    M-azing

Beltre's three run shot propelled the Mariners over the Tribe.

AP - Cleveland, OH - First it was the four runs that the Mariners put up on the Indians. Then it was the failed run production by a highly offensive team, that led the Indians to defeat. A top of all that though, The Indians got the icing on the cake when Aaron Laffey had to leave the game, complaining of shoulder pain and stiffness. This was after being rocked in the early goings. The Tribe turned the mound over to Vinnie Chulk but the relief pitcher didn't enough offense to turn the tides and get the W.

The Tribe coming out of their hottest start to the season might be feeling, All-Star Hangover? That or they just got beat today, time will tell for this squad that failed to get a win against the second worst team, record wise, in the American Leage. Nick Johnson commented on the game. "When you lose to a team like that, you think to yourself, "How"?

"You think about all the good teams you beat, and the really good teams, you beat. And to lose to the Mariners today? It baffles me especially with the number of hits we got, we just couldn't get the run support for the mound today, and we suffered the loss."

The Indians will look to turn their woes around with Fausto Carmona taking the mound for the Tribe.

          Evened Up!

          Reason to Smile? Indians Win.

AP - Cleveland, OH - It was intense, right up until the Mariners 8th inning meltdown. They caught Fausto Carmona in a run down after a few good seconds of playing catch, Kengi Johjima sent the ball sailing over the pitchers head and down the left field line. The Indians who were leading 2-1 to that point were able to score too more on the error and put the nail in the coffin with Kerry Wood coming out of the bullpen.

"As relieved as we are for this win, we haven't been playing good." commented Manager Eric Wedge. "We've gone through the motions for months now and getting double digit hits and scoring no more than four runs? That won't get it done in the post-season, if we make it." With every notch in the W column though the Indians look more and more like they're going to "make it" to the Post season, a feat that is fresh in a lot of players minds as they lost the ALCS to then World Series champs, The Boston Red Sox.

"We don't forget" Said Fausto Carmona. "We look at that and say, that could have been us. That could of been our World Series, not theirs." Well now the Indians better a chance at another shot with their outstanding performance in the summer months, hopefully when the weather starts to get chilly, the Indians don't.

                Welcome Back!

Grady Sizemore, making a leaping catch.

AP - Cleveland, OH - The most amazing thing about this season for the Indians? All they've been doing, all the wins, all the loses, all the winning streaks, all the All-Star caliber play, all the AL Central leading times. All of them, done without one man. Grady Sizemore. Earlier in the season Sizemore went down with a broken arm, one that has sidelined him for 60 days. 60 days the Indians have been without their general in center field. And for 60 days all the Indians have done? Lead the AL Central, working towards the best record in the American League, and starting talk of being a World Series Champion.

What does it mean for a team like Cleveland? To be this good without your star player on the field? "Absolutely nothing." Said Victor Martinez. "We've been good without Grady, yes. We're the BEST with him though." The catcher has been a key piece to all the Indians success this season, keeping them afloat through a lot of games and being a main contributor for the team. All of this led to Martinez being named a unanimous All-Star starter at the catcher position. So for a guy like that to speak about a man that hasn't been playing since May? Speaks volumes about Sizemore's importance to this team.

Another piece of the puzzle, who has stepped up in Grady's absence is Ben Francisco who has patrolled center field for the Indians since the injury. "Oh yeah, he can have center field back man, that's too much responsibility." Said Francisco. "You know I like my spot in left, I really do. So he can be the general again, I love playing the right hand man to Sizemore. You think we're good now? Just wait until he gets settled in again, we should be unstoppable."

All of this praise for a man who hasn't stepped on the field but briefly this season? "I'm not being conceited. It's to be expected." Added Sizemore. "When you play in Cleveland, you're apart of a team. A family." He continued. "That's why you hear guys like Manny talking about wanting to come back, Thome too. These fans they treat you good, they come out to see you no matter the record. They praise you and to them, you're a hero. Cleveland has been a starving city, that kind of hunger that only a World Series will subside."

While Cleveland has starved for a Championship does one man bring that final piece to the puzzle, does one man really make all the difference for winning a World Series? "Absolutely". Commented Eric Wedge. "You're talking about the face of this franchise, your talking about a guy who can carry a team. He's key to us having playoff success. I like many others in this organization and fans of this team. We're glad to have him back." It's only a matter of time until we find out how much of a difference Sizemore makes to this club. He's scheduled to start tomorrow in center, Ben Francisco will move to left. Wily Mo Pena will continue to patrol right field.

