Go Beavs: An Oregon State Dynasty

    Oregon State
    Beavers

    All-American

Sliders will be a work in progress

    8 minute quarters

Here's a fun fact on the Oregon State Beavers. They have won 39 games in the past five years, and only USC and Cal have won more in that time period among Pac-10 teams. The Oregon State Beavers under head coach Mike Riley are coming off a surprisingly successful year finishing third in the Pac-10 and an Emerald Bowl victory over Maryland. In addition, the Beavers have won the Civil War over the Oregon Ducks two years in a row now. This despite losing probably their top playmaker for most of the season in WR Sammie Stroughter and having arguably the worst QB play in the conference and quite possibly in the nation.

The Beavers won behind the legs of HB Yvenson Bernard and a stout defense that topped the nation in run defense. The defense may have led the way last season but this season Oregon State will have to do it with a whole new front seven on defense. HB Yvenson Bernard is gone. There is a huge question mark at QB. Will Riley put his faith behind the lefty, Sean Canfield or go with the more mobile Lyle Moevao? Neither QB played well at all last season as both were turnover machines. OSU QBs had a touchdown to interception ratio of 1:2. Not good.

On the bright side, Stroughter has been given a medical red-shirt and will play a final season for the Beavers. (I have to create him since EA left him off the roster.) This will give the Beaver QBs a potent weapon to throw to and Stroughter will help in field position with his explosive kick return abilities. Another potential weapon was discovered late in the season in a quick 5'7" WR by the name of James Rodgers who just about single handedly won the Emerald Bowl with his end around carries. The offensive line is still anchored by G Jeremy Perry and OSU should have a solid secondary led by CB Brandon Hughes.

The Beavers could fall flat on their face this year or could be a surprising team in the Pac-10. Nobody should count out Mike Riley though.

          Oregon State at Stanford

Palo Alto, CA - The Beavers kicked off the season against the Stanford Cardinal under a beautiful, sunny sky in Palo Alto, California. Stanford did not get off to a very good start as Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard threw a floater over the middle of the field which was easily picked off by Beaver SS Bryan Payton. Oregon State was able to capitalize off the turnover with a methodical drive led by OSU QB Sean Canfield which was finished off with a nine yard TD pass to TE Gabe Miller on a playaction rollout to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead.

Stanford would look to strike back as Pritchard got the Cardinal in position for a 47 yard field goal attempt but the kicker missed the attempt. The Beavers would find themselves in a 4th & 1 inside the redzone as the 1st quarter came to an end. OSU head coach Mike Riley would think it over but decided to kick the field goal and OSU K Justin Kahut would put it through the uprights to give Oregon State a 10-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Beaver CB David Ross left the field with a dislocated wrist and missed the remainder of the game. Neither team's offense could get into any kind of rythm in the 2nd quarter and despite a hot start by the Beavers, they would only have a 10-0 lead at halftime.

It had appeared that Stanford was dead in the water and the Beavers would cruise to an easy victory but Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh must have fired up his team at halftime because they came out with a new attitude to start the second half. Early in the 3rd quarter, Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard launched a deep ball to WR Richard Sherman who was in single coverage with OSU CB Keenan Lewis. Both players went up for the ball but WR Sherman came down with it and walked into the endzone to make it 10-7 waking up the Stanford crowd.

The momentum was definitely in favor of the Cardinal after the big play. For the Beavers, it even seemed that the officials had been influenced by the momentum when OSU QB Sean Canfield found WR Sammie Stroughter across the middle of the field for a first down but Stroughter was gang tackled by four Cardinal defenders and fumbled the ball. Stanford recovered and set themselves up with excellent field position. Stroughter and Canfield were screaming at the officials claiming that his knee was down before the ball came out. Riley appeared to want to challenge the call but Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard alertly snapped the ball quickly and OSU could not do anything about it. It was not long before Pritchard found WR Doug Baldwin for a 15 yard TD connection to put the Cardinal up 14-10.

The Beavers finally responded when Canfield threw to HB Jeremy Francis on a screen pass where he found a whole lot of green and was not tackled until he had picked up 38 yards. Canfield would finish off the drive with another pass to Francis out of the backfield. This time he found him over the middle in the endzone for a nine yard TD to regain the Beavers the lead 17-14.

