      Heisman Trophy Presentation

And the 2014 Heisman goes to...

      QB Matt Thomas SR(RS) (Nebraska)
      235-343, 3434 yds, 43 td, 5 int, 96 car, 413 yds, 4 rush td

      Runner Ups

      QB Blake Ford JR(RS) (Missouri)
      283-407, 3914 yds, 47 td, 9 int

      HB Justin Holiday SR(RS) (Tulane)
      265 car, 1401 yds, 13 td, 35 rec, 539 yds, 8 rec td

      WR Patrick Rackley SO (Clemson)
      83 rec, 1103 yds, 15 td

      HB Mike Martin SO(RS) (Texas)
      211 car, 1352 yds, 10 td, 36 rec, 559 yds, 7 rec td

New York, NY - The Heisman Trophy was handed out today and to nobody's surprise, Nebraska QB Matt Thomas walked away the coveted award. Fellow Big-12 QB Blake Ford of Missouri seemed like the only real competitor after his unbelievable six touchdown performance in the Big-12 Championship against Oklahoma helped lead Missouri to the Fiesta Bowl. With Thomas already taking home the Maxwell award and the O'brien award for the best QB, he was the clear favorite to win the Heisman. After finishing 5th in the voting last year, Matt Thomas was able to surpass his 34 touchdown passes with an incredible 43 touchdowns passes. And even more amazing, Thomas matched his five interception total from the previous season. Though Thomas was surpassed by Ford's 47 touchdown passes. Ford will likely be next season's preseason favorite to win next year's Heisman if he decides to stay for his senior year.

Coming in 3rd was Tulane HB Justin Holiday who finished with over 1900 total yards and 21 total touchdowns to almost single-handedly lead the Green Wave to a 12-1 season and a MAC championship. In 4th was this year's Belitnikoff award winner, WR Patick Rackley of Clemson. Just a sophomore, Rackley had over 1100 yards and 15 touchdowns. Rackley took the college football world by storm midway during the season but had a poor showing against Florida State in Clemson's only. Rounding out the list was another sophomore in Texas HB Mike Martin. The winner of the Doak Walker award for the best running back, Martin gained over 1900 total yards and scored 17 total touchdowns in a dominants season for the Longhorns. Look for Martin to be on everybody's preseason list next season.

Cool.... UCLA is gonna be in the LV Bowl? You sure... They're top ten... Couldn't that end them up in the Orange or the Fiesta?

Yes. UCLA is in the Las Vegas Bowl. I was tied with USC but I beat them in the head-to-head so that gave me the conference. Cal and UCLA finished tied but Cal beat them in the head-to-head. The Bruins are ranked 7th but that was not high enough to get them into a BCS bowl.

                #16 Michigan (10-2) vs #5 Oregon State (11-1)

Pasadena, CA - When your a team with a drought of not being to the Rose Bowl since 1965 before last season, of course it is a big deal to make it to the granddaddy of them all. But for the Beavers, it felt a bit like "been there, done that." However, Beaver fans clad in orange and black were still excited to make the trip to Pasadena for another Rose Bowl. Oregon State would try to make it back-to-back Rose Bowl victories with a win over a Michigan team that finished undefeated in the very tough Big Ten. The Beavers had hoped to get 5th year senior HB Tim Taylor back from his broken ankle. But Taylor would not suit up so Beaver fans had already seen his last game in the orange black.

The Wolverines opened up the game with a long, methodical drive as QB Ryan Sims was able to continue finding the open receiver for a 1st down. Finally, inside OSU territory on 3rd down, a Sims pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage. Thus Michigan had to settle for a 42-yard field goal to take the early 3-0 lead.

Oregon State quickly countered back when HB Derrick Andrews broke containment on the outside and was off to the races down the sideline where he was caught and brought down at the Michigan 3-yard line. Not long after, backup HB Derek Holmes fought across the goal line on a 1-yard TD scamper to put OSU in front 7-3.

OSU HB Derek Holmes fights across the goal line on a 1-yard TD scamper.

On the ensuing possession, the Wolverines found themselves with a 3rd-and-short near midfield. HB Kevin Fox got the handoff and was immediately stuffed by OSU DE Brandon Webb in the backfield. As a result, Michigan was forced to punt after a three-and-out. On the ensuing punt return, Bill Faaeteete was able to break some tackles for a gain of 32 yards to give OSU the ball near midfield. Unfortunately the terrific field position was squandered when QB Justin Rust rolled out and threw an ill-advised pass into the flat to TE Adam Banks. Michigan CB Brad Love was in the way, made the pick and took it in for six. Just like that, the Wolverines recaptured the lead, 10-7.

