      2011 Oregon State Preview

College football is just around the corner again. When we last left the Beavers, they had just pulled off a pretty good upset against West Virginia in the Sun Bowl. Oregon State will look to continue the momentum gained with the victory over Oregon in the Civil War and a win over a top 25 West Virginia team. Although with key losses on the offensive side of the ball, that might be a difficult task.

QB Bryan Rossner will need to be more consistent.

OSU will be led by junior QB Bryan Rossner who had a season of ups and downs just like the rest of his team. Rossner threw 22 touchdowns but had an alarming 18 interceptions. If this team is to be successful, Rossner will need to learn to stop throwing the ball to the other team. Rossner was also able to show his mobility at times but he is best at buying time with his mobility than scrambling for rushing yards. He has proven that he can thrive in a pro-style offense under OSU head coach Mike Riley but needs to be more consistent.

Can HB Marvin Quinn continue the momentum found toward the end of last season?

Behind him will be fellow junior HB Marvin Quinn who seemed to finally get it going late in the season as he was just barely able to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark. Quinn does appear to be running hard at practice but it has yet to be determined whether that will translate to gameday. Though Quinn has proven to have a nose for the end zone as he scored 15 rushing touchdowns and five touchdown receptions for a total of 20 touchdowns. Quinn will need to work extra hard this year as OSU will only bring back one starter on the offensive line for next season.

The only offensive lineman that the Beavers bring back is junior RG Grant Johnson. Johnson is also the only upper classman that OSU will have on the offensive line. Mike Riley is convinced that the left side of the line is in capable but young hands in freshman LT Jason Rushing and freshman LG Justin Smith. The three-star prospect Smith looks like he could be a good Pac-10 guard in the future. However, the Beavers will start a red-shirt freshman at center, Eric Reese, and a red-shirt sophomore at RT, Jason Sparks. The Beavers will live or die based on the play of this extremely green offensive line.

Can the Beavers make up for the loss of Catchings?

The receivers that Rossner will have to throw to will be an entirely new cast. Gone are WR Darrell Catchings, WR Kyle Brown, and TE Gabe Miller. It could be very difficult for the Beavers to make up for that much production. Senior WR James Rodgers will move from the slot in to the top role at receiver but there will also be joined by sophomore WR Brian Herring and fellow sophomore WR Marcus Sullivan. Sullivan has looked particularly good in practice as he is very elusive. He could have plenty of big plays this season. It will be interesting to see if any of these receivers can fill the big shoes left by Darrell Catchings. The loss of TE Gabe Miller could prove to be equally as tough to replace as Catchings as Miller was many times Rossner's security blanket. Red-shirt freshman TE Pete Rich will try to fill the void but look for the Beavers to use mulitple WR formations more often.

DE Kevin Frahm will need to get more pressure this year.

The defense looks to in much better shape this year and looked fantastic at the end of last season. There were some key losses that includes FS James Dockery who was the leading tackler last season. Also, both DTs, Mitchel Hunt and Brennan Olander graduated. OLBs Dwight Roberson and Tom Hansen are also gone but the Beavers should have a pretty good defensive line with senior DE Kevin Frahm looking like a possible NFL draft pick next year. Junior DE Brian Dailey will try to step up his game also. The new DTs will include sophomore Mark Crum and the four-star prospect Lee King from Pennsylvania who is looking incredible for a freshman. The defensive line should be a strength of the team this year. Though the Beavers will look to get more pressure on the QB this year as Frahm led the team with a pathetic four sacks last year.

The Beavers will start two new OLBs in red-shirt freshmen Cole Alexander and Carlos Matthews. They will be led by senior MLB Will Darkins. The front seven for Oregon State has huge potential but could show some growing pains early on.

The secondary should be very good but will the loss of FS James Dockery have a negative impact?

The secondary should again be a strength for this defense as both CBs David Ross and Mike Mayes will start again. Both had great seasons though Mayes struggled to make some key tackles at times. The coverage should not be a problem. They will be backed up by senior SS Cameron Collins who will need to step up his game with the loss of Dockery. Junior FS Matt Arnold is the new face who will try and replace Dockery's 99 tackles.

