Old Friends Proposing Ridiculous Trade Offers
Indiana Pacers GM Larry Bird and Minnesota Timberwolves GM Kevin Mchale were two important pieces to the Celtics teams that dominated the NBA in the early to mid 80's.
Sources close to the Pacers have told us that Mchale tried to pull a quick one on bird, offering Ryan Gomes and Craig Smith in a possible trade for Brandon Rush.
The offer was quickly shot down by Bird. "Kevin's an old buddy of mine, definitely," explained Bird. "But he knew I wasn't going to go for that. The cap space we could've gained with those Ryan and Craig coming was something to consider, but Brandon is coming along far too well to let him go."
Perhaps Mchale thought his relationship with Bird would've allowed him leverage in this trade. Similar to the heist Suns GM Steve Kerr pulled off against former teamate and current Bobcats GM, Michael Jordan last year; where he was able to acquire Jason Richardson for Boris Diaw and Raja Bell. (Kerr went on to win GM of the year and the Suns won the championship.)
