#7 USC (7-0) at #6 Oregon State (7-0)
Corvallis, OR - There was an electric atmosphere at Reser Stadium for the biggest game of the year. USC was looking to pay back Oregon State for the loss that the Beavers gave them last year mostly behind the running of HB Roy Nolen. That win propelled the Beavers to making the Rose Bowl. But now ranked 6th in the nation, the Beavers are starting to think bigger. A win by either team today, gives them a realistic chance at competing for a national title birth.
It was a chilly 38 degree evening in Corvallis at kickoff. USC took the field first on offense and was met by the hostile crowd. The Trojans were able to quiet Reser temporarily when QB Mark Nelson threw a first down pass to move the chains, but the drive did not go anywhere afterwards. USC was quickly forced to punt. But the Oregon State offense looked even worse, going three-and-out, barely moving the ball at all. It looked like it was going to be a hard fought game between these two. Then QB Mark Nelson, under serious pressure from OSU DE Brandon Webb, threw an ill-advised pass that CB John Biggers picked off and took back to the house to put OSU on top 7-0 as Reser Stadium erupted.

The Trojans were again met by a loud crowd, but USC was able to calm the crowd down with a very long drive. The OSU defense would finally stop the Trojans inside the OSU 5-yard line. As a result, USC was forced to kick a 23-yard field goal but the kick went wide right. Oregon State now had all of the momentum. Then HB Tim Taylor bounced a run to the outside for what looked like a 1st down run until he was drilled by a USC CB, which caused the ball to fall to the turf for a USC recovery.
OSU HB Tim Taylor fumbles the ball to the Trojans.
But the Trojans could not take advantage of the turnover as QB Mark Nelson was sacked on 3rd down by junior DT Steve Brooks to force another USC three-and-out as the 1st quarter came to an end.
On the Beavers' ensuing possession, QB Justin Rust found WR Brian Horn on a curl. Horn spun past a USC defensive back, and was able to take it in for a 29-yard touchdown reception, putting Oregon State up 14-0.

When the Trojan offense got back on the field, Reser was rocking. USC could not get anything going and was forced to punt again. The Beavers seemed like they could do no wrong. That was until QB Justin Rust, under pressure threw a terrible pass into coverage which was easily intercepted by USC FS Eric Cooper. Again though, USC could not take advantage of the turnover as QB Mark Nelson threw a pass over the middle that was picked off by OSU FS Corey Swan, in for the injured FS Scott Vinson. Speaking of injuries, Oregon State had two minor injuries occur on their next possession as HB Tim Taylor took a vicious hit low that caused the standout tailback to leave the field. It was later reported that Taylor would miss the rest of the game with a foot stress fracture. At about the time that it was reported that Taylor would likely miss the rest of the game, Rust went down after throwing a late pass. In came red shirt freshman QB Ty Moore. Despite the injuries, the drive continued on where backup HB Derrick Andrews was able to fight his way across the goal line from four yards out to put the Beavers ahead 21-0 at the end of the half.

To start the 2nd half, Rust was in the huddle calling plays. The Beavers faced a 3rd-and-long where Rust was able to connect with WR Bill Faaeteete on a comeback right at the magical yellow line for a first down. Then Rust threw a prayer up deep that Faaeteete was able to somehow come down with for a 41-yard gain.
OSU WR Bill Faaeteete makes a spectacular leaping catch in coverage for a 41-yard gain, bailing out QB Justin Rust.
The Beavers, now with good field position in USC territory were able to get into the red zone, where Rust on a playaction threw to TE Adam Banks on an out pattern at the goal line. The strike hit Banks right in the hands for a 7-yard touchdown pass to put OSU up 28-0.

The Trojans continued to struggle on offense, going three-and-out again. Their main problem was that they could not run the ball to save their lives. The Beavers on the other hand were putting on an offensive clinic, moving the ball almost at will and taking up a lot of time while doing it. Finally, the fantastic drive ended when QB Justin Rust threw to WR Bill Faaeteete at the goal line. Faaeteete was hit as he caught it but fell forward into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown to put Oregon State comfortably in front 35-0.

