2nd UNIT IMPROVING DRAMATICALLY
The addition of Corey Brewer to the 2009/10 Los Angeles Clippers is one of the main reasons why the Clippers 2nd unit is now stronger than ever.
Brewer, averaging just under 10 points per game has adapted to a 6th man role that the Clippers have given him. His energy and hustle rubs off onto his team mates and has already been an X factor in the lineup.
Brewer has come off the bench as a defensive stopper and so far has stopped players like Vince Carter, Ben Gordon and Caron Butler when needed too. This is just the start of what Corey will have to deal with. When Clippers face the Lakers and the Cavaliers for example, if things get tough Brewer will always be the guy to do his best to slow down LeBron ,Kobe, and these stars of the game.
Another part of his game that Clippers didn’t actually go after him for is his offence and ability to finish at the rim. Brewer has more than once finished as Clippers top 2 scorers and has added an extra dimension to the Clippers this season.
Brewer isn’t the only reason why the Clippers 2nd unit is getting noticed though, players like Rasual Butler, Craig Smith, and Sebastian Telfair that are consistently doing all they can with the minutes they get is another big factor, aswell as getting extended, well deserved minutes when they play well.
Butler has had a few off games but him and Corey Brewer both of roles of 6th men and get minutes like a 6th man would. These two get minutes as if there backups to Eric Gordon and Al Thornton, so there being played as a 4 man rotation in two positions depending on who’s playing well. This strategy has proved to work well.
Craig Smith is the latest one to put in a big effort, coming off a 20 point night against the Wizards. Smith has had small injury dramas but when he is 100% healthy will compete in the paint against anyone. Smith’s scoring mentality and the way he plays the game has earn’t him the nickname ‘Rhino’, which is basically because he wont ever be the player to pull out of a head to head battle.
Let’s not forget un-noticed players like Louis Amundson, Dorel Wright and Kareem Rush. Players that get little minutes but do there part when they do. Louis Amundson is probably the highest minute receiver from this group purely because of his ability to defend and do it well. Its efforts like his of guarding well known players like David West and Rashard Lewis in the post that has made this Clippers unit more versatile than ever.
