was sort of hidden on the side of the bleachers. When I saw the wound, I immediately told him to keep quiet and save his energy, and then I brought him to the ER."
"Now we're going to take you to the cell where we captured the alleged shooter. I need you to confirm this."
"Sir, I know exactly who it is."
We walked to the last cell where a man in a depressed state was sitting. His head was down and as he poked it up to see who was stopping by, that sadness turned into an angry expression. His anger was focused on the man he was told to kill and was frustrated to see him still alive.
"So this man has been identifed as Rodney Morris by everyone we've talked to. Can you confirm this?"
I looked at him and just smiled. Not a smile of payback - because the man possibly took my brother's life - but one of accomplishment. I knew he would get what he deserved.
"Yes, yes I can."
"Thank you Ethan. You're free to go."
The officers walked off but I stood there for a little bit longer. We were staring at each other; each wanting for this cell bar to disappear so we could lay a fist into the other's jaw. I took a step to walk away, then looked at him again.
"You got what you deserve."
"You're not safe yet Woy. This wasn't a hit put on by me."
"Shut the fuck up."
"I'm just warning you. I was working for someone."
"I don't care. Rot in hell, motherfucker."
And with that statement, I officially ended my internship with Rodney and got the biggest threat to my life, out of it for good. It would be finally safe to go back to Syracuse and continue my career.
But the only two things on my mind were how Evan was doing and who Rodney was possibly working for...