                    Proving Them Wrong

Cliff Lee tossed his first complete game of the season.

AP - Cleveland, OH - If anyone was doubting that Cliff Lee didn't have it anymore, they can quietly shut up. Lee pitched a gem today as he tossed nine innings allowing one run on nine hits. It was his best performance of the season. A humble Cliff Lee met with reporters after the game to discuss the outing against the Mariners. "I owe it to the defense, we played great defense today, more than one occasion they had runners in scoring position and we were able to turn the double plays. I'm only as good as my defense and run production, today we got it done."

Speaking of run production, it came on two home runs. A three run shot by Nick Johnson in the first opened the door early. He did it with two outs too boot. The second homer came in the fourth inning when Wily Mo Pena hit a shot onto the Pepsi Home Run Porch in left field. He powered the ball knowing it was gone the minute it left his bat. That backed with outstanding pitching led the Indians to the dominating victory.

While they won't be able to go for a sweep. They will be in position for a 3-1 series lead when Carl Pavano takes the mound in game four. The Indians are looking to close this one out against the Mariners before a long road trip. The Tribe are looking forward to August baseball and the turning of the seasons. Incing ever so closer to Fall baseball has the city of Cleveland excited for the AL Central leading Indians.

                      doManated

                      Bedard shut down the Tribe.

AP - Cleveland, OH - Dominating. That's the only word to describe the play of the Seattle Mariners. Erik Bedard delivered for his ball club in ways unimaginable. Bedard pitched seven innings giving up eight hits however, he only allowed one run across. Good stats alone but then you add in the 12 strikeouts? Yeah, dominating.

"We couldn't hit the guy" Said newly reacquired Grady Sizemore. "He pitched some nasty stuff tonight. We went down swinging early and when we started to get hits on him, we couldn't put runs on him. All in all it was a bad day." A bad day indeed that ended with a lopsided loss to the second worst team in the American League.

"Maybe it's time we came back down to Earth?" Added Eric Wedge. "We've been playing out of the stratosphere baseball. Losing to the second worst team lets you come back down to earth and realize you are stoppable. You can be beat." Carl Pavano who appeared on the mound today is skeptical about his return to the mound next week. "I don't think I'll be here next week, I see Columbus in my future to be honest." Pavano has struggled lately with lineups and when he started to look good slipped once more, this being his sixth loss.

The Indians will now take to the road, starting with a three game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, who have given the Indians headaches in the early part of the season.

Yeah, he drove in a couple on a double and then against Betancourt he had a bases clearing Triple.

Ichiro made me pay on defense, he tossed out a bunch of guys going for extra bases. He popped out a lot.

                              New Blood

Zack Jackson joins the Tribe rotation.

AP - Cleveland, OH - When the Indians left Cleveland for Toronto. The Tribe held up the team bus while they awaited another bus from Columbus. One carrying pitcher Zach Jackson. Zach had been given the opportunity that he's waited for all season, a chance to pitch for a major league team. And coming on to the squad this late in the season means only one thing as far as expectations for him. Win.

"I feel the pressure". Answered Jackson when asked about the stress that's put on him to deliver early and often. "I feel it, and at the same time I welcome it. I want to be able to look back on this and say. 'They called you up for just this reason, win.' I know that the chips are stacked against me. Let them fall where they lay, I'll be ready."

Jackson was one of a short list of candidates to take over for struggling Carl Pavano. The Indians have almost tapped their AAA potential with pitching. If they needed to dig deeper into the farm system for Major League ready pitchers, they'd have to go further down the list to the AA level. Something that manager Eric Wedge wasn't ready to do, and GM Mark Shapiro trusts his managers, more than anyone else in the organization.

"We looked at a list of pitchers and right away Eric knocked off the AA guys, saying that it's too risky this late. That if we wait for them to develop at this level, we could lose ground in the AL Central. Zach seemed like the best fit for us, young, talented, has started for us before. He was the only one in our AAA line-up with a respectable record (6-4, 3.23 ERA)."

Zach will be joining the club as the fifth starter in the rotation. Aaron Laffey and Jake Westbrook took position jumps on the rotation. Westbrook will be skipped in his start for the new number four in Laffey. "I don't mind." said Westbrook. "I don't get to start against the Blue Jays, but I do get to start against Seattle, on the road." Something the Indians needed after the Mariners split their first season series meeting 2-2.
