Drew will make his season debut against the Nationals

Reinforcements on the Way

Washington D.C. (AP) -- Well, the start to the 10 game road trip is definitely not what the D'Backs had in mind as they were swept by a red hot Miami Marlins pitching staff. The D'Backs lineup that had put up some fat offensive numbers in their recent homestand, all of a sudden found themselves scoring just 13 runs in the 4 game series, dropping from 11-8 to 11-12, while the Marlins were propelled to an NL-best 15-8. The Diamondbacks did have nothing positive to say about the new Marlins Park either, as throughout the series they had made some excellent contact on balls that had died in the cavernous stadium. Goldschmidt, in particular, suffered the most having 3 hit balls in the series that would have been clear home runs in almost every major league park, including a line drive off the top of the wall in dead center field that resulted in a mere double.

What was a promising sign, however, were strong outings for both Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson. Kennedy went 7 strong, allowing just 2 runs, while scattering 5 hits, and walking 3 in a game that closer J.J. Putz eventually lost. Hudson was a hard luck loser in a duel against Anibal Sanchez. He went 7, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, striking out 5. Sanchez came away with the victory going 6.2, allowing just 1 run.

Looking forward to the upcoming series against Washington, the D'Backs have recalled SS Stephen Drew and RP Takashi Saito, optioning IF Geoff Blum and Bryan Shaw to AAA. Drew is returning from right ankle surgery that ended his season just 86 games in last year. Saito, the former closer for the Dodgers, appeared in 30 games for the Brewers last year turning in a 2.03 ERA in 26 IP, and was a key member of their bullpen in the playoffs, pitching 7 scoreless innings, recording a win and 2 holds.

The D'Backs have elected to keep Goldschmidt with the big club, as they were encouraged with the way he swung the bat in the series with the Marlins. However, Gibson has said that it's very likely that it will be a platoon situation, with Overbay starting against righties. Also, getting bumped to the bench now against lefties is Jason Kubel. Kubel is hitting .277 against righties, and .222 against lefties. The D'Backs are electing to play Ryan Roberts in left against left handed pitching, while giving Bloomquist the nod at 3rd. There were talks of recalling David Winfree from AAA to platoon, but with the decision to keep Goldschmidt in the majors, it came down to not having a spot for Winfree.

A far too common sight for Young and the D'Backs

Change is Coming

New York (AP) -- The Diamondbacks are set to announcer a couple of roster moves today, in light of recent injuries and poor performances.

Starting center fielder Chris Young has been optioned to AAA after one of the worst starts to his major league career. The 28-year-old through his first 25 games has turned in a triple slash of .175/.292/.320, while striking out a whopping 37 times. Rather than bench him entirely, the organization feels it prudent that he get much needed help on his swing, and the best way to do this without hurting the major league club, will be to go down to AAA. During the demotion, Justin Upton will start in center, while Gerardo Parra will be inserted into the starting lineup in RF. David Winfree has been called up for the 4th OF spot. Winfree has been red hot in AAA thus far this year, turning in a .415/.433/.523 in 15 games. In 4 seasons total in AAA he's posted a .288/.334/.483 line.

Long reliever Wade Miley has been sent down to AAA, temporarily, so that Barry Enright could be called up to make an emergency spot start, due to Collmenter having to work 7 innings in relief in yesterday's marathon with the Mets. Enright made 7 starts for Arizona last year, going 1-4 with a 7.41 ERA.
