Signing Day
(left) TE Joe Allen (center) QB Kyle Nicholson (right) CB Mike Cook
Corvallis, OR - The Beavers' incoming class was ranked #22 according to Rivals. The top prospect was TE Joe Allen from Spring Valley, California. Allen is rated as the top TE prospect of this year's class. His ability to catch the ball in traffic over the middle will help move the chains in the future. But do not expect him to see the field soon as he will certainly red shirt with senior Brady Camp and junior Joe Halahuni ahead on the depth chart. In addition to Allen, the Beavers also landed the #7 TE David Jacobs from Los Angeles. So even though Howard Croom and John Reese will be gone, this will continue to be a strong position at OSU.
An area of emphasis seemed to be at the CB position as Oregon State added two 4-star prospects in Mike Cook from Huntington Beach, California and Eugene Burnette from Meridian, Idaho. Cook is raw but has a lot of potential. He is very fast, athletic, has a good vertical, and excels in man coverage. Burnette is also great in man coverage but probably does not have the athletic potential of Cook. The Beavers' coaching staff is also excited about a local Oregon prospect CB Josh Hammond from Cedar Mill. Hammond has surprised defensive coordinator Mark Banker with his pressing and coverage skills.
Another area of emphasis was on the offensive line. Even though this year's offensive line should be great, the Beavers want to keep it that way for the future. Four-star G Dallas White from Milwaukie, Oregon will have time to get up to speed as he will almost certainly be red shirted. For a pass blocking guard, White also has impressed with his run blocking skills. Joining White in this year's class is 3-star G Robert Andrews from Lakeside, California and two junior college transfers; G Shane Todd from Santee, California; and C Corey Freeman from Sultan, Washington. None of these big guys will probably play but it does give Oregon State depth on the offensive line if they need it.
Another local prospect that the Beavers like is three-star OLB Sean Hunter from Canby, Oregon who has shown to be a tough run stopper who gets off of blocks to make plays. Oregon State also added another QB to the mix in three-star Kyle Nicholson from Redwood City, California who will primarily be a pocket QB. Nicholson has a pretty good arm and is tough to bring down in the pocket as he is able to elude pass rushers. With Justin Engstrom, Peter Lalich, and Ryan Katz ahead of him on the depth chart, Nicholson will almost certainly be red shirted. However, that position will be up for competition according to Mike Riley.

2010
#13 Oregon State Preview
When we last left the Beavers, they had just finished off South Florida in the Sun Bowl to finish the season in the top ten. Last year was a season of many accomplishments for Oregon State. Most importantly, the Beavers finally got a win at the Coliseum against USC. But also the Beavs finally were able to get a win at Tempe against Arizona State to end that decades' long curse. In addition, Oregon State was finally able to beat a non-conference team on the road even if it was against UNLV. Then you add a Civil War win to give Oregon State back-to-back wins at Autzen Stadium and a defensive dismantling of USF in the Sun Bowl to give the Beavs back-to-back Sun Bowl victories. Beaver Nation will be looking for bigger things this year as Corvallis is already talking about the Rose Bowl.
In order to get there it will all start up front on offense and Oregon State brings back four starters on the offensive line. This will be a much improved group from last year's inexperienced line. Junior LT Mike Remmers will anchor this line. But he should not be the only guy to shine as seniors, G Burke Ellis, RT Timi Oshinowo, and C Alex Linnenkohl all look to have improved under the tutelage of one of the best assistant coaches in the nation, Mike Cavanaugh.
If this offense is to have any success though it will all come down to redshirt sophomore QB Ryan Katz who has yet to take a single snap. Going into the spring, Justin Engstrom looked to be the favorite to win the job, but Katz had a fantastic offseason to leap ahead of Engstrom and the transfer from Virginia, fifth-year senior Peter Lalich. Katz has a lively arm and better mobility than meets the eye. But he has a lot to learn. Just how fast he can develop will probably determine the season for Oregon State.
QB Ryan Katz
With an inexperienced QB, the Beavers will turn to their sensational tailback, Jacquizz Rodgers who has come back even quicker and more agile than he was previously. Mike Riley is expecting a huge year for Quizz as long as he can stay healthy. Especially with a strong offensive line, Quizz should be more dynamic than he was last year and will help Katz in the passing game. Also offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf has professed that he would like to get Quizz more involved in the passing game as he only had 13 receptions last year. Quizz has looked so good this fall that it would not surprise anybody in Corvallis if he becomes a Heisman contender by season's end.