            Game of the Week
            #5 USC (1-0) at #2 Ohio State (0-0)

Chris: Welcome to College Football Gameday. Well, there weren't any good games last week as all of the powerhouses had a bunch of cupcakes scheduled. But this week we are in Columbus, Ohio for a mammoth game in week two. USC and Ohio State. USC was actually on a two game losing streak until blowing out San Jose State last week. These two teams met twice last season. USC was victorious in the first match in the Coliseum but the Trojans took a huge whoopin' by the Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl last season. There is another game of importance this Saturday that sends the Sooners to Miami to face the resurging Hurricanes. Both Ohio State and Oklahoma have murderous schdules. In addition to Ohio State playing USC, they also have Oklahoma on the schedule. That doesn't even account for the tough conferences these two teams play in. What's your thoughts on Oklahoma and Miami?

Kirk: Oklahoma has a very good QB in senior Landry Jones. He struggled through injuries last year but looks to get off to a good start this season. The Sooners also have probably one of the best receiving corps in the nation and an awesome offensive line. I should go with the Sooners but I'm going with Miami in this one. This is too big a game for the 'Canes and since they're at home early in the season I think they pull it off, bringing Miami back into the national spotlight.

Lee: This is a huge game for Miami to get their swagger back. No so fast! No way. Not gonna happen. Kirk just laid out all of the reasons why the Sooners will win today. Miami is a good team but they're not ready to compete with the Sooners. Oklahoma wins by at least two touchdowns.

Chris: Alright guys. That leaves the showdown we have here in the Horseshoe today. (Crowd cheers.) What's your predictions and which headgear will Lee wear today?

Kirk: Ohio State has an incredible HB. What else is new? OSU sophomore HB Mike Tellis. Remember his name. Tellis is incredibly fast and has ridiculous moves. The Buckeyes have a good junior QB in Anthony Heffner who will be able to get the ball out to his fantastic receivers. I think in this stadium, USC has no chance coming all the way out here this early. (Crowd cheers.)

Lee: Ohio State destroyed USC last time in the Sugar Bowl. (Crowd cheers.) The Trojans were absolutely humiliated! (Crowd cheers more.) Embarrassed! (Crowd continues to cheer yet even more.) Not so fast! This is a new season. USC has the Heisman hopeful QB Aaron Corp and an amazing offensive line. I'll take Corp over Heffner any day. (Crowd boos.) Give me that. (Lee puts on the Trojan helmet and waves the sword in the air giving the victory sign with his other hand, humming the Trojan fight song as the crowd erupts in boos.) Go Trojans! Go USC!

Oregon State (0-0) at UNLV (0-1)

Las Vegas, NV - The Beavers kicked off the season under a hot sun today against the UNLV Running Rebels. The Beavers still remember the nightmares from last season against Mountain West teams so it probably would not take OSU head coach Mike Riley much effort to prepare his team for this game. Not to mention the history of the Beavers playing bad in non-conference road games but this would likely be a game that Oregon State should be able to win.

The Oregon State defense struggled on UNLV's opening drive as the Rebels kept converting on third down. Finally, the Beavers held in the red zone where the Rebels attempted a 32-yard field goal but it was kicked wide right. The OSU offense was looking pretty good, getting in rythm with a methodical drive. That was until OSU QB Bryan Rossner tried to escape pressure but was sacked by UNLV CB Will Chandler and the the ball came loose. UNLV MLB#59 alertly scooped up the ball and took all the way back for the first touchdown of the game to put UNLV on top 7-0.

UNLV MLB#59 scoops up the fumble and takes it back for a touchdown.

The Beavers looked like they were falling into another trap game in the Mountain West. OSU would need to score quickly to get the momentum on their side and that is exactly what they did when Rossner found a wide open HB Jacquizz Rodgers who made the catch, juked by two defender, ran down the field, slipped out of a tackle inside the five-yard line, and was in for a 61-yard touchdown reception to tie the game 7-7.

OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers with a 61-yard touchdown reception. (I need to change his number.)