Heading into the 4th quarter it was apparent that Oregon State was going to run away with a huge win. The only question left was whether the Beavers could preserve the shut out. The Trojans would get into field goal position but Pete Carroll was not interested in three points so they went for it on 4th-and-short where Nelson threw a pass over the top but CB John Biggers was there with a few of his other buddies to knock the ball down. Later, the Beavers would actually have a drive stall, and tacked on a 51-yard field goal by Reggie Smith to put OSU further ahead 38-0.
With under two minutes to go, it looked like the Trojans were about to get on the scoreboard but with 1:47 left, Nelson threw a pass up into coverage where OSU CB John Biggers got his 2nd interception off of a deflection. The Beavers not only absolutely crushed the Trojans but also were able to shut them out in dominating fashion.
After the game, Mike Riley was available for comment, "This is such a huge win for the Beavers and this town, and for Oregon, and for the Pac-10! I'm just so proud of these kids. We knew we could beat these guys but never would I have thought we could do it in this fashion. I also want to thank our fans. They were a big part of our success today."
Later, Pete Carroll was available for comment, "I don't know what to say. This has to be the most embarrassing loss I can remember since I've been coaching at USC. I don't really know what else I can say. We just really got beat in every way. I have to give the Beavers all the credit in the world. They played a heck of a game today."

Week 10
(4)Ohio State Takes Down Unbeaten (2)Penn State 26-20
OSU CB James Babineaux's 2nd interception of the game in the end zone prevents a possible PSU comeback.
Columbus, OH - The showdown in the Big Ten between undefeated Penn State and Ohio State lived up to the billing right from the opening kickoff. This was a hard hitting football games as both teams kicked up the intensity. Ohio State took the lead early when QB Avery Vincent found TE Stanley Smith in the flat for a 5-yard touchdown to go up 7-0.
But in the 2nd quarter the Nittany Lions would first get on the scoreboard off of a 42-yard field goal. Later, PSU QB Greg Medlock hooked up with WR Jeremy Murphy on a deep pass where he was able to elude superstar OSU FS Derrick Parker and housing it for a 58-yard touchdown reception to put Penn State on top 10-7. However the Lion's lead would not last long as Ohio State tied the game with a 47-yard field goal. Then later OSU QB Avery Vincent would throw deep to WR Brian Butler. The ball was almost intercepted but somehow ended up in Butler's hands which he took in for six on a 42-yard touchdown reception to put Ohio State back on top 17-10. A last second drive for Penn State would come up short, inside the OSU 5-yard line. As a result, PSU settled for a field goal to make it 17-13 OSU at halftime.
Ohio State came out of the break with a long drive mainly behind the running of HB Eric Brewer who was doing some tough running inside. But the Lions would hold in the red zone, leading to a 26-yard OSU field goal to make it 20-13 Buckeyes. But the Buckeye defense continued to give Penn State's offense trouble. On the ensuing Ohio State possession, QB Avery Vincent thew a ball up where WR Brian Butler made a spectacular leaping catch, holding onto the ball despite being taken from underneath, upended to ground for a 23-yard gain to keep a drive alive. OSU HB Eric Brewer, taking punishing hit after another, finally succumbed to a strained pectoral. And the OSU drive stalled but the Buckeyes tacked on another field goal of 41 yards to go up 23-13.
Penn State looked like they would finally have a chance to get back in the game when QB Greg Medlock hooked up with TE Aaron Miller downfield. Miller was able to spin out of a tackle, took off but was tackled just short of the goal line on a 39-yard gain. But Medlock would threw into the end zone where it was intercepted by OSU CB James Babineaux. But Penn State would quickly get the ball back where HB Stewart Mack was able to power in a 6-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 23-20 with 2:34 left. However, PSU was unable to stop OSU from moving the chains and the Buckeyes tacked on another field goal of 47 yards to go up 26-20 with only :13 left. PSU QB Greg Medlock would throw up a prayer but it was knocked down and Ohio State becomes the lone undefeated team in the Big Ten.

