      Bruins Sign McKee

Boston (AP) - The Bruins have announced today that they have signed veteran defenseman Jay McKee. As per team policy, financial details remain undisclosed.

McKee, 33, spent the 2009-2010 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he blocked 137 shots in 62 games. The veteran is well known for his shot blocking ability. The Bruins have brought him in hopes of making sure all three defensive pairings are solid.

Concerns among the fans are that McKee disappeared in the final half of the season last year with injuries, and was so unproductive toward the end of the year that he could barely skate, let alone contribute, and only saw action in 5 of the Penguins playoff games. The B's, however, are confident that he can remain healthy. Worst case scenario, Hunwick fills in, or Bartkowski gets called bacup. Low risk/High reward.

McKee will wear #74, and is expected to play Tuesday against the Sabres.

Tuukka Rask is slated to be between the pipes despite his recent poor performances. Julien continues to show faith in his #1 man, but he has to be feeling the heat of Tim Thomas' strong play.

          Horton Nearing Return

Boston (AP) - Bruins forward Nathan Horton has begun full activity and has joined the team in practice. He is expected to be in the lineup in one week on November 10th in Pittsburgh. Where exactly he will be lining up remains an unknown right now, but all signs are pointing to him being placed on the Bergeron line with Mark Recchi, while Caron will slide down to the Seguin line, and either Paille or Marchand will drop from the Seguin line down to the checking line.

The Bruins are in action on Friday for their 3rd matchup of the season with the 6-6-0 Washington Capitals. Tim Thomas gets the start on the front of end this back-to-back, leaving Rask to face the Blues on Saturday at home.

Bruins Suffer Worst Defeat Since 07-08

Washington (AP) - Barely worth the post this is being typed on, the Bruins suffered their worst defeat since 2007-2008, where ironically enough they also lost 10-2 to the Caps with Tim Thomas in net. If it felt like deja vu, it's probably because it was.

Ovechkin led the way for the Caps with a 4 goal night. Fehr, Semin, and Fleischmann added 2 each. 3 different Caps had 3 assists each. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas allowed 9 of the goals on 30 shots, while Rask gave up 1 on 3. Wheeler and Bergeron scored goals after the Bruins went down 2-0 to tie it at 2-2 halfway through the first, but that was as close the B's would ever get.

The Capitals took advantage of a 5 minute power play given to them after Jay McKee was given a game misconduct penalty for boarding, scoring two goals during the 5 minute penalty. The Bruins felt the effects of being a man short on the defensive end as the Capitals really took it to what you could tell was a very tired defense with both Chara and Stuart working double duty to cover for the absence of McKee. Chara logged 29 minutes, while Stuart added 26:41 of his own.

The Bruins fall to 6-3-1 on the season with the loss. They return to action at the TD Garden tomorrow night against the St. Louis Blues. Expect Rask to get the call in that one.

                Injury Report

Boston (AP) - The Bruins are finally getting closer to their return to full strength as they announced return dates today for two key players in Marc Savard and Marco Sturm.

First order of business, however, is announcing that Nathan Horton will make his return to the lineup on Wednesday against Pittsburgh. He is expected to play on the right wing of the Krejci line, joining Blake Wheeler. Michael Ryder has been moved to the Seguin line on the right wing, joining Paille. Marchand is nursing a day to day injury and will be out of the lineup against Pittsburgh, but upon his return will join the energy line centered by Campbell, sending Reich to the bench, or the AHL.

Marco Sturm has been skating for 2 weeks now working to get back into game shape following his offseason ACL/MCL surgeries. He has been cleared to join the team in full practice, and is set to return on November 15th against the New Jersey Devils. It remains to be seen who is moved to Providence to open up a spot for him, but the likeliest of candidates at this point is Jordan Caron.

Marc Savard, who has spent much of the early season working out and staying in shape, has returned to full skating activities, but remains out of practice for at least another week. If all goes well this week, he could be cleared for return to practice on November 14th, which would likely mark a return date of November 22nd for the centerman. The Bruins have continued to shop him, however, in search of a puck moving defenseman, and are reportedly close to a deal.

                  Done Deal

Boston (AP) - The Bruins have announced a 5 player trade today which saw playmaking centerman Marc Savard sent to one of two teams he was willing to waive his no trade clause for, the Ottawa Senators. Joining Savard in Ottawa will be teammate Mark Stuart, and defenseman Yuri Alexandrov from Providence. In return, the Bruins have received veteran two way defenseman Filip Kuba, and 20-year-old second year defenseman, Erik Karlsson.

Kuba, 33, is in his 11th season in the NHL, having played previously for Florida, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Ottawa. He is known for his terrific size and mobility, as well as decent offensive instincts and a sound defensive approach, though he has had issues throughout his career with consistency, and doesn't really use his size to his advantage.

Karlsson, 20, is in his 2nd season in the NHL. Last year as a rookie he contributed 5 goals and 21 assists in 60 games. Karlsson is a smooth skater with exceptional hockey sense and puck moving ability and projects to be a quality offensive defenseman. The biggest knock on him always will be his size, as he is a bit undersized for the NHL level, at 5'11" 175 pounds, and it really limits what he can do in defensive zone coverage.

Stuart, 26, was in the final year of his contract with the Bruins, and it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring him back, and as the Sens weren't willing to part with two defensemen without getting something back in return, Stuart seemed an ideal fit. The B's tried to get them to take Hunwick, but they were not interested. Stuart flourishes in his role as a stay at home defenseman, and is a vocal leader on the ice, and will certainly be missed by Bruins fans.

The Bruins offensive lines aren't impacted by this trade, but there will be some shuffling with the defensive pairings. Kuba will pair with his teammate Karlsson, and Ference will pair up with Johnny Boychuk. Kuba and Karlsson are both expected to work on the Bruins #2 power play unit as well.

                          Sturm to Make Season Debut

Boston (AP) - Marco Sturm is set to make his 2010-2011 season debut following offseason knee surgery.

The 32 year old winger brings excellent speed and puck handling skills that the Bruins have been sorely lacking in their top 6 forwards early on in the season. While he is pretty inconsistent offensively, he is a contributor in all three zones and an effective player on the power play.

Sturm is expected to join the Bergeron line, replacing Jordan Caron, who was sent down to Providence upon Sturm's activation.

The Bruins and Sturm return to action on Monday at the TD Garden against the New Jersey Devils. Tim Thomas will be in net, as Rask continues to struggle.

                              Bruins Add Another Casualty

Boston (AP) - Mark Recchi is set to miss the next 2-3 weeks with bruised ribs sustained on yet another friendly fire incident. Once again, Chara was the one to do the damage, drilling Recchi in the side on a point shot. Apparently the Bruins forwards didn't get the memo that they're supposed to deflect the shots with their sticks and not their bodies.

In any case, expect Caron to get called back up to take Recchi's spot until his return.

The Bruins, winners of two straight, return to action on Wednesday in New York to face the 11-6-1 Rangers, followed by a return home on Thursday to take on the 8-5-2 Panthers. Tim Thomas will be in net for at least the Rangers game as Julien has decided to ride the hot hand for the time being.