Video-OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers 61-yard touchdown reception

As the game moved into the second quarter, Rossner would throw a pass to WR James Rodgers but the two did not seem to be on the same page as Rodgers went one way and the ball went another. The ball would fall in the hands of impact player UNLV CB Will Chandler who would take it all the way back for a pick-six to put UNLV back on top 14-7.

UNLV CB Will Chandler with a pick-six.

Matters would get worse for the Beavers when Rossner went down with what was later determined to be a bruised sternum that sidelined him for the rest of the game. That would leave QB Ryan Katz as the starting QB for the rest of the game. Katz would lead OSU to a 40-yard field goal to make it 14-10 UNLV. An interception by OSU CB Mike Mayes would allow the Beavers to get into the red zone in the last minute but Oregon State failed to punch it in, settling for a last second 20-yard field goal to make it a 14-13 UNLV lead at halftime.

On the Oregon State's opening drive of the third quarter, on third down Katz would hit WR Brian Herring on a deep crossing route but the ball went right through his hands, forcing a punt. However, the Beaver defense would make a big play when CB David Ross picked off UNLV QB Mike Clausen, and take it back for a pick-six to put the Beavers ahead 21-14 as Quinn was able to score on the 2-point conversion.

OSU CB David Ross come up with a pick-six to put the Beavers ahead.

As the game moved into the fourth quarter, the Beavers again stalled in the red zone and were forced to a 19-yard chip shot to put Oregon State up 24-14. The Beavers continued to play good defense but UNLV was got a bit of luck when UNLV QB Mike Clausen threw to a receiver where OSU CB David Ross deflected it but UNLV HB C.J. Cox came down with the deflection and took it to the house for a 57-yard touchdown reception to make it only a three-point game as UNLV was only down 24-21.

UNLV HB C.J. Cox comes down with the deflection, and takes it to the house for a 57-yard touchdown.

However, OSU QB Ryan Katz was filling nicely for the injured Rossner as HB Marvin Quinn finished off the drive with an impressive run to the outside, where he got by a defender and was in for a 17-yard touchdown run to OSU up 31-21.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn gets by a defender for a 17-yard touchdown run.

Then UNLV QB Mike Clausen would put this one away for Oregon State when he threw another interception to OSU CB David Ross, which Ross took back for his second pick-six of the game to make it 38-21 OSU.

OSU CB David Ross with another pick-six.

As the Beavers were just trying to close the game out, HB Marvin Quinn took a simple off tackle run, made a move inside, then cut back outside, and sped to the sideline, where UNLV CB Will Chandler made a weak attempt at a tackle. Quinn easily broke through the tackle and was off to the house on the 53-yard touchdown run to put this one away for Oregon State 45-21.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn breaks loose for a 53-yard touchdown run in the last few minutes of the game.

                Week 2

(5)USC pulls ahead late to beat (2)Ohio State 58-24

USC QB Aaron Corp will be on everybody's short list for Heisman after throwing for 271 yards and five touchdowns.
Corp also had a rushing touchdown and did not throw a single interception. The game was actually pretty close and
exciting until late in the third quarter when OSU QB Anthony Heffner could not stop throwing interceptions. Heffner
would finish with six interceptions, including losing a fumble on an option pitch.

                  Game of the Week
                  #14 Tennessee (1-0) at #1 Florida (1-0)

Chris: Welcome to Gainesville where we've got an early SEC game as the top ranked Florida Gators host the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers. The Gators cruised through last season all the way to the BCS championship where they had no problem beating an overmatched Wisconsin team. Now, this is a much different Gator team. Gone are Brantley, Rainey, Thompson, and many of those defenders are now playing on Sundays. So we'll get a good idea of where the Gators stand after this one today. We've also got some other big games this Saturday. First up is one of the big rivalries in college football. No. 8 Notre Dame meets an emerging No. 23 Michigan in Ann Arbor. Michigan is trying to get back in the national picture. How will this one play out guys?

Kirk: I really like the Irish in this one. Notre Dame will be going up against an improved Michigan team but the Wolverines aren't ready to win a game like this yet.