As the 4th quarter was underway, Pritchard made a catastrophic error throwing another floater which was picked off by CB Keenan Lewis who took it all the way back to the house to put the Beavers up by 10 at 24-14.

OSU CB Keenan Lewis with a pick-six.

          Highlight-OSU CB Keenan Lewis pick-six

Despite the pick-six, Stanford was not finished as Pritchard led an impressive drive finished off with a TD pass to his TE Jim Dray from two yards out to make it 24-21 with 3:12 left in the game. Stanford would get the ball back with :57 left on the clock as OSU was unable to move the chains. Pritchard would lead his team into a position to kick a 47 yard field goal with :05 left in the game. But the attempt was wide right and Oregon State escaped with a road win to start the season.

Oregon State (1-0) at #12 Penn State (1-0)

State College, PA - The Beavers have achieved some success in the last few years but one thing they have not been able to do in this stretch is win against a quality team on the road. Oregon State gets into these nationally televised non-conference games against quality teams but does not play well. Beaver fans might want to look away at this point. Last year it was Cincinatti that beat the Beavers badly. In the past, the Beavers have lost to Boise State and Louisville in blowouts as well. Then there was the heartbreaking loss to LSU.

The Beavers would get a chance to put the past behind them and open a new door if they could only beat the #12 Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium which is never an easy task. However the Penn State crowd had other plans for Oregon State as the Beavers were greeted with an unfriendly welcome from the rowdy fans.

OSU would not help their situation any as Penn State quickly got on the scoreboard when PSU QB Daryll Clark found WR Derrick Williams deep on a corner route where Williams went up and made the grab. Then Williams spun out of a tackle and took it to the house for a 57 yard TD to give the Nittany Lions a quick 7-0 lead.

PSU WR Derrick Williams spins out of a tackle and takes it to the house for a 57 yd TD.

Things would go from bad to worse though when OSU was forced to punt to Williams. On the punt return Williams would break out of a weak tackling attempt and make his way for the sideline and then cut back where he found a whole lot of green. Only P Sean Sehnem was left and Williams made a quick side step and Sehnem whiffed on the tackle as Williams found his way in the endzone for the second time of the 1st quarter to put PSU up 14-0 with the 88 yard punt return.

Williams easily avoids the punter to get his second TD of the quarter.

Highlight-PSU WR Derrick Williams punt return td

It would appear it could not get any worse for the Beavers but OSU QB Sean Canfield tried to get a ball to WR Sammie Stroughter on a curl route but SS Lydell Sargeant snagged it away for an interception. It really appeared that Canfield was completely rattled by the Penn State fans and the big plays by Derrick Williams did not help matters as the stadium just seemed electric.

Finally, the Beavers got a break when OSU CB Brandon Hughes got an interception. The turnover would lead to a 15 yard TD pass from Canfield to WR Kyle Brown. Canfield threw a laser in the back of the endzone in tight coverage on the play. It was probably one of the most impressive passes of his career. The touchdown put OSU in the game down only 14-7.

The Beavers seemed to tighten up their pass coverage as Clark was unable to connect with Williams as easily as he was earlier in the game. This would eventually lead to Clark throwing another interception. This time it was CB Keenan Lewis with the pick as Clark was attempting to connect deep with Williams but it was overthrown for an easy interception.

Unfortunately, Canfield could not capitalize on the turnover as PSU CB Lydell Sargeant would pick him off and return it to the OSU 27 yard line. It appeared PSU would take a two score lead but Clark threw a terrible pass into the endzone which was easily intercepted by OSU SS Bryan Payton. It would be 14-7 Penn State at the half.

In the second half, Oregon State would try to get a ground game going fairly successfully as HB Jeremy Francis was finding the holes. This allowed a playaction that found WR Chris Johnson wide open across the middle of the field where Canfield threw a strike. Johnson made the catch in stride and easily sped into the endzone for a 37 yard TD to tie up the game 14-14.

OSU WR Chris Johnson ties up the game with the 37 yd TD grab.

It all seemed to be going well for Oregon State. They had calmed the crowd. The defense was shutting down the PSU offense. Francis was running well. Unfortunately, all that came to an end when the Beavers found themselves deep in their own side of the field. Canfield threw a duck that was easily picked off by CB A.J. Wallace who easily took it back for a pick-six to put PSU up 21-14.

