Vermont remains undefeated after topsy-turvy game against Cincinnati, loses Thompson

Burlington, VT - It was a tale of two halves as the Catamounts took on the Bearcats today at
Centennial Field. The two teams combined for 20 points in a defensive first half and then 51
              points in the second.

Cincinnati was able to bottle up Heisman favorite Matt Thompson for the first half containing
him to under 40 yards in the first half and just one red zone score, but Thompson exploded in
the second with two 60+ yard TD runs and then some finishing the game with 208 yards on 28
              carries and three touchdowns.

Thompson was seen hurting on the sidelines after his final touchdown run in the fourth though,
and it was reported he was experiencing back spasms.

He is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a week 10 return against West Virginia being questionable.
Redshirt junior Nic Johnson will carry the load in his absence.

The Catamount defensed lapsed for the second straight week, with Cincinnati QB tearing them up
for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Vermont did get two picks to make up for the two that UVM
              quarterback Terrance Oliver threw.

Cincinnati opened the scoring after stalling at Vermont's nine-yard line and kicking the 26-yard
              field goal.

Vermont took the lead back after trading picks with Cincinnati and getting the ball at their 25.
Four plays later Thompson rushed it in from 13-yards to take a 7-3 lead.

The Cats tacked on three more late in the second with Eli Thomas knocking the 41-yarder through
              to make it 10-3.

But with a minute and a half left in the half, the Bearcats marched down the field to UVM's one where
Lawrence Ferguson punched it in with 30 seconds left to tie the game at 10 before halftime.

The offenses started to break the game open midway through the third with Holmes hitting tight end
Matt Branch for a 12-yard score to take a 17-10 lead.

Vermont responded with a good drive of their own capped with Oliver hitting Xavier White for a nice
15-yard touchdown reception to retie it.

After a Cincinnati punt, Thompson took the lead on one play with a 60-yard touchdown run that made
it 24-17 in favor of Vermont at the end of the third quarter.

Cincinnati then marched down the field on UVM with an 11-play, 74-yard drive, gaining five first downs
along the way before Corey Carter ran it in from three out to tie it back at 24.

On the ensuing kickoff, Thompson caught the ball at his eight and hit the huge hole made by his blocker
(namely Lee Higgins) and ran 92 yards to score.

Holmes second interception of the day, this one to Keith Stone at Cincinnati's 35 seemed like it put the
game away for Vermont as they made it to their three-yard line. But Vermont couldn't get in the end-
zone and kicked the 20-yard field goal to go up 10.

Cincinnati kept it interesting scoring under a minute later with Holmes finding Little in the flat before he
ran 17-yards to cut the lead back to three.

Vermont had the ball back with two minutes left, only needing a couple first downs to seal it. They got the
first down they needed on a third down Thompson rush.

Then on the next play Thompson broke another long run, this one 61-yards to go back up 10, effectively
sealing it. It was on this play though that may have triggered Thompson's injury.