Lee: That Grey-Olsen tandem at HB that Notre Dame has is fantastic. They run all over the Wolverines today and will win this one but it's going to be closer than the experts think.

Chris: Alright we turn to the ACC for the next game. Miami was unable to pull off the upset over Oklahoma and now they get another top 25 team in No. 19 Clemson who will be coming into Miami. Will Miami be able to get this one or are they going to get off to an 0-2 start?

Kirk: I just don't see how the 'Canes can win this one. Miami did not show me anything that tells me they're ready to take it to the next level. Clemson wins this one.

Lee: I know I wasn't high on the 'Canes last week but that was because they were playing Oklahoma. Clemson is not Oklahoma and Miami will have they're coming out party today, winning a close one.

Chris: Another ACC team with a coach that has ties to Miami, No. 16 North Carolina will be going into Lincoln to play the No. 5 Cornhuskers. Can Butch Davis get a signature win and propel his team into the big time with a win today?

Kirk: I just don't see it Chris. The Tarheels just don't have the athletes to play against a prolific offense that Nebraska has proven to have the last few seasons. Nebraska wins big in Lincoln.

Lee: I think you're underestimating the Tarheels but you're right Nebraska will win but closer than the experts think.

Chris: Well, that leaves the big one we have here. (Crowd cheers.) Can the Vols pull off the upset? (Crowd boos.)

Kirk: Florida QB Kyler Thomas will announce to the world who he is today with a breakout game on the national stage and that Gator defense will be the difference in a close grudge match. (Crowd cheers.)

Lee: Florida has lost so much talent. This is not the same Gator team we saw last season and Tennessee is better than the experts think they are. That is why I'm going with...(Lee pulls out the Smokey headgear as the crowd starts booing.) Huh. You like that!? Ehhh...Forget about it! (Lee throws the Smokey headgear back under the table and gets out the Gator headgear and puts it on, doing the Gator chomp.) Go Gators!

                      Game of the Week
                      #3 Oklahoma (1-0) at #9 Ohio State (1-1)

Chris: Welcome back to Columbus where we have an awesome face off between two of the most consistently good teams in college football in recent years. Oklahoma and Ohio State. These teams continue their murderous schedule. Despite Ohio State getting blown out by USC earlier this season, the Buckeyes are very much in the hunt still. Though that could be brought to an end if they lose to the Sooners today. (Crowd boos.) Oklahoma looked great against a very good Miami team two weeks ago and is poised to stay in the championship hunt. Can the Sooners pull this one off in the Horseshoe like USC? (Crowd boos.)

Kirk: No. Of course they can't. (Crowd cheers.) Let's not forget that the game against USC was close into the third quarter. OSU QB Anthony Heffner will put that game behind him and lead his team to a huge victory today. And with the help of a fantastic HB in sophomore Mike Tellis, the Buckeyes win this one in a very close defensive game.

Lee: Heffner and Tellis are a great duo. And don't forget about those receivers too. They're good too, boy. But it is the Buckeyes' defense that really makes them an elite team. Ehhh...forget about it! Tellis is a terriffic running back but he won't have anywhere to go. The Sooners will force Heffner to beat them and that will lead to turnovers. Good night sweetheart. Don't forget about Oklahoma. They have a senior QB Landry Jones that is very good and has maybe the best receiving corps in the nation. This will be a very close game and with that Sooner offensive line wearing away at a great Buckeye defense, I see the Sooners pounding away to a huge victory. Where's my headgear? I have to wear this...ehhh...(Lee pulls out a Schooner hat and puts it on.) Go Sooners! Boomer Sooner! (Crowd boos hysterically.)

                        Rice (1-1) at #23 Oregon State (1-0)

Corvallis, OR - The Beavers now find themselves in unfamiliar territory as Oregon State has moved into the Top 25, ranked No. 23. If the Beavers want to stay in the polls, then they would have to keep winning. A home game versus Rice would appear to be an easy win for Oregon State but the Beavers would not be taking this game for granted given OSU's recent history against non-conference teams. Though there was an aura of confidence after the Beavers had achieved a non-conference win on the road. Even if it was against UNLV.