Just like that, OSU found themselves down by a touchdown. Clark almost put PSU up by 14 but TE#82 dropped a ball in the endzone which forced a FG to put the Nittany Lions ahead 24-14 going into the 4th quarter.

The Beaver offense put together a 13 play methodical drive that was finished off with a one yard TD run by HB Jeremy Francis to make it 24-21. Penn State would march back down the field to the red zone. Unfortunately, Clark would throw another red zone interception trying to connect with WR Deion Butler but OLB Isaiah Cook was there to make the pick.

Oregon State would have a chance to tie the game with just a field goal. Canfield led the team down the field. The lefty QB finally would find WR Chris Johnson at the 4 yard line. The ball was thrown behind him and Johnson made a nice catch. It appeared OSU head coach Mike Riley would have to make a decision of whether to go for the win from the PSU 4 yard line or kick a field goal and tie the game for OT with only :11 on the clock.

However, it was determined by review that Johnson had trapped the ball and it was ruled incomplete. The Beavers now found themselves in no man's land. A field goal would be tough from that range but it would be a gamble to try and get more yards. With :11 on the clock, Canfield took a snap out of shotgun but he could not find anybody open. Instead of alertly hurrying out of the pocket and throwing the ball away, Canfield took a costly sack. OSU would be forced to try a 56 yard FG attempt. Penn State head coach Joe Paterno called a time out to ice the kicker. The suspense was quickly gone as OSU K Justin Kahut kicked a dud which landed in the middle of the endzone. Oregon State lost another heartbreaker on national television on the road against a quality team.

Hampton will likely be a WR and already has offers from Cal, Oregon State, and UCLA. He is not the fastest guy on the field but he has a quick burst and the ability to separate from press coverage.

Corvallis, OR - Oregon State hosted the Hawaii Warriors in the Beavers' home opener. It would be an important game for both teams. Hawaii would like to show that they are still a team to be feared despite the departure of June Jones and Colt Brennan. The Warriors were coming off a surprising three point loss to Florida losing by only 23-20. A win against Oregon State could set the Warriors up for a good season. The Beavers would try to get back on track after losing a close one in Happy Valley against Penn State.

The excitement was definitely in the air at Reser Stadium. The Beavers came out wearing their orange jerseys and were fired up for this one. It did appear early on that the Beaver offense was running on all cylandars on their first offensive possession. OSU QB Sean Canfield was hitting receivers all over the field and it was not long before they found themselves at the Hawaii 2 yard line. After a failed rush by HB Jeremy Francis, the next play saw Canfield fake the handoff to Francis and Canfield threw an out pattern to TE Howard Croom but Hawaii MLB#44 was able to pick off the pass in the endzone and then take it the length of the field for a pick-six. The disastrous turnover by Canfield put the Warriors up 7-0.

After the turnover, Canfield would attempt to regain his composure but he would not get any help from his HB Francis as he would drop a short pass and it would be intercepted by Hawaii CB#2 for Canfield's second interception of the quarter. Warrior QB Tyler Graunke wasted no time scoring on a six yard TD pass to WR#5 to put Hawaii ahead 14-0.

Just when it could not get any worse for the Beavers, WR Chris Johnson fumbled on the kick return which was recovered by Hawaii. Fortunately for OSU, the play was reversed as Johnson was clearly down before he lost control of the ball. It would not matter though as Canfield would throw his third interception. Then Graunke would find WR#5 for a short pass but OSU CB Brandon Hughes was unable to wrap him up and WR#5 made his way for a 41 yard gain all the way inside the five yard line. On the next play, Graunke found WR#89 for a very short TD pass though the extra point was missed so Hawaii was ahead 20-0.

Hawaii QB Tyler Graunke finds WR#89 for his second TD pass of the game.

The Beavers were able to get a 41 yard FG before the end of the half to finally get on the scoreboard to make it 20-3 Hawaii at the half.

As the second half got underway, Reser Stadium was dead quiet as there really was nothing to cheer for. Finally, the Beavers would give them something to cheer for when on a playaction pass, Canfield threw a strike over the middle to WR Sammie Stroughter in single coverage for an 18 yard TD to put the Beavers in reach down 20-10. This would be Stroughter's first TD of the season. The playmaker really has not done a whole lot thus far.