Michigan CB Brad Love takes the pick in for six.

As the 2nd quarter started, the Beavers were not done shooting themselves in the foot. QB Justin Rust tried to get a ball to WR Brian Horn on a short dumpoff. But Michigan CB Brad Love jumped the route and stole the ball away from Horn for his 2nd interception of the game. Fortunately for the Beavers, Michigan QB Ryan Sims was picked off by OSU OLB Cole Alexander. Oregon State had dodged a huge bullet. The Beavers found their rhythm again on offense with a balanced attack. Inside Michigan territory, Rust was given all day in the pocket, floated a pass up over the Wolverine secondary where it landed in the hands of WR Bill Faaeteete for a 26-yard TD to regain the lead for OSU, 14-10.

OSU WR Bill Faaeteete open for a 26-yard TD reception.

After the touchdown pass, the defense picked up for both sides as Michigan was held to a three-and-out. Then Rust was sacked twice to force Oregon State to punt from deep inside their own end zone. Nick Carpenter boomed it as Michigan took over at midfield. Where they were again held to another three-and-out. Oregon State had the ball with under a minute left. Rust was able to the Beavers out to midfield with a couple completions to TE Adam Banks. Then Rust found enough time to bomb it deep to WR Brian Horn in man-coverage. Horn jumped up and made a tremendous catch with the corner draped all over him. In the process of making the catch, Horn was taken down in mid-air, crossing the goal line for a spectacular 48-yard TD reception. Rust ran down the length of the field to celebrate with his Canadian teammate. But Horn was still on the ground and was now holding his ankle. Horn had sold out his body to make the tremendous catch for his team but he would leave with what was determined to be an ACL sprain at halftime. Oregon State took a 21-10 lead into the break.

OSU WR Brian Horn makes a tremendous 48-yard TD reception.

The Beavers continued making big plays on offense to start the 3rd quarter. QB Justin Rust gunned it over the middle, hitting TE Adam Banks on a post in stride who took it to the house for a 44-yard TD and putting Oregon State out in front 28-10.

OSU TE Adam Banks take it to the house on a 44-yard TD reception.

The Wolverines continued to fail to find any answer to put points on the board. HB Kevin Fox showed glimpses of stardom on some runs, but Michigan just could not move the ball consistently. And would again go three-and-out. However, Michigan's fortunes were about to change as Rust was tried to go over the middle to TE Adam Banks again. This time Michigan CB William Brooks picked him off. Michigan was able to finally move the ball and soon found themselves just inside OSU territory. It would be fourth-and-one wher Rich Rodriguez decided to risk going for it. Fox got the handoff and scurried through a small hole to easily get the 1st down. On the next play, QB Ryan Sims rifled it to WR Scott Smith deep over the middle where OSU FS Scott Vinson tackled air. Smith avoided Vinson and raced into the end zone for a 43-yard TD to cut the lead to 28-17.

Michigan QB Ryan Sims rifles it to WR Scott Smith for a 43-yard TD.

Heading into the 4th quarter, it seemed like we had a game again. OSU QB Justin Rust was sacked again. One area that the Wolverines seemed to have an advantage was at defensive line as they continued to pressure Rust. Oregon State would be forced to punt. The Wolverines now had been given a window of opportunity to make a comeback. But just when it looked like Michigan was about to get back into the game, Sims was picked off by OSU CB John Biggers.

The Beavers took the opportunity to milk the clock with a long, methodical drive as HB Derrick Andrews pounded it up the middle with success. The drive only stalled at the goal line as the Michigan defense made a nice goal line stand to prevent either Andrews or Holmes from getting into the end zone. As a result, the Beavers settled for an 18-yard chip shot to take a 31-17 lead with only 1:37 left to go in the game. On the ensuing possession, the Wolverines moved into OSU territory with a few passes but showed no sign of urgency. The clock ticked triple zero and the Beavers celebrated back-to-back Rose Bowl victories.

                  #9 Auburn (12-1) vs #3 Penn State (11-1)

                  Nittany Lions Win Sloppy Contest

PSU sophomore kicker Adam Holley boots the 27-yard game-winning field goal.