The OSU defense held strong on the opening possession for Rice as the Owls punted after a three-and-out. It would take only two plays for the Beavers to get into the endzone as HB Marvin Quinn broke off a 26-yard run. Then QB Bryan Rossner hit a wide open WR Brian Herring, who made a spin move and ran in for a 31-yard touchdown reception to put OSU on top 7-0 just like that.

OSU WR Brian Herring scores on a 31-yard touchdown reception.

On the ensuing possession, Rice QB Brandon Brothers would not help his team when he challenged OSU CB David Ross, who made the interception, and took it back for a pick-six to put Oregon State ahead 14-0 in no time.

OSU CB David Ross with another pick-six on the season.

Later in the quarter, Rossner would throw to Quinn, who juked by one defender, then ran through another tackle, sped downfield, where he was pushed out just as he crossed the goal-line for a 33-yard touchdown reception. Oregon State was already up 21-0

OSU HB Marvin Quinn is pushed out just as he crosses the goal-line for a 33-yard touchdown reception.

As the second quarter opened, the Beavers finally were stopped to a 50-yard field goal which was kicked just short of the crossbar. However, on OSU's next possession, Rossner threw to an open WR James Rodgers. Rodgers had beaten the man-coverage, made the catch and took it to the house for a 78-yard touchdown. The rout was on as the Beavers were now up 28-0.

OSU WR James Rodgers takes a pass from QB Bryan Rossner 78 yards to the house.

Later, Rossner, on a playaction to Quinn, threw deep downfield to WR Brian Herring in single coverage. Herring jumped up and made the catch at the apex over the CB, and housed it for a 41-yard touchdown catch to extend OSU's lead to 35-0 going into halftime.

OSU WR Brian Herring catches the ball over the defender, and takes it in for his second touchdown.

If anybody thought there might be a let up in the second half, they were sadly mistaken when OSU HB Marvin Quinn ran up the gut. Quinn ran right through the Rice defense, side-stepping through the defense, found open field, and housed it for a 55-yard touchdown as OSU was now up 42-0.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn runs right through the Rice defense for a 55-yard touchdown.

On the next OSU possession, Rossner would finish off a methodical drive when he threw a strike to slot WR Marcus Sullivan on a slant for a 15-yard touchdown. It was Rossner's fifth touchdown pass of the game and put OSU up 49-0.

OSU QB Bryan Rossner with his fifth touchdown pass as he throws a strike to WR Marcus Sullivan.

As the third quarter was just about to come to an end, Rossner would throw a single game, team-record, sixth touchdown pass when he hit Sullivan again on a slant. Sullivan juked by a defender and housed it for a 56-yard touchdown to extend the OSU lead to 56-0.

OSU WR Marcus Sullivan jukes by a defender and takes it to the house for his second touchdown reception.

The fourth quarter saw all of the Beavers' backups playing the rest of the game as this one was over. It was actually over when WR Brian Herring scored the first touchdown of the game since the OSU defense did not give up anything to Rice as the Beavers would finish off the shutout 56-0. The competition will move up considerably next week as former OSU head coach, Dennis Erickson's Arizona State Sun Devils will be in Corvallis next weekend.

Oklahoma which sealed the Sooners' fate. OSU DB Taylor Rice also had a huge game as he had three
interceptions and scored two touchdowns. The Buckeye defense actually scored three touchdowns.

                            #6 Ohio State (2-1) at #19 Indiana (2-0)

Chris: Well, there is an interesting game out west taking place in Corvallis today between Oregon State and their former coach Dennis Erickson's Sun Devils. Both teams come into the game unblemished and ASU was able to get by Georgia again for the second time in a row. The Beavers have looked really good in their opening games. This could be good for a team that usually has fantastic finishes. The Beavs have moved into the Top 25 but do they stay in the polls after today?

Kirk: I think they will. The Beavers are playing so well thus far. I know...I know they've only played UNLV and Rice but the way they took care of business was impressive. I think that OSU HB Marvin Quinn could have a big game running against a weak defensive line.