OSU WR Sammie Stroughter catches his first TD of the season.

The momentum was definitely with OSU. The Beaver defense was shutting down the Hawaii pass offense. Neither team could run the ball to save their lives. Maybe Hawaii can get away without a ground game but Mike Riley's offense seems to rely on some kind of a ground game. With Francis having a terrible game on the ground, Canfield was forced to throw into coverage which would lead to another interception.

However, as the 4th quarter opened, OSU SS Bryan Payton would pick off Graunke as the Hawaii QB got a little too confident. Unfortunately, Oregon State was unable to capitalize as Stroughter would be stripped of the ball inside the red zone which the Warriors quickly recovered. Though Oregon State would get another FG midway through the 4th quarter to make it a one score lead for Hawaii at 20-13.

The Warriors would start milking the clock marching all the way into the redzone and scoring a FG with only 1:08 left in the game. The field goal sent many of the fans to the parking lot as there was little hope that Oregon State could mount a comeback and those fans would be right as Canfield would be sacked and then throw his 5th interception on the day to give the Beavers a humiliating loss on their home turf 23-13.

Four star DT Mark Crum will be at the upcoming game between USC and Oregon State in Corvallis. Crum already has offers from Arizona State, Cal, UCLA, and Oregon State. It appears the highly recruited DT is very high on ASU but an early visit to Oregon State could have an impact.

                              #9 USC (1-1) at Oregon State (1-2)

Corvallis, OR - This one would appear to be a mismatch from the beginning as the Beavers have looked absolutely awful in their last two non-conference games. USC, despite losing unimpressively to Ohio State in Los Angeles, would have an easy game on their hands against a struggling Beaver team. OSU QB Sean Canfield was coming off a five interception performance and all the signs are pointing to him going to back to his turnover issues again. Also, USC still remembers the upset loss two years ago at Reser. USC head coach Pete Carrol could not let that happen again. As what usually happens when USC shows up at Reser, the weather turns as there was a pretty good downpoor of showers as the game kicked off.

The rain seemed to play a role early on as neither team could get any kind of offense going. USC QB Mark Sanchez would make the first mistake of the game trying to throw deep to WR Patrick Turner, but it was picked off by CB Keenan Lewis. However OSU missed a long 50 yard field goal attempt at the end of the 1st quarter as they were unable to take advantage of the field position.

Finally, Canfield would throw deep on a 3rd & 12 play to WR Chris Johnson who came down with the bomb and took it into the endzone for a 54 yard TD to put Oregon State ahead 7-0.

OSU WR Chris Johnson comes down with the 54 yard bomb.

It did not take long for USC to strike back though as Sanchez faked the handoff to HB Joe McKnight and threw a bullet to Turner for an 18 yard TD to tie the game 7-7.

USC WR Patrick Turner celebrates in the endzone after scoring on the 18 yard bullet from Sanchez.

OSU would take a 10-7 lead into the locker rooms at halftime as they would get a field goal in the remaining seconds of the half.

Oregon State came out with confidence in the second half marching right down the field. Canfield would roll out to his left on a playfake and find a wide open TE Gabe Miller for a 13 yard TD to put Oregon State up 17-7. That is when Reser officially erupted as the Beavers were now up by two scores.

On the ensuing kick off, USC WR Vidal Hazelton took the return and queezed into a seam and was gone, taking it to the house for a 90 yard kick return for a TD. Now USC was only down 17-14.

WR Vidal Hazelton finds the seam on his way to a 90 yard kick return for a TD.

USC could not ask for a better time for a big play on special teams. The play silenced Reser. Despite the big play, the Beaver offense went back to work and marched down the field effectively until HB Jeremy Francis was lit up by USC OLB Brian Cushing and Francis lost control of the ball which USC quickly recovered. The turnover set up a 30 yard field goal to tie the game 17-17 with 3:25 remaining.

Again, despite the setback, Canfield got his team together and marched down the field efficiently setting up a possible game winning 33 yard field goal attempt with :03 left in the game. OSU K Justin Kahut had all the eyes on him as he nailed it right through the uprights and celebrated with his team as the Beavers had knocked off the USC Trojans 20-17 at Reser Stadium again.

OSU K Justin Kahut kicks the game-winning field goal.
