Previous Season Outcome: 12-4, Clinched Division

Projected 1991 Outcome: One of the many surprise teams last year were the San Diego Chargers who came on top of their divison at 12-4. Nobody expected quarterback Mark Vlasic to do what he did. Just like nobody expected New England Patriots quarterback Marc Wilson to do what he did to make them a surprise team as well. But those surprises didn't end there as, too the shock of many, both teams ended up releasing their respective quarterbacks. However Marc Wilson made his way over to San Diego where he'll attempt to lead this new team. The Chargers cut a lot of fat this off-season while still remaining a powerhouse defensively. They released Vencie Glenn, Anthony Shelton, Lester Lyles, Henry Rolling, and Gerald Robinson to the screams of San Diego fans asking why? The answer was simply Felix Wright, Thane Gash, Eric Turner, Joe Mott, and Jimmie Jones. The Chargers ended up now with possibly the most exciting safteies in the league in Ex-Browns Wright and Gash who came together to San Diego. Not to mention the Chargers drafted highly-touted rookie prospect Eric Turner. The only downside of this off-season was the Chargers did not have enough money to re-sign Quinn Early to their #2 WR spot, so instead return man Nate Lewis will be the #2 and Wade Wilson (65) is actually the #3, which could turn out to be the chink in San Diego's armor.

Previous Season Outcome: 10-6, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Kansas City Chiefs felt cheated out of a potential playoff spot last season when they ended the year 10-6 with a 3-3 division game ranking, but still didn't make the playoffs. The amazing running of Christian Okoye led the way but the team was decimated at their lack of playoff capabilities. The Chiefs ended up loosing their starting quarterback, Steve Deberg to retirement. So they went and drafted two quarterbacks in Scott Zolak and Browning Nagle. Zolak is actually already being given the starting spot over Steve Pueller because of his training camp production. The Chiefs lost their backup to Okoye, Barry Word who had a solid 713 yards and 7 touchdowns as a backup! That loss of production could seriously hinder the Chiefs chances in 1991. Not to mention they also ended up loosing Stan Petry, their nickle corner. But the plus side fo the Chiefs is they aquired tight ends Pete Holohan and rookie Ben Coates who will both be starting and help the young quarterbacks develop by giving htem another option. Van Waiters was added as a linebacker ot the Chiefs already stacked corps where he will be backing up all three positions in case of fatigue or injury. The Kansas City Chiefs hardly changed in comparison to 1990 but the loss of Barry Word and Steve Deberg, who are now replaced by Bill Jones (68) and Scott Zolak (77) may not cut it in the long run and they could be worse off.

Previous Season Outcome: 9-7, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Indianapolis Colts appear to be stuck in a rut as they are unable to make the changes that are needed in order to become a playoff-caliber team. They're on the cusp but they can't seem to break through an invisible playoff wall. That being said they still have the majority of their members returning. As far as new players the main changes for the Colts are in their offensive line as they've added Ralph Mattes (85) and rookie Kevin Donnalley (76). Meanwhile Kevin Call (83) moves from right tackle to left tackle, and backup aquisition John Flannery (78) gives the Colts depth at that position.

Previous Season Outcome: 7-9, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Dallas Cowboys had a 7-9 season that saw them sitting at the bottom of their division, but critics are pleased about the bright future for the Cowboys. With youngsters Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Jay Novacek all coming along nicely the future in Dallas is looking up. Although apparently the Cowboys are not ready to let Michael Irvin take the #1 spot at the wide receiver position so the Cowboys went out and signed released Phoenix Cardinal veteran, Roy Green (86) to a contract and he'll be taking that role in the 1991 season. The Cowboys also lost two key defensive players in left end Daniel Stubbs who had 12 sacks in 1990 and middle linebacker Eugene Lockhart who led the team in tackles with 118. Rookie Roman Phifer and last years backup RE, Tony Tolbert will be taking over each position. The Cardinals are also excited about their 1st round draft pick, defensive tackle Eric Swann (83) who is already making his way as the teams #1 defensive tackle as Cowboy coaches see a slight improvement between him and Danny Noonan. The Cowboys progression over the past year should lead them to a 1-3 victory margain in comparison to last year.

Previous Season Outcome: 6-10, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: Everybody thought last years performance was a fluke bad season for the Miami Dolphins. Although judging from the off-season moves by the Dolphins they may have to get used to sitting at the bottom of their division. Dan Marino had a horrid 1990 season where he threw 11 touchdowns to his 24 interceptions. This year there is no doubt that he'll imrpove in that area, and a great help to him will be a solid runningback capable of taking the full load in Mike Rozier. Rozier only had 600 some yards last year but had 10 touchdowns despite splitting time. With Rozier at the halfback spot he's already a marked improvement over last years Sammie Smith/Tony Collins double headed monster. Defensively the Dolphins lost a key player in their starting cornerback, Tim McKyer. However last year Liffort Hobley had a breaking out party that proves he's capable of taking the #1 spot, and Miami is willing to give it to him.

Previous Season Outcome: 13-3, Super Bowl Champions

Projected 1991 Outcome: It's hard to go much higher than winning the Super Bowl, but that's what the Eagles are aiming for so they don't fall short in 1991. Considering the Eagles were considered to have a non-exsistant running game before the season started, they certainly did alright for themselves. WIth the decent play of Anthony Toney combined with Cunningham's feet the Eagles were able to get it going offensively. Meanwhile a key contribution came from starting rookies, Calvin Williams and Fred Barnett who played as well as they needed too to make Phildelphia a 13-3 team. Barnett started to progress even better than Williams near the end of the season and Barnett out-shined Williams during the playoffs, including grabbing the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl's final seconds. The Eagles suffered only a slight loss defensively as they had to let some of their depth go because they were starting to require too much monetary rescources. Although the Eagles are still capable with rookies Marty Carter and Merton Hanks joining the fray as well as veteran ex-Cardinal, Lonnie Young.