Lee: Yep. I agree with you Kirk. Oregon State has looked fantastic on defense. They allowed zero points last week against Rice. That's right sweetheart. A shutout. ASU QB Steve Stratton better not throw in OSU CB David Ross's direction. The kid already has three interception returns for touchdowns. OSU QB Bryan Rossner will also have a good game today against a weak secondary. Oregon State wins by ten points.

Chris: Alright. When we come back we'll have some more predictions for today's games of the week.

                            Other Predictions

                            #22 Auburn at #20 Tennessee
                            Kirk: Tennessee Lee: Auburn

Chris: Welcome back to Bloomington where the Indiana Hoosiers face the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes are coming off of a huge victory over Oklahoma last week. They will look to carry that momentum against an emerging Hoosier team. Can Indiana pull off a monumental upset?

Kirk: I'm sorry Hoosier fans. (Crowd boos.) But there is no way that Indiana beats Ohio State today. The Buckeyes just beat a contender for the national title in Oklahoma. OSU HB Mike Tellis rushed for three touchdowns in the first quarter against the Sooners. If it wasn't for his injury in the second quarter, there is no telling what Tellis would have done. The Buckeyes are just too explosive on offense and that defense is scary for opponents to play against. Buckeyes blow out the Hoosiers today. (Crowd really boos.)

Lee: You're right Kirk. Indiana stands no chance today. (Crowd boos even more.) The Buckeyes are just better. There's no doubt about that. But Indiana has something for this game that the Buckeyes will lack today. And that is heart. Indiana wants to win this game on the national stage more than anything and that effort will lead them to a monumental upset in the Big Ten. (Lee puts on an Indiana helmet as the crowd cheers him on.) Go Hoosiers!

Arizona State (2-0) at #21 Oregon State (2-0)

Corvallis, OR - This is easily one of the biggest games for Oregon State in a while. ABC decided to broadcast the game to a national audience as the Beavers hosted their former head coach Dennis Erickson's Arizona State Sun Devils. ASU came in with their own momentum after getting by Georgia for the second year in a row. It would be an opportunity to show the nation that the Beavers are for real with a win over a quality Pac-10 team.

The Beaver defense looked good as advertised as Erickson decided to go for it on 4th and 2 at the OSU 33-yard line. The OSU defense came up with a huge stop as Reser Stadium erupted. The ensuing possession for Oregon State saw the Beavers march down the field methodically. Finally on 3rd and goal from the ASU 4-yard line, OSU QB Bryan Rossner threw a laser, hooking up with WR James Rodgers in the endzone to put the Beavers on top 7-0.

It would get worse for ASU when QB Steve Stratton threw an interception to OSU CB David Ross who is really making a name for himself this year. However, as the game moved into the second quarter, the Beavers were forced to punt. Arizona State was able to finally counter back when Stratton threw to WR A.J. Pickens where OSU CB David Ross was unable to bring him down. Pickens proceeded downfield where OLB Carlos Matthews missed on an impressive move by Pickens. Then Pickens would spin out of a tackle by CB Mike Mayes and house it for a 39-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7.

ASU WR A.J. Pickens gets by three defenders for a 39-yard touchdown reception.

The momentum now seemed to be in favor of the Sun Devils as the Beavers were forced to punt after a three-and-out. Arizona State looked to take advantage as Stratton would throw deep downfield to WR T.J. Simpson where OSU FS Matt Arnold went for the pick but came up empty as Simpson made the catch and raced downfield. Arnold was able to catch up and make a shoe lace tackle inside the 5-yard line as it was a 79-yard gain for ASU. The play would set up a 1-yard touchdown run as HB Paul Jenkins leaped into the endzone to put ASU ahead 14-7.

OSU FS Matt Arnold comes up empty as ASU WR T.J. Simpson gets a 79-yard gain.

It would get even better for the Sun Devils as OSU QB Bryan Rossner threw deep over the middle to WR Marcus Sullivan but ASU OLB Brandon Magee was in coverage and made a tremendous leaping interception. However, the Sun Devils did not take advantage of the opportunity as OSU held them to a three-and-out. The Beavers would finally get something going on offense and Rossner would find WR Marcus Sullivan near the sideline where he was able to make a defender miss and take it to the house for a 32-yard touchdown to tie the game back up 14-14.

