Game 2, Year 2: Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals
38 -- 1-1
09 -- 1-1
Ravens All-Pro FS Ed Reed scores on a 68-yard fumble return for a touchdown to make the score 31-0 in the third quarter. Reed recovered Bengals QB Carson Palmer's fumble following a 15-yard run and finished the game with 8 tackles and an interception to go along with this big play.
The Cincinnati Bengals were blown away by the Baltimore Ravens 38-9 Sunday at home. Bengals QB Carson Palmer, fresh off one of the best performances of his career, struggled versus the ferocious Ravens defense going just 33 of 53 for 235 yards and throwing four interceptions. The Bengals turned the ball over a whopping 7 times during the contest.
Baltimore FS Ed Reed's 68-yard fumble return for a touchdown following Palmer coughing the ball up in Ravens' territory made the score 31-0 in the third quarter and ended all hopes of a Bengals comeback.
"They made us one-dimensional early when they took the big lead and when you become one-dimensional against a defense like that, you're in trouble," said Palmer.
The news got worse for Cincinnati when the team learned that their leading receiver, Shaun McDonald, suffered a high grade concussion in which doctors have already concluded will cause him to miss several months of action and effectively end his 2010 season. He was injured in the fourth quarter by Baltimore MLB Ray Lewis when he received a vicious hit while going over the middle to catch a pass. McDonald laid motionless on the turf for several seconds before being carted off.
McDonald was off to a hot start playing again in Mike Martz's offense, catching 10 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens, one week after gaining over 100 receiving yards in the team's season opening win versus New Orleans. McDonald will likely be replaced in the lineup by WR Mike Furrey and the team will need to sign another receiver to take his place on the active roster.
"This was a tough deal for him because he was off to such a fast start," said Bengals head coach Mike Martz.
"We have some options of replacing him but there is no replacing the type of speed Shaun brought to this offense."
The team also lost rookie WR Jacoby Ford with an abdominal injury early in the game that is expected to keep him out of one week of action.
Cincinnati (1-1) will host Tampa Bay (0-2) next week at home.
