Morning Sickness

*BEEP BEEP BEEP*

Opening my eye, I saw a beam of sunlight flash across the room. It was seven in the morning and I had to be at the Carrier Dome in an hour for a team breakfast. I slowly got up, stretched my arms and looked to the side of me to see someone missing. I started to wonder where Melyssa was at until I heard some noise in the bathroom.

Wiping the mess from her mouth she cried out, "I'm in here," as I opened the door. She gathered herself from the sink and stood up to talk to me.

"Morning sickness or the Chinese last night?" I asked jokingly, knowing the answer all along. It was cutting it close to her delivery date and I was anticipating my son or daughter coming into this world any second now.

She cracked a smile and punched me in the arm. "Very funny, I was done with morning sickness a while ago. Are you getting excited?"

"That I have to give up my night life?" I again asked jokingly, and again she cracked a smile. "Nah for real, I can't wait. It's going to be so weird being a father, but at the same time it's going to be fun. Maybe if it's a boy, he'll grow up to be just like me."

She figured she could crack a joke as well and said. "Please, you want him to grow up just like you? I don't think he wants to be a loser."

"Shut up," I said, laughing. "Now...are you done gagging yourself like a model so I can shower?"

She raised her hand and grinned. "You're lucky I love you, otherwise I would have slapped you right there." Then she gave me a hug and took her graceful self out of the bathroom and back to bed.

I quickly showered and made my way out of the apartment just in time for breakfast. As the team was going through the buffet line, Jonny walked up and greeted me with a fist pound.

"What's good son?" Jonny asked as he took a scoop of scrambled eggs and put them on his plate. "You ready to get some payback on Seton Hall?"

I grabbed a few slices of bacon and replied. "No doubt. You know we lost because I didn't start last time, right?"

"Yeah sure," Jonny laughed. "Whatever you say, kid. So yo girl is getting real big I see. When's that baby coming?"

"Hopefully soon," I slightly groaned. "I'm tired of waking up early in the morning to hear her puking in the bathroom, haha."

"Yeah, I feel ya," he agreed. "I'm not ready for that commitment shit yet. That's why I respect you, cause you know how to settle down with a woman."

"That's a load of bullshit," I chuckled. "It's not because I'm carrying this team now?"

"Haha that too," he revealed. "You have been killing it out there."

As we sat down at the table, I felt a vibration in my pocket. When I pulled out my phone, I was shocked to see the message that came across my screen.

"I think my water broke."

Instantly, I dialed her number and waited for her to pick up.

"I guess you got my text," she responded. "Don't..."

"I can be there in five minutes babe," I interrupted her mid-sentence. "Just hang on for a little while longer."

"No Ethan, don't. Troy's taking me," she revealed, relieving my stress. I didn't want to face Coach and tell him that I had to go back to my dorm to take my fiance to the hospital. "I'll be fine, don't worry about me. Just go out and play an amazing game for your future son or daughter."

"I will definitely," I guaranteed. "You need your rest. Just promise me that you'll wait till I get there to have him."

She sarcastically sighed and said. "I promise, now focus on the game. I love you."

It was going to be hard to keep my mind off her while I was on the court.
