      BCS National Championship
      #2 Florida (13-0) vs #1 Ohio State (12-0)

Miami, FL - One word comes to mind that represents Ohio State's season. That word is dominant. The Buckeyes won every game by more than ten points. Even USC was handily defeated by Ohio State. QB Todd Boeckman was an extremely efficient quarterback only throwing three interceptions. The Buckeyes even suffered a huge setback, losing Heisman hopeful HB Chris Wells for most of the season. However, they lost one Heisman hopeful and gained another in HB Brandon Saine who stepped in filled the role perfectly. So perfectly in fact, that he came away with the Heisman Trophy himself. Florida on the other hand had to battle through the competitive SEC which came down to the conference championship with two undefeated teams in Auburn and Florida. Florida smashed Auburn and found themselves in the National Championship to face a heavily favored Ohio State. Does this sound familiar anyone? Could Ohio State make the third time a charm or would they lose the National Championship to an SEC team again? On a side note, this game would feature a Heisman Trophy player on each team in Florida QB Tim Tebow and Ohio State HB Brandon Saine. Though Saine would not start at HB as Wells was back in the line up.

Everybody was all set to watch a game in beautiful, sunny Miami but Mother Nature did not want to cooperate as a rain storm showed up for the game. Early on it was clear that this was going to be a defensive struggle. It appeared Florida QB Tim Tebow was going to take over the game with his athleticism as he made some nice rushes leading his team into the red zone. However, the Buckeye defense shut down the Gators in the red zone forcing a field goal to give Florida a 3-0 lead.

Then the unexpected occurred as OSU QB Todd Boeckeman threw an interception. Though Tebow was unable to make anything of it as he too threw an interception. Finally, Boeckman led a drive and capped it off with a short pass to WR#4 over the middle for a one-yard touchdown pass to put Ohio State on top 7-3.

Buckeye QB Todd Boeckman throws the first touchdown pass to WR#4.

Tebow did not seem to learn from his earlier mistake as he threw into double coverage where Buckeye SS Kurt Coleman made the pick. This was Tebow's second interception of the first quarter. He also came into this game with only three interceptions. Boeckman quickly capitalized on the turnover as he threw a short pass to Heisman HB Brandon Saine who spun out of a tackle and showcased his elite speed for a 31-yard touchdown reception to put Ohio State up 14-3.

OSU HB Brandon Saine celebrates in the endzone after showing why he won the Heisman.

Florida seemed to have something going offensively as Tebow was finding open receivers over the middle. That was until Gator TE Aaron Hernandez met Buckeye MLB James Laurinaitis who lit him up, and the ball came loose which Ohio State recovered. The Buckeyes would take a 14-3 lead into second quarter.

The second quarter was even more of a defensive struggle Boeckman would uncharacteristically throw another interception. Though the OSU defense would only allow a field goal to put Florida back in the game down only 14-6. Both Florida and Ohio State would miss a field goal in closing minute of the first half and Ohio State would lead at the end of the first half.

The defenses even played better in the third quarter as Florida had a three and out. Next Ohio State had their own three and out. Then Gator HB Kestahn Moore was hit low, upended and lost control of the ball which the Buckeyes recovered. Hoever, Ohio State could not do anything with it either.

Going into the fourth quarter the Gators missed a field goal wide right from 54 yards out. Boeckman would lead his team down the field and put them in position to score a 29-yard field goal giving Ohio State a 17-6 lead.

Tebow seemed to finally move the chains a few times before an option run where he was stripped of the ball which the Buckeyes again recovered. The relentless Buckeye defense proved too much for Florida and Ohio State would finish off the Gators 17-6 in Buckeye fashion with strong defense.

Florida QB Tim Tebow is stripped of the ball by OLB Marcus Freeman.

                          Preseason Preview

When we last left the Beavers they had just lost the Las Vegas Bowl to Utah in heartbreaking fashion after previously losing the Civil War to Oregon in another heartbreaker. That was last season. It is time to kick off a new season. There are many questions on this Oregon State team to start the new season.

Gone are the standout defensive backs from last year as CBs Brandon Hughes and Keenan Lewis have graduated. FS Al Afalava and SS Bryan Payton have also graduated leaving the Beavers with four new defensive backs to start in the secondary. In addition, the Beavers lost their entire linebacking corps and will start three new LBs. DE Simi Kuli will anchor the defensive line and will clearly be the strength of an inexperienced defense as the defense only brings back two starters.

The offense will be led by senior QB Sean Canfield. Though Canfield finished with second most interceptions in the nation, he did throw 23 touchdowns. Canfield will need to limit his turnovers if this team will have any hopes at having a successful campaign in 2009. HB Jeremy Francis will start at runningback again despite struggling last season. Though the five star true freshman HB Marvin Quinn will be waiting for his chance to get his touches. WR Kyle Brown and WR Darrell Catchings will try to fill the big shoes left by WR Sammie Stroughter. One of these receivers will need to step up big. Expect TE Gabe Miller to be targeted early and often.

The pundits are predicting the Beavers to finish seventh in the Pac-10 and are ranked 49th nationally. One thing the Beavers have going for them is a much easier non-conference schedule than last year and four home games to start the season including two bye weeks before conference play begins with two home games where Oregon State will host Arizona State and UCLA. Those two games could go a long way in deciding how successful OSU is this season as it will get a lot tougher after the UCLA game. Oregon State will have to travel to Cal, USC, and Oregon in the Civil War. The final game will come at BYU in what will not be an easy game. If the Beavers struggle early this season, look for a very long season for Beaver fans.

