Romo started the 3rd game. Wasn't intentional on my part. I had set the Giants to have a 4 man rotation. Bumgarner was 3rd in the rotation, but the AI elected to insert a reliever into the rotation.

Woulda thought they'd put Hensley in since he has the most stamina, but they went with Romo. Meh.

Trevor Cahill is set to make his D'Backs debut.

        D'Backs Looking to Bounce Back

San Diego (AP) - After what can only be described as a total wash in the opening series which saw the Diamondbacks completely shut down by the stellar Giants pitching staff, the team sets off on a 6 game road trip with the first stop in San Diego. Petco is not really the most pleasant place in the world to play when you're looking to get your bats on track, however, the ensuing trip to Coors Field is just that.

The D'Backs will be without catcher Miguel Montero for at least the first game of the series. He's listed as day to day with an injury that forced him to leave the previous game against the Giants after he was hit in the shoulder by a pitch. As he's day-to-day he hasn't been placed on the DL. However, to make sure a backup catcher is available, The team has optioned Geoff Blum to AAA, and recalled catcher Robby Hammock until Montero is ready to return.

In other injury related news, Takashi Saito and Stephen Drew have been participating in XST, and both are nearing rehab assignments, with an eye toward being ready for May 1st.

        Probable Pitchers

        April 10th, 2012 7:05

        Arizona: Trevor Cahill (2011: 12-14 4.16 ERA)
San Diego: Anthony Bass (2011: 2-0 1.68 ERA)

Cahill makes his much anticipated Diamondbacks debut after being acquired in the offseason from the Athletics. The sinkerballer is hoping to return to his top 5 Cy Young caliber form of 2010 and needs to regain command to do so.

Bass is set to make just his 4th major league start. He appeared in 27 games for the Padres last year, starting 3. He struggled quite a bit with control, walking 21, and also allowed 41 hits in 48 IP for a total WHIP of 1.68. He was certainly fortunate to post a 1.68 ERA. The D'Backs need to jump on him to get some confidence back.

        April 11th, 2012 3:35

        Arizona: Joe Saunders (2011: 12-13 3.69 ERA)
San Diego: Edinson Volquez (0-0 0.00 ERA 7 Ks)

This matchup features a crafty veteran lefty in Joe Saunders versus a hard throwing right hander in Edinson Volquez. Volquez, very much a fly ball pitcher, has to be loving the move to Petco where he can get away with it. He struggles with command, but the spacious ballpark and his ability to strike people out should lead him to have a career type year.

Saunders, like Volquez, is prone to giving up a lot of fly balls. However, unlike Volquez, he's not a strike out pitcher, but rather a pitch to contact type of guy.

        April 12th, 2012 7:05

Arizona: Ian Kennedy (0-1 10.80 ERA)
San Diego: Cory Luebke (1-0 0.00 ERA)

Ian Kennedy had a very rough first inning in his opening day start and was never able to recover from it, giving up 6 runs total. The Cy Young candidate is looking to get back on track against a very impotent Padres lineup.

Cory Luebke emerged last year as the Padres best pitcher, and hopes to continue where he left off. He looked strong in his first outing, not allowing a run and striking out 4, while walking 2. The lefty proved to be quite the strikeout artist last year, whiffing 154 in 139 IP, while walking just 44.

Upton provided all of the offense in the D'Backs first win

D'Backs Look to Start a Run?

Denver (AP) -- Or perhaps, just scoring some runs would be nice. After 6 games, Arizona's offense has come out of the box sputtering against two of the better bitching staffs in baseball. The team's .219 average is good for 29th in the league, ahead of just the Pirates .199, and 12 runs scored is indeed tied for last. The pitching has been better, with a team ERA of 3.54, placing them 12th in the league.

Two things change for the upcoming series against the Rockies, the D'Backs pitching staff will see their first competent offense of the season, while their bats will finally get a rest from very good pitching in the Rockies rather pedestrian staff overall. If there's ever been a time to get the bats going, it's now.

                    Probable Pitchers

                    April 13th, 2012 6:40

Arizona: Daniel Hudson (0-0 2.57 ERA)
Colorado: Jhoulys Chacin (1-0 2.25 ERA)

Hudson picked up a no decision in what should have been the D'Backs first win of the year in the second game of the season. Putz wound up blowing the save in that one, and Shaw eventually wound up with the loss. Hudson is 1-2 lifetime in 5 starts against Colorado with a 4.20 ERA, including 0-1 in 2 starts at Coors Field with a 8.38 ERA.

Chacin made light work of the Astros lineup in a 5-2 victory in his first start, going 8 strong, striking out 7. The 3rd year man is 3-2 against the D'Backs in 8 career appearances with a 2.76 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 41 IP.