OSU WR Marcus Sullivan with a 32-yard touchdown reception to tie the game.

The Beavers would get the ball back with only :12 left in the half. OSU HB Marvin Quinn took the handoff, bounced outside where he was somehow able to escape a tackle in the backfield, made his way to the sideline, and zig-zagged his way Tecmo Bowl style for an amazing 80-yard touchdown run just as the second half came to an end. It was the longest rush in Oregon State history and it put the Beavers ahead 21-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the pace of the game really slowed as the ball was punted back and forth. Finally, when the Beavers made it into the red zone, they were able to get something as Rossner found Sullivan over the middle on a slant. Sullivan brushed off a tackle and crossed the goal-line for an 8-yard touchdown to put Oregon State up 28-14.

OSU WR Marcus Sullivan with another touchdown reception.

The OSU touchdown would be followed by an ASU punt. As the fourth quarter opened, OSU HB Marvin Quinn broke off a 31-yard run. The play would set up a 43-yard field goal to put Oregon State up 31-14. The Beavers' defense continued to pour it on as OSU DE Kevin Frahm would get the hat trick, three sacks on Stratton. The third one would knock Stratton out of the game with a bruised elbow.

ASU QB Steve Stratton is unable to get away from OSU DE Kevin Frahm for the third time.

Despite the injury, ASU was able to score off of a 50-yard field goal to make it 31-17 OSU. Also, Oregon State would respond with an unimpressive three-and-out. ASU QB Jack Elway came in for the injured Stratton and looked sharp as he was able to lead his team to the OSU 14-yard line. With only 1:50 left it came down to 4th and six. Elway threw a screen pass to HB Ryan Bass who was able to get the first down, made his way to the goal-line but lost control of the ball as he tried to dive. Though ASU recovered right in front of the goal-line. It led to a touchdown run by HB Philip Thorne as he was just able to get the ball across the plane to make it a one-score lead for Oregon State as it was now only 31-24 OSU.

ASU HB Philip Thorne crosses the goal-line on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Arizona State would attempt the onside kick but Oregon State recover. However, ASU had all of their timeouts. It would come down to a 3rd and 4 where Rossner playfaked to Quinn, rolled out, but the play was blown up at the line as Rossner was drilled, losing control of the ball. ASU MLB Shelly Lyons scooped up the ball, trying to score, but OSU C Eric Reese alertly made the tackle. Though Arizona State still had the ball inside OSU territory with plenty of time as there was 1:16 left. Elway would lead his team to the OSU 8-yard line with :31 remaining. With only :12 left in the game, Elway ran an option, took it in himself for a 1-yard touchdown to tie the gam 31-31. It was going to overtime as the Beavers had given up 17 unanswered points.

Arizona State would take the first possession and score quickly as HB Ryan Bass was in on a 2-yard touchdown to put ASU ahead 38-31. Oregon State was able to respond with a Quinn 2-yard touchdown to tie it up 38-38 to send it into double overtime.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn would make a beautiful cutback to score on an 8-yard touchdown to give Oregon State the lead 45-38.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn cuts back to get in for an 8-yard touchdown.

All the Beavers had to do was keep the Sun Devils out of the endzone. Easier said than done as Elway hooked up with TE Antwaun Roberson at the sideline of the endzone to tie it up 45-45. The game would move to triple overtime.

The OSU defense held strong, stuffing runs by ASU HB Ryan Bass. Arizona State was forced to kick a field goal as Reser Stadium was now going crazy. The kick was up but it was wide right so no good. All the Beavers needed to do was score and the game would be theirs. OSU head coach Mike Riley was not going to be conservative and put it in the hands of his kicker. Quinn ran physically, finally getting the Beavers inside the 5-yard line. OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers was stuffed. FB Ryan McCants was stopped just short of the goal-line. On 3rd down, Quinn got the toss, found a hole, sped through and was in for the game-winning touchdown as the crowd went beserk. The Beavers rushed the field into a dogpile as Oregon State won an instant classic 51-45 in triple overtime.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn is in for the game-winning touchdown.