MLB AJ Morton 5* #1 (2nd)
Daleville, AL
Committed: Oregon State
DE Stephen Thompson 5* #1 (15th)
State College, PA
Committed: Oregon State
The Beavers added two more five-star recruits to their commitment list. A list which now includes the top two prospects of this year's class. MLB AJ Morton from Daleville, Alabama, one of the five-star prospects and rated the 2nd best player in the nation, has a great awareness of where the ball is going and takes great pursuit angles to get to where he needs to go. The other five-star prospect, DE Stephen Thompson from State College, Pennsylvania will make a great book end to pressure the passing game. He has good speed but his ability to stop the run remains suspect. With these two coming in, the Beavers' defense looks to be in good shape for the near future. The surprising thing is that these guys are coming from Alabama and Pennsylvania, State College no less. Not the traditional California talent that has been making up the majority of the Beavers' roster.
In addition to the five-star recruits, Oregon State also landed three 4-star prospects. The coaching staff is really high on QB Todd Jones from Hesperia, California. Rated the 9th best QB in the country, Jones has a cannon of an arm and looks to have a head on his shoulders to master the playbook. Do not be surprised if Jones gets the nod to start next season over Ty Moore, but it will likely be an open competition between those two. Mike Riley has liked what he has seen from Moore in limited action. Also, Oregon State brings in 4-star OLB John Hicks from Aransas, Texas, who will the Beavers more athleticism at the position. On top of acquiring junior college transfer HB John Johnson from Modesto, California who is known for running over defenders rather than trying to go around them. Johnson could easily compete for the starting job with HB Derrick Andrews next season.
Oregon State Commitments
QB Todd Jones 4*: Hesperia, CA #9 (88th)
HB John Johnson (JUCO) 4*: Modesto, CA #10 (84th)
WR Bryan Mitchell 5*: East Hill-Meridian, WA #1 (1st)
DE Stephen Thompson 5*: State College, PA #1 (15th)
MLB AJ Morton 5*: Daleville, AL #1 (2nd)
OLB John Hicks 4*: Aranas Pass, TX #3 (57th)

Game of the Week
#4 Clemson (9-0) at #10 Florida State (7-1)
Chris: We are here in Tallahassee for an important ACC rivalry game between Clemson (crowd boos) and Florida State (crowd cheers). You could make a case that there has not been any team more dominant over the last few years than the Clemson Tigers and here they are, still undefeated, trying to claw their way in for another chance at a national title. But in their way are the Seminoles of Florida State whose only loss came at the hands of Virginia Tech on a last second field goal. The Noles are probably out of the title race but are still playing to get into the conference championship and a BCS bowl.
Games of the Week
#15 Nebraska at #6 Oklahoma
Kirk: OU Lee: Neb
#21 Alabama at #19 LSU
Kirk: Bama Lee: LSU
Chris: Man, the SEC has really beat up on each other this season. Look how far Tennessee has fallen so quickly. Alright, time for the picks for this one here guys.
Kirk: Clemson is really an anomoly to me. I mean they are a good team with a good coach, but I look at the Tigers and I look at the Seminoles. Florida State looks like the better team but this young Clemson team just seems to be on a mission to win football games no matter how they have to do it. And I think it all comes from their sophomore WR Patrick Rackley (79 ovr, 97 jmp) who at first glance does not look like anything special. But he has the heart of a champion. He's already scored 13 touchdowns and has over 700 receiving yards. The talent that makes him unique is his ability to jump up and make the big catch. That is why he has become the leading Heisman frontrunner. If he can do it against Florida State today, he can do it against anybody. I'm taking the Tigers. (crowd boos)
Lee: You didn't even mention their MLB Ryan Williams (99 ovr) who is just an absolute beast in the middle who can fly around the field. He makes what would be an average defense a good one. So good in fact that Clemson is 2nd in rush defense only behind Florida State who is 1st. The Tigers have continued their success even in what was considered a rebuilding year but now they face one of the most talented teams in college football. It all starts with that defense for the Noles with FS Donovan Stewart (97 ovr) and MLB Andy Gunn (95 ovr). I don't expect to see too much scoring today, plus I hear that a storm is heading this way. I expect to see a lot of turnovers and this will be a very, very close game. Alright here I go...(Lee puts on the Seminole headdress as he does the warchant with the crowd)