HB Jacquizz Rodgers
Katz may be inexperienced but he will be helped out by three senior receivers. Including older brother of Jacquizz, senior WR James Rodgers. Mike Riley is really excited about the development of James and expects a really big season for the diminutive playmaker. "James has just really picked up his route running," said Riley. "He's just running tight, crisp routes and making great catches down the field. I think Ryan and James have really built up a great rapport with each other." In addition to James, Darrell Catchings is also back and we will help take coverage off of James. As Catchings is also a threat. But a guy that will probably surprise Beaver fans this season is senior Reggie Dunn who has been known more for his kick returning ability. Dunn will be in the slot and has exceptional speed. In this offense, Dunn should be really explosive.
WR James Rodgers
The Beavers do lose their starting TEs from last year, Howard Croom and John Reese. But senior Brady Camp and junior Joe Halahuni look ready to step in. Camp is more of a blocker and will likely be a good fit since this likely to be more of a run team. Halahuni is the better receiver but look for Dunn and Jacquizz Rodgers to get more receptions to offset the loss of Croom which might be more significant than expected.
Code:Offense QB Ryan Katz SO(RS) 85 QB Peter Lalich SR(RS) 84 HB Jacquizz Rodgers JR 98 FB David Harris FR 54 WR James Rodgers SR 97 WR Darrell Catchings SR 90 WR Reggie Dunn SR 88 TE Brady Camp SR(RS) 89 TE Joe Halahuni JR(RS) 86 OT Mike Remmers JR 93 OT Timi Oshinowo SR(RS) 90 OG Ryan Pohl SR 85 OG Burke Ellis JR(RS) 91 C Alex Linnenkohl SR(RS) 90
On the defensive side, the season looks really bright except for one possible weakness in the secondary. The defensive line will be solid. Oregon State was one of the top rushing defenses in the nation last year and that trend will likely continue. "We make it a priority to force teams to be one-dimensional," said defensive coordinator Mark Banker. Senior DT Stephen Paea is back for his final year who had eight sacks last season. Paea is a force in the trenches the just creates havoc in the backfield for opposing offenses. Paea is quickly shooting up NFL scouts' lists and will be joined by underrated senior DT Mitchell Hunt. The Beavers should also be strong on end with junior DE Kevin Frahm who also had eight sacks.
DT Stephen Paea
The defensive line is clearly the strength of this defense but the linebackers should not be overlooked. Though Oregon State will be without their outstanding OLB Keaton Kristick, junior MLB David Pa'aluhi led the team with 98 tackles last year and will look to lead this group. Joining him on the outside is senior OLB Keith Pankey played great last year especially in the Civil War. This will likely be one of the best front sevens in the Pac-10.
OLB Keith Pankey
As good as Oregon State should be up front, the secondary might decide this defense's fate this season. Mike Riley was able to convince FS Suaesi Tuimaunei to stay for his senior season. So Oregon State has a preseason All-American at safety. He will be joined by All-Pac-10 junior SS Lance Mitchell. But at corner, Oregon State will be starting senior James Dockery and junior Brandon Hardin. Both have limited experience and will be the biggest question facing this defense. If those corners can get up to speed, look out.

Game of the Week
#13 Oregon State (0-0) @ #20 Boise State (0-0)
Chris: It's that time again. College Football is finally here! *crowd cheers* We are here in Boise for a big matchup out west. The Broncos are coming off of a memorable Sugar Bowl victory over Cincinnati but will be without their head coach Chris Peterson who is now getting ready for his first season with Florida State. Offensive Bryan Harsin will start his first game today as the head coach for Boise State and he will look to continue the Broncos' amazing 55-game winning streak at home here on the smurf turf. *crowd cheers* Facing them will be a tough Oregon State team who finished last year strong behind some great defensive efforts and the explosiveness of the Rodgers' brothers. So we'll get to our picks for this game and preview some other games around the nation. But right now let's look at the preseason rankings and some Heisman favorites including Boise State's own Kellen Moore... *crowd cheers as the camer focuses on a "Kellen Moore for Heisman" sign*
Code:Preseason Rankings 1 Florida 2 Notre Dame (14-game winning streak) 3 Penn State 4 USC 5 Texas 6 Oklahoma 7 Ole Miss 8 Cal 9 Oregon 10 Ohio State 13 Oregon State Heisman Watch QB Kellen Moore (Boise State) - 4035 yds, 39 td, 9 int WR Avery Holley (Florida Atlantic) - 105 rec, 1298 yds, 22 td WR David Gilreath (Wisconsin) - 70 rec, 1112 yds, 15 td HB Jeffrey Demps (Florida) - 933 yds, 14 td, 551 rec yds, rec td QB Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech) - 3061 yds, 23 td, 12 int
Chris: Okay. It looks like the headgear is here. Time for your picks on this one here.
