Vermont Catamounts kick field goal as time expires to win 2020 BCS National Championship

Glendale, AZ - In their 11th season of FBS play, Vermont has clawed to the top. Tied at 24 with
two seconds left, Eli Thomas knocked a 31-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired
to crown the Catamounts as National Champions.

Vermont took at 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, but a Joseph Gipson three-yard run with
2:20 left in the game would tie the score at 24.

UVM got two key third down conversions before Terrance Oliver hit Tyrone Newsome on a 26-yard
connenection over the middle to bring Vermont to VT's 19. A five-yard Matt Thompson run got
them to the VT 14, then Vermont let the clock wind down to two before calling a timeout. You
                      already know the rest.

Matt Thompson, the now two-time Heisman winner, three-time Walker award winner, now Maxwell
winner and returner of the year, can now add the most important trophy of all to his resume, a
national title, before heading to the NFL.

Thompson had TD runs of 12 and 53 in the first quarter, while Heisman runner-up VT runningback
Heath Peoples had a TD reception of 38 that made the score 14-7 after one.

Tech added a 28-yard field goal midway through the second after making it down to UVM's 11 before
being stalled, cutting the Vermont lead to four.

Keith Stone recorded his third interception of the game at the start of the second half (he'd had one
to start the game, and one late in the second quarter), giving Vermont great field position at VT's 40,
but the Cats could only muster a couple first downs before setting for a 39-yard field goal from Thomas
that extended their lead to seven.

A big 36-yard Thomas Bailey reception brought the Hokies to UVM's three where on 3rd & goal,
Anthony Thompson rushed it in to tie the game at 17 with a little over three minutes left in the third.

After considering going for a 4th & 12 at VT's 40, Vermont decided to punt the ball instead. Peoples had
a good return to their own 40, but just two plays later Gipson threw his fourth pick of the game, this one
not Lee Higgins for a change and Vermont had the ball at VT's 46 with 49 seconds left in the third quarter.

Vermont converted a 4th & three play at VT's 39 on a pass to Thompson in the flat. Four plays later and
Oliver hits Xavier White from 23 yards in the corner of the endzone to take a 24 to 17 lead.

Virginia Tech then marched down the field 65 yards on 14 plays before Gipson ran in the tying touchdown.
                      The rest is history.