                    April 14th, 2012 6:10

Arizona: Josh Collmenter (0-1, 5.14 ERA)
Colorado: Tyler Chatwood (0-0 2.57 ERA)

Collmenter gave what was expected of him in his season debut, going 7 innings, scattering 8 hits and allowing 4 runs, while walking 1. Many expect him to be just an average pitcher posting an ERA in the mid-4s, but he should eat innings, so if he can turn in that kind of performance consistently, the D'Backs won't be too unhappy. The 2nd year man made a total of 5 starts against the Rockies last season, going 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA.

Chatwood, in his first season with Colorado, went 7 in his Rockies debut against the Astros, allowing 2 runs while striking out 7. He wound up with a no decision in a game that the Rockies eventually won 4-2. He has not faced the Diamondbacks in his career.

                    April 15th, 2012 1:10

Arizona: Trevor Cahill (0-0 3.00 ERA)
Colorado: Juan Nicasio (1-0 7.50 ERA)

Cahill turned in a solid, yet unspectacular, start in his D'Backs debut in a game the D'Backs eventually lost against the Padres. He went 6, scattering 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4 while allowing just 2 runs. Ziegler eventually wound up on the losing end of that one.

Nicasio picked up the win in his season debut despite pitching poorly. The 2nd year man made one start against Arizona last season, getting roughed up for 6 runs in 2.2 IP, allowing 5 hits, and walking 6.

Putz has saved all 3 D'Backs victories

                              Home Sweet Home

Phoenix (AP) - After a fairly successful road trip that saw them put together a 3 game winning streak, and take 2 out of 3 from the Rockies, the D'Backs look forward to an extended 10 game homestand. That's good the news. The bad news is that the team does not have an off-day until the end of this homestand, so it's 16 straight for the boys from Phoenix. The team's depth will certainly be tested during this stretch.

Back to some more good news, the D'Backs open with a 3 game set against the Pirates. The Pirates, surprisingly, come into the game with a 4-5 record, and are currently 5th in ERA at 2.94, and 2nd in runs allowed, having allowed just 29. Offensively, they are the worst in the NL in terms of average at .223, and dead last in all of baseball with only 24 runs scored. The D'Backs are scheduled to face Karstens, Bedard, and Evan Meek in the 3 game set. Meek, not normally a starter, is a victim of my having set 4 man rotations on some teams for accurate 25 man rosters, and the AI has not yet called up an actual starter to fill the hole.

On the rehab front, Stephen Drew and Takashi Saito have been called up to the double AA Bay Bears to begin their rehab assignments. Drew will be in the lineup playing short and leading off. Saito will obviously be assigned to the bullpen. The plan is to play them in AA for a week, before moving them up to AAA and finally back into the bigs. The duo are expected to rejoin the team in Washington on May 1st.

                              Probable Pitchers

                              April 16th, 2012 6:40

ARI: Joe Saunders (0-1 4.50 ERA)
PIT: Jeff Karstens (1-0 1.13 ERA)

Saunders pitched well in his 2012 debut, turning in a quality start, going 5 giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. He was outdueled by Edinson Volquez, who allowed just 1 run in 7, as the D'Backs fell 3-1. Saunders has faced the Pirates just one time in his career, picking up a no decision in 6 IP, allowing 4 runs.

Karstens pitched well in his first start of the season against the Dodgers, working 8 strong, while scattering 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3. The crafty veteran won't strike many out, but will also make you earn our baserunners as he walked just 33 in 162 IP last season. Karstens has made 7 career appearances against Arizona, 3 coming as a starter. He's 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 28.1 IP.

                              April 17th, 2012

ARI: Ian Kennedy (0-1 5.73 ERA)
PIT: Erik Bedard (0-0 2.08 ERA)

Staff ace Ian Kennedy has struggled a bit with control out of the gate, walking 10 in his first two appearances. He was a bit more effective in his second appearance of the season, despite walking 6, he allowed just 1 run over 6 IP while striking out 6. Once he can settle his command down he should return to form. Kennedy has faced the Pirates twice in his career, with a 1-0 record and a 0.64 ERA, striking out 16 in 14.

Oft-injured Erik Bedard has continued to prove that when he's healthy he can be an effective pitcher. Problem is, he's never healthy anymore, and due to that he's often found being restricted in pitch count and innings. Despite this, he has pitched well in his first two starts for Pittsburgh. He was on the receiving end of a massive bullpen collapse in his first outing against the Pirates. After going 6 strong, allowing just 1 run, the Pirates bullpen gave up ELEVEN runs in the 7th to the Phillies. He did not fare much luckier in his second start either, turning in 7 innings of 2 run ball, but winding up with a no decision as the Pirates fell 4-2 in extras.

                              April 18th, 2012

ARI: Daniel Hudson (1-0 4.15 ERA)
PIT: Evan Meek (1-0 0.79 ERA)

Hudson picked up his first win of the year in the D'Backs 10-7 victory over the Rockies. He was fairly shaky in the outing, scattering 9 hits and walking 2 over 6 IP, while striking out 7.

Meek, normally a reliever, has made two starts this year for the Pirates.