Kirk: I know that Boise State has a high flying offense led by Kellen Moore but they will be playing a tough Oregon State defense. The points will not come so easy today. The Beavers have a huge advantage in the trenches. DT Stephen Paea and DE Kevin Frahm are going to be giving Boise State pressure all game long. And OSU will give the Broncos a heavy dose of the Rodgers' brothers. The only thing that gives me pause if I'm a Beaver fan is starting a green QB in Ryan Katz on the road in this hostile environment. But the Beavs snap that 55-game home winning streak here in Boise. *crowd boos*
Lee: Kirk. Not so fast! First one of the season sweetheart! *crowd cheers* Oregon State is strong up front defensively but has inexperience at corner. Kellen Moore is going to have a field day against that OSU secondary. And the Beavers are starting redshirt sophomore Ryan Katz in his first game here on the smurf turf. Ehhh...forget about it! *Lee puts on the Buster Bronco headgear as the crowd goes wild* Go Broncos!

#13 Oregon State (0-0) @ #20 Boise State (0-0)
Boise, ID - Last year it was Oregon that failed to win at Bronco Stadium in the season opener. This year it would be Oregon State that would test their fate against Boise State at Bronco Stadium where the Broncos have a 55-game home winning streak. The Beavers were greeted by a hostile crowd and a warm 82 degree evening to open the 2010 season on the smurf turf. Bryan Harsin would debut as Boise State's head coach after the departure of Chris Peterson to Florida State.
Boise State QB Kellen Moore looked like a Heisman contender to start the game as he was throwing darts all over the field to lead the Broncos into OSU territory. But the drive would stall when the Broncos attempted to get HB Jeremy Avery going in the run game. Boise State would attempt a 51-yard field goal but a fairly strong crosswind caused the ball to sail wide right. Oregon State took over and tried to get HB Jacquizz Rodgers going early on. Quizz was able to pick up a 1st down but third year sophomre QB Ryan Katz was errant on his first couple passing opportunities to bring the possession to an end with a punt. However, freshman punter Brian Jenkins was able to pin BSU at their own 4-yard line.
But the Broncos were able to quickly get out of the bad field position as Moore thre clutch pass after clutch pass to get into OSU territory. However, when HB Jeremy Avery was met with a swarming OSU defense and was gangtackled, the ball came loose in the pile. OSU OLB Keith Pankey came up with the fumble recovery. Just as the Beavs' offense was getting ready to take the field. The whistle blew and it was announced that the play was under review. "After further review, the play has been reversed," announced the referee. "The runner's knee was down."
BSU HB Jeremy Avery's fumble is overturned.
Despite the reversal, Boise State was still stopped to set up a 47-yard field goal attempt which again sailed wide right. BSU WR Austin Pettis was taken off the field on an earlier play and it was learned at the break by Erin Andrews that the receiver had an ACL sparin and would be out two weeks. Oregon State could not take advantage of the decent field position again as they would go three-and-out. Katz seemed to be feeling the pressure of his first start.
But Boise State was not looking that much better offensively to open the 2nd quarter as they too would be held to a three-and-out. On the ensuing possession, Katz threw a pass to WR Reggie Dunn where he was taken down just short of the sticks to force another OSU three-and-out. Boise State would get a single first down but would have their possession stall as the game saw another punt. Because of the offensive ineptness or the outstanding defense, Bronco Stadium had quieted down and was hardly a factor. Katz was suddenly able to connect with WR Darrell Catchings for back-to-back first downs. But inside BSU territory, Katz was unable to connect WR James Rodgers to keep the drive alive. Thus setting up a 43-yard field goal attempt for Justin Kahut. But he too missed wide right.
So Boise State took over still with no score in the game. Moore threw a strike to WR Kirby Moore, but the ball bounced off his hands and into the hands of OSU CB Brandon Hardin for an interception.
OSU CB Brandon Hardin makes the pick off of BSU WR Kirby Moore's drop.
With the turnover, OSU was now in business. But Katz would overthrow WR Darrell Catchings for what would have been an easy touchdown. However, the sophomore was able to get the Beavers into position to kick a 23-yard field goal to end the "thrilling" first half with OSU on top 3-0.
Not too many of the pundits could have predicted the pitcher's duel that these teams were involved in with all of the offensive talent on the field. The offensive struggles would only continue for Oregon State to start the 3rd quarter. Katz would connect with WR Casey Kjos for a 1st down, but the Beavs would later be forced to punt. Finally, QB Kellen Moore got just enough time to throw deep over the top to WR Titus Young who got behind the coverage. Young was able to catch the high arching pass over his shoulder in stride as Bronco Stadium roared to life, and raced into the end zone for a 74-yard to put the Broncos ahead 7-3.
BSU WR Titus Young with a 74-yard TD reception.
However, when the excitement died down, it was noticed that Moore was on the ground with trainers surrounded. On the replay you could see Moore getting rid of the ball just in time before OSU OLB Keith Pankey laid the lumber. Moore left under his own power but Erin Andrews would later report that he had back spasms and he would not return. Then on the ensuing kickoff, OSU Jacquizz Rodgers went down hard on the return. He too was being looked at by trainers on the sideline. The busy sideline reporter, E.A. would report that Quizz had a sprained elbow and his return was doubtful.
