Opportunity Lost
With a blank stare at the malicious words printed in front of me, I crumbled up the paper and threw it in my bag. I didn't want to throw it in the trash for the fear of Melyssa finding out about the past; especially about the near-death experience while she was gone. I wouldn't be able to keep it from her forever, but right now just wasn't the time.
"This is absolute bullshit," I groaned. "Is Britt really still upset that I'm not with her?" I said that a little louder which caused Melyssa to look over from the other room. However, she didn't comprehend what I said, smiled, and continued to feed Sean Joseph. I took another sip of water and started to ponder what exactly Coach Boeheim was going to say.
...
As the day grew on, a few people commented to Britt about her article while others just gave her a stare of disbelief. These mixed reactions left her with mixed emotions and continued to confuse her on whether she made the right choice or not.
"I wonder what's going to be the fallout after this," she said aloud as she walked into her empty apartment. She didn't hear any rumors on whether Ethan would be punished for his actions or whether this would just blow over. Hell, she didn't even know if Ethan found out about the article yet. She was expecting an angry text message from him anytime if he did read it. Maybe he just doesn't care anymore.
...
"Well," I gulped as I clenched the door knob of Coach Boeheim's office. "Here we go, I guess."
I slowly closed the door behind me and looked over to see a disappointed coach sitting at his desk. He looked up at me and suggested that I'd sit down. The Daily Orange was open right in front of me, which led me to believe my assumptions were right - this would be about the article.
"You could have told me about your child's birth," he calmly said. "That would have been excusable." Then he stopped for a brief second. "You didn't foul out on purpose, did you?"
"Coach, you know I wouldn't pull anything like that," I replied. "Steve actually came up to me during a timeout and told me that Melyssa was having our child." Seriously, why would I foul out on purpose when the game was still relatively close? It's like Coach lost faith in my commitment to the team.
"Okay I was just making sure," he responded. "Congrats, by the way. But we're not here to talk about your son." He then pointed to my picture and the headline of the article. "Would you like to explain to me what this is all about?"
"Coach, that was back in football season," I pleaded. "I'm not like that at all anymore. I'm not drinking anymore, I don't get depressed after we lose..." However, he put his hand up to quiet my plead and answered with what I expected.
"That doesn't matter Ethan. You drank underage, almost killed yourself and was placed on suicide watch. And I didn't know anything about this!?" Coach was fuming now and I knew whatever I tried to say wouldn't make things much better.
I attempted to convince him that I was fine. "Coach, I'm okay, really. That will never happen again, I promise." Unfortunately, he wasn't buying what I was trying to say and told me to keep quiet again.
"Ethan, I just don't know anymore," he said like he was about to break some bad news to me. "I mean, you hid all these skeletons from everyone so long...who knows what else you've done that we don't know about? I'm sorry to tell you this, but I am going to have to suspend you for the rest of the season. You may come back and play after football next year but for now, it's best you spend time with your new family and worry about your schoolwork. Clean up your image and start fresh next year."
I sat there, speechless. The only reason why I chose Syracuse over other schools was the opportunity to play my favorite sport, basketball. And now Coach was taking that opportunity away? As I walked out, I pulled out my cell phone and went down the line till I found the B section. I furiously typed out what I felt about Britt, but then erased it all and sent a simple message to her.
...
It was in the middle of communications class and Britt was on her laptop trying to pass time. Without warning, she felt a vibration in her pocket and took her phone out. The name was surprising, but the message was not.