New Orleans, LA - Penn State followed a quick Auburn three-and-out by easily marching down the field where on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line, QB Greg Medlock gunned it to WR Stan Baker for a TD to give the Nittany Lions an early 7-0 lead. Later, PSU HB Luke Williams showed some tremendous lateral movement to get outside and break a 32-yard run. The big run would set up a 37-yard field goal to put Penn State in front 10-0.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Auburn QB Elliott Sharp threw up a duck that was easily picked off by the talented fourth-year junior PSU FS Cliffard Parker (94 ovr). It would be the first of many turnovers in the game. Not long after, Auburn OLB Sam Cabral forced a fumble from PSU HB Luke Williams for a Tiger recovery. Taking advantage of the turnover, Sharp conected with TE BJ Lee for a gain of 25 yards to set up the Tigers inside the 5-yard line. Unfortunately, Sharp was sacked by PSU junior OLB Larry Peters (90 ovr). As a result, the Tigers only were able to get a 35-yard FG to make it 10-3. But Auburn would soon get the ball back when PSU QB Greg Medlock was intercepted by Auburn sophomore CB Tiger McIntosh (87 ovr). With great field position, Sharp dumped it to WR Chip Taylor who was able to elude a PSU defender and take it to the house for a 29-yard TD to tie the game 10-10.

However, PSU QB Greg Medlock countered back when he gunned a deep pass over the middle, threading the needle into WR Adam Fields. Who then borke a tackle to get into the end zone for a 29-yard TD to put the Lions back in front 17-10.

Sharp would find WR Chip Taylor for a 2nd TD connection early in the 3rd quarter. This one for a 15-yard TD to tie the game 17-17. Penn State regained the lead off of a 43-yard field goal to make it 20-17 PSU. Later for Auburn, QB Elliott Sharp would fake to HB Erik Dixon on one of numerous option reads. Sharp kept the ball and found a hole, eluded a tackle, made his way toward the sideline where he eluded another PSU defender. Sharp raced down the field. When the last Nittany Lion dove in desperation, it was clear Sharp was taking it all the way for an amazing 73-yard TD run. The Tigers were now on top 24-20.

Penn State would back in scoring position after a 26-yard run by PSU red shirt freshman HB Luke Williams (88 ovr). Unfortunately, Medlock would be picked off by Auburn OLB Sam Cabral. Though the Lions would get the ball back when Sharp was intercepted by PSU OLB Cameron Penn off of a deflection.

Penn State started the 4th quarter with a 2-yard TD run by WR Stan Baker to regain the lead for the Nittany Lions, 27-24. Then the Lions got the ball right back when Sharp was picked off by PSU true freshman CB Greg Moore (84 ovr). Fortunately for the Tigers, the Lions did nothing with the excellent position and were forced to punt. After a struggle for field position, Auburn was able to tie the game on a 39-yard field goal with 1:34 left to go.

PSU QB Greg Medlock put the team on his shoulder and led the Nittany Lions right down the field. All the way to the Tiger 20-yard line where astonishingly with :47 left Medlock was picked off by Auburn FS Jonathan Carey. Even more astonishing was that on the very next play, Sharp was picked off by PSU FS Cliffard Parker for his 2nd interception of the game. So with :05 left in the game, PSU sophomore kicker Adam Holley became the hero with a 27-yard game-winning field goal. 30-27 PSU.

                  #9 Auburn 27
QB Elliott Sharp: 22-36, 232 yds, 2 td, 5 int, 9 car, 64 yds, rush td
HB Erik Dixon: 6 car, 9 yds
WR Chip Taylor: 5 rec, 81 yds, 2 td

                        #15 Missouri (12-1) vs #4 Clemson (11-1)

Mizzou WR Brent Justice with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Glendale, AZ - The extent of the excitement of the 1st quarter consisted of an interception by Mizzou CB Sean Jackson. Then later a missed 51-yard field goal by Missouri as it would be 0-0 heading into the 2nd quarter.

Finally, the Heisman runner up Mizzou QB Blake Ford finished off a long, methodical drive by hitting WR John Russell for a 6-yard TD to put Missouri on top 7-0. Clemson would follow that up with their best offensive possession yet as they got in position for a 44-yard field goal attempt. Unfortunately, the ball bounced off the corner of the cross bar. Missouri would tack on a late 25-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead into the half.