New Mexico State at Oregon State

Corvallis, OR- The 2009 season is finally underway for the Beavers as the long wait for college football is over. Oregon State hosted New Mexico State on a beautiful day in the Willamette Valley. The Beavers looked excited to get a new season started and put last season behind them.

OSU HB Jeremy Francis went down early with a strained pectoral that is going to sideline him for two weeks. In came the five star HB Marvin Quinn who got a nice ovation from the fans. Quinn took a simple handoff up the middle and was stripped of the ball for a fumble which the Aggies recovered. Quinn's first collegiate carry was a fumble. Not exactly what the Beavers were expecting.

Though Quinn got off to a bad start, OSU QB Sean Canfield got himself off to a great start as his first pass was a strike to slot WR Shane Morales who caught the ball on a crossing route where he took it the distance for a 64-yard touchdown putting Oregon State ahead 7-0. The Beavers would also tack on a field goal as the first quarter came to an end as Oregon State had a 10-0 lead.

OSU QB Sean Canfield's first pass of the season goes for a 64-yard touchdown to WR Shane Morales.

The Aggies finally made a play on offense as a 37-yard run by HB Tonny Glynn set them up in the red zone. NMSU found themselves at the goalline with a fourth-and-goal situation. The Aggies decided to go for it and OSU MLB Keaton Kristick appeared to stop Glynn in front of the endzone but there was a facemask penalty called. However the Beaver defense stuffed the Aggies at the goalline again forcing a field goal in what was a huge victory for the young defense making it 10-3 as New Mexico State scored a field goal.

The Aggies would get another big play on a 63-yard punt return by WR#2 which put NMSU inside the red zone again. Again the Beavers held the Aggies to a field goal to make it 10-6. OSU QB Sean Canfield would later find a wide open WR Darrell Catchings who made a move and was gone to the house for a 42-yard touchdown to put Oregon State up 17-6.

New Mexico State countered back with an impressive drive that was finished off with a pass from QB J.J. McDermott to HB Tonny Glynn who made a spectacular catch along the sideline of the endzone keeping his knee in bounds to put the Aggies back in the game down only 17-13. The Beavers would tack on a last second field goal at the end of the fist half to give OSU a 20-13 lead at halftime.

Aggie HB Tonny Glynn makes an impressive catch along the sideline of the endzone.

The Beavers looked impressive offensively and defensively in the second half. Canfield hooked up with Catchings again as the Aggies were unable to tackle the receiver who took it in for his second touchdown from 43 yards out to put OSU up 27-13.

Canfield hooks up with WR Darrell Catchings again for his second touchdown.

The situation would go from bad to worse for New Mexico State as QB J.J. McDermott would throw three pick-sixes. Two for OSU FS James Dockery and one for CB Tim Clark. The three interceptions for touchdowns blew the game wide open as Oregon State would close out the Aggies 51-20 in what turned out to be a blowout. About the only thing the Beavers could not be happy about was the pedestrian debut of HB Marvin Quinn who was only able to muster 39 yards on 17 carries. The running game will need to improve if Oregon State is to continue to be successful. The Beavers will look to continue their success against Utah next week as they will try to avenge their Las Vegas Bowl loss.

OSU FS James Dockery with one of the three pick-sixes for the Beavers.

Utah (0-0) at Oregon State (1-0)

Corvallis, OR - This marked the third time that these two teams have met in less than a year. The Beavers were looking to avenge the loss in the Las Vegas Bowl by defeating Utah and hopefully this would be the last time these two teams would meet for a while.

The Utes marched right down the field on their opening drive as the Beaver defense was unable to make tackles. The defense finally put it together when the Utes were inside the red zone as the Beavers forced a Utah field goal which was missed. This was another big stop for the Beaver defense in the red zone. Oregon State would put a nice drive together mainly with the arm of QB Sean Canfield who was throwing underneath the defense. OSU WR Kyle Brown was the recipient of many of Canfield's passes. The Beavers would put three points on the board with a 45-yard field goal to go out in front 3-0.

The Beaver defense would come up with another play when CB Tim Clark came up with an interception. OSU HB Marvin Quinn would find a big hole at the goalline and take it in from two yards out for his first career touchdown putting OSU ahead 10-0.

OSU HB Marivn Quinn takes the handoff and scores his first career touchdown from two yards out.

Utah would finally get a play to go their way when Canfield was sacked and fumbled in the pocket which the Utes recovered. Unfortunately, Utah freshman QB Corbin Louks rolled out to his right and threw across his body to the left where OSU CB David Ross was there for an easy interception which he took to the house giving the Beavers a 17-0 lead. The Beavers would tack on a last minute field goal to give them a 20-0 lead at the half.

OSU CB David Ross takes the pick to the house.

The Beavers never looked back in the second half as Utah could not get anything going. The Oregon State offense did not look particularly sharp either as Quinn had very little running room. The freshman tailback was stuffed over and over again but was able to score another touchdown from inside the five-yard line as the Beavers would finish off this one 27-0 in what was a lopsided affair from the beginning.

                                Utah 0

                                QB Louks: 11-21, 103 yds, 2 int
HB Wide: 12 car, 24 yds
WR Brooks: 5 rec, 63 yds
DE Kruger: 7 tkl, tfl, sk, fmbrec

                                Oregon State 27

QB Canfield: 21-27, 175 yds, fl
                                HB Quinn: 28 car, 57 yds, 2 td, 6 rec, 37 yds
WR Brown: 6 rec, 72 yds
CB Ross: 5 tkl, int, defl, td