So the Beavers would rely on HB Ryan McCants to carry the load. And McCants immediately went to work gaining a couple of first downs with some bruising carries. Then Katz was able to fake the handoff and pass over the middle to WR Darrell Catchings on a short crossing route. Catchings would take off and was finally taken out of bounds at the BSU 6-yard line for a 44 yard gain.
OSU WR Darrell Catchings with a 44 yard gain.
Two plays later, McCants was in on a one-yard TD scamper to regain the lead for OSU. 10-7.
OSU HB Ryan McCants in with a one-yard TD scamper.
Boise State would have fifth year senior QB Mike Coughlin take over for the injured Kellen Moore. Coughlin's first series was not too bad as he was able to get Boise State into OSU territory. BSU head coach Bryan Harsin would be forced to make his first difficult decision as the leader of the Broncos when he faced a 4th-and-one at the OSU 30-yard line. Out came the punt team as Bronco Stadium booed the decision. Witht their kicker already with two missed FGs and the way OSU had been stopping the run, Harsin decided to play for field position but the boos only got louder when the ball landed in the end zone for a touchback. But OSU would go three-and-out, and would have to punt from deep inside their own territory.
As the 4th quarter got underway, the Broncos were driving into OSU territory but the drive would again stall, setting up a 40-yard FG which went through the uprights. Bronco Stadium applauded as the game was now tied 10-10. The Beavers countered with their most impressive possession of the game, a long methodical drive. McCants was running the ball right up the gut and tiring out the BSU defense. And Katz was able to keep the drive alive on 3rd down with some clutch passing. With 4:23 left to, inside the red zone, Katz with very little time threw a laser to McCants just short of the goal line where he was able to bull through three defenders for a 14-yard TD to put OSU in front 17-10. It was Katz' first career TD pass.
OSU HB Ryan McCants bulls through for a 14-yard TD reception.
Boise State quickly countered back when Coughlin connected on a deep pass to sophomre WR Chris Potter for a gain of 43 yards that put the Broncos at the OSU 5-yard line. OSU was putting together a tremendous goal line stand. It would all come down to a 4th-and-goal play at the 3-yard line. Coughlin dropped back to pass and threw a strike low to HB Jeremy Avery who made an amazing diving catch, going low for the ball just across the goal line to tie the game 17-17 on the 3-yard TD reception.
BSU HB Jeremy Avery makes a clutch catch in the end zone to tie the game.
It was now Oregon State ball with just over two minutes left in regulation. Now the crowd came to life and was a factor again. McCants powered up the middle to pick up a first down. But Katz was unable to connect on a single pass as the Beavers had to punt with 1:30 remaining. Boise State would take over at their own 15-yard line. The OSU defense held as Coughlin was also unable to complete a pass on 3rd down, but when Boise State was forced to punt, the ball was pinned at the OSU 5-yard line.
Ryan Katz and the Beavers took over with :47 left to go and all of their timeouts remaining. Would Mike Riley be aggressive and try to win the game here or settle for overtime. When HB Ryan McCants got the handoff, it was apparent that Riley might have been settling for OT. But when McCants broke an 11-yard run for a 1st down, the Beavers quickly called a timeout. Katz dropped back to pass and hit TE Brady Camp over the middle for a big 1st down, and suddenly OSU was at midfield. The Beavers went to their no huddle offense. Katz dropped back to pass with only :16 left to go in the game. Katz was given enough time, and stepped up in the pocket, gunning the ball deep over the middle of the field to WR James Rodgers. The diminutive playmaker leaped up and caught the ball over his shoulders in between two BSU defensive backs and was sandwhiched between the two. But Rodgers hung onto the ball for a huge 32-yard gain at the BSU 25-yard line as Bronco Stadium sighed in unison.
OSU QB Ryan Katz guns the ball deep over the middle to WR James Rodgers who holds onto the ball for a 32-yard gain.
Katz and the rest of the offense sprinted down the field in excitement. The clock was briefly stopped because of the 1st down. Mike Riley signaled to his young QB to calm down and let the time tick down to :02 before calling timeout. Out came kicker Justin Kahut for a possible game-winning field goal. Just as the Beavs were ready, the whistle blew. "Timeout Boise State." Harin's strategy was now to ice the kicker. After the Broncos used up their full three timeouts, OSU was finally allowed to attempt the 42-yard field goal. The snap was good, the hold was good, and Kahut booted the ball. Kahut instantly leaped in the air after the ball was in the air as he knew it was good from the moment he kicked it. The ball crossed through the uprights and the Beavers celebrated a major road victory to open the season.