Clemson head coach Gary Crowton must have given an inspirational speech at halftime because Clemson came out with a new sense of urgency. Clemson opened with a fantastic drive as they got HB Chuck Jean going in the ground game. QB Morris Parrish was able to finish it off with a 3-yard TD pass to TE Brett Moses to cut it to 10-7. However on the ensuing kickoff, Mizzou WR Brent Justice turned on the afterburner and went 95 yards to the house to put Missouri in front 17-7.

Clemson would miss two field goals. The first from 47 yards out. Then in the 4th quarter, Crowton for some reason thought his kicker would be able to kick a 56 yarder which fell pathetically short. But Clemson would get the ball back when OLB Ryan Williams (99 ovr) was able to force fumble loose from Mizzou QB Blake Ford with 3:57 left to go. Clemson would face a long 4th-and-16 in the red zone. Crowton could have kicked a field goal to make it a one-score game but decided to go for it. Parrish's pass was completed but about ten yards short of the 1st down. But Clemson would get the ball back again when OLB Ryan Williams was able to force another fumble. This time from Mizzou HB Sam Scott for another Clemson fumble recovery. Unfortunately, the game was pretty much brought to an end when Mizzou CB Sean Jackson picked off Clemson QB Morris Parrish to give Missouri one of its biggest wins in years.

                          #20 Florida State (10-3) vs Pittsburgh (10-2)

                          FSU Throttles Pitt

FSU QB Ryan Johnson hurdles into the end zone on a 5-yard TD run.

Miami, FL - Florida State opened up the game by marching down the field with little Pitt resistance. HB Adam Harper would score on a 2-yard run to the left to put FSU on top 7-0. Later, the Noles tacked on a 34-yard field goal and Pitt countered with a big time 55-yard field goal to make it 10-3 FSU at the end of the 1st quarter.

As the 2nd quarter opened, the Seminoles were in position to score again. From five yards out, FSU QB Ryan Johnson on a QB keeper got some running room as the Pitt defense took the bait, going after HB Adam Harper. With only one defender to stop him, Johnson hurdled over the defender into the end zone for a 5-yard TD to put FSU in front 17-3.

Pitt responded by moving the ball but stalling in FSU territory to set up a 45-yard field goal attempt. But this time it was hooked left of the uprights. The Noles marched right back down the field and tacked on a 28-yard field goal to go up 20-3. Pitt seemed to be given an opportunity to make it a game when Johnson was picked off on a HB screen by OLB Travis Jones. However, inside the red zone, Pitt QB Gary Jones was picked off by junior FSU MLB Andy Dunn (96 ovr) to prevent the Panthers from scoring.

Pitt started off the 3rd quarter with long, methodical drive but stalled in the red zone, setting up a 29-yard chip shot. But the kick was wide left. So he can boot a 55 yarder but misses the chip shot. Florida State wasted little getting back in the red zone. Where QB Ryan Johnson gunned it over the middle to true freshman phenom WR Josh Bryant (89 ovr) who made a nice diving catch for a 19-yard TD to put the Noles up 27-3.

Pitt countered by only getting in position for another missed field goal. This time it went wide right from 47 yards. But Johnson would be picked off by Pitt FS Brett Finnerty on the ensuing possession. The Panthers finally seized the moment when Jones found HB Marcus Townsend in the flat who raced down the sideline for a 29-yard TD. Pitt failed on the 2-point attempt and was still trailing 27-9.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Noles added to their lead with a 30-yard field goal to make it 30-9. But Pitt responded as HB Jeff Fuller, in for a banged up HB Marcus Townsend went 33 yards to the house to cut the FSU lead to 30-16 with plenty of time remaining. However, FSU CB Charles Keyes took the ensuing kickoff to the house untouched for a 92-yard kick return to put the Noles in front 37-16.

If the kick return did not already put the game away, a 2nd interception for FSU SS Danny Gates did put this one away for the Seminoles.

Sorry about that. My run defense is really, really good. And for some reason, the teams that run spread offenses, don't run the ball very well. At least Michigan tries to run. But Fox is still a beast. He broke a couple ten yard runs if I recall. But for the most part he was shut down in the backfield without much of a chance.

Wow. You had an unranked team in the Orange Bowl. Because the P10 had so many BCS-worthy teams. Shit. One of 'em should have been in the Orange or the Fiesta...

How'd I do over the season?

grats on the rose bowl win. When you watch the other bowls and such, do you have specific sliders you set before the game? or do you just go with the flow