Previous Season Outcome: 10-6, Clinched Division

Projected 1991 Outcome: The San Francisco 49ers are just one year removed from being Super Bowl Champions, but many are questioning whether they have what's needed in their tanks to make another run for a title. Last year the 49ers were sorely disappointed when both Joe Montana and Roger Craig were injured in the final week of the regular season, forcing Steve Young and Dexter Carter to moonlight in the wild card against Green Bay, and they were destroyed. With Montana back healthy San Francisco hopes to elevate their passing game with the addition of youngsters like Yancey Thigpen and Wesley Carroll. However two key components of thier team departed in the off-season, runningback Roger Craig and right tackle Bubba Paris. Craig will be sorely missed as he goes to another bay, in Tampa. Meanwhile Bubba Paris will take a short trip to San Diego to play with the Chargers. The 49ers addressed this issue though with the drafting of Pat Harlow (73), but Harlow is not ready for the full starting opportunity so for the meantime veteran Tom Ackerman (77) will take over Paris' position. The 49ers also recently signed free agent John L. Williams of Seattle Seahawk fame to a contract to be their #1 runner. However with these losses it'll be interesting to see if the 49ers can perform up to their 10-6 previous year mark, let alone have visions of holding a Super Bowl trophy.

Previous Season Outcome: 5-11, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Atlanta Falcons ended up making a lot of interesting decisions in the off-season. Firstly they let go some big-time talent in defensive tackle Tony Casillas (91), cornerback Charles Dimry (84), Houston Hoover (83) and Greg Davis (85). While they replaced all of them, they replaced them with far insuperior people, with the exception of Dimry being replaced by Lewis Billups, but Billups monetary requirement made his aquisition less fashionable. Davis was replaced by touted rookie kicker John Kasay. Meanwhile Tony Casillas was replaced by a far worse Blaise Winter (73). Instead Tory Epps (77) will be given the starting DT job. The Falcons are seriously consdering running a 3-4 now with the lack of depth at their DT position. The Falcons also made some horrible draft decisions, they ended up drafting a slew of mediocre offensive lineman in rookies R.Wells (69), M. Sullivan (69), G.Williams (71), C.Jones (67), E.Vega (58), and H.Boatswain (61) were all either drafted or signed, adding uncessary weight to the team. The only major bright spot was the addition of rookie quarterback Brett Favre. However the Falcons have yet to announce that he has the starting job. Chris Miller is still the main guy in Atlanta according to the depth charts but most people are predicting an early switch in the season that will see Brett Favre continue to play. Favre has already expressed his desire to be used, but will Atlanta deliver?

Previous Season Outcome: 9-7, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The New York Giants along with the Washington Redskins were both disappointed about not getting into the playoffs last year with their 9-7 records, but 2-4 division recards held them out. 1990 may have also been the last shot for the Giants to make it to the playoffs in awhile. Why? Because they've lost their two most important offensive players to retirement in the off-season. Phil Simms left and handed the reigns of the Giants to veteran backup, Jeff Hostetler. Meanwhile Ottis Anderson went out with a bang of a season (1,406 yds 8 td's) and let last years rookie, Rodney Hampton, have a shot this year at the starting job. The Giants did address some offensive issues by drafting rookie wide receiver Keenan McCardell who could easily become a #1 option someday. The Giants also drafted youngster Paul Justin, but head coaching is not keen on starting him over an experienced Hostetler just yet so their going to keep him on the bench. And while they didn't need it, with having Guyton on the team the Giants went and signed big-name free agent Vince Newsome (90) to a contract and he'll be starting at the free saftey spot. The Giants are going to need a lot fo production from their backups-turned-starters this season if they want to stay at the same level, otherwise they may have to accept the fact that they are on the cusp of rebuilding.

Previous Season Outcome: 6-10, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The good news for the New York Jets is that their keeping cohesion on there team, especially on the offense as there's not a single new starter on the teams offense. The bad news? It's an offense that went 6-10. Blair Thomas returns healthy this season however after a great start where he had 540 yards at 4.6 ypc with 6 touchdowns prior-to-injury in his rookie season. This boost to the Jets should also be helped along with the addition of some defense rookies like LOLB Mo Lewis who will take over immediately at that spot since the Jets released both Joe Mott and Jason Glenn from that position. Jets kicker Pat Leahy also retired in the off-season at the rip-old age of 40, and will be rplaced by Fuad Reveiz. The New York Jets are going to need much better production out of their quarterback Ken O'Brien if they want to have a better 1991 season. O'Brien was the main reason for their downfall, despite throwing for 3,003 yards and 16 touchdowns, O'Brien had an additional 30 interceptions! 30 interceptions! Many were surprised O'Brien was even allowed to stay on the team and wasn't just cut. It's surprising that his rating was even allowed above 60 at 61.2.

Previous Season Outcome: 11-5, Clinched Division

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Lions division was backwards last season, everybody expected the order from best to worst to go Bears, Vikings, Packers, Lions, and boy were they wrong. The Lions clinched their division with an 11-5 record because of one reason and one reason alone, Barry Sanders. Sanders demolished the competition on his way to 1,621 yards and 9 touchdowns despite missing two games due to injury. The Detroit Lions also made some decisions in the off-season to rid themselves of excess fat in the defensiveback department and made up for it with the signings of Trevor Tillman (76) and the drafting of Darryl Lewis (78). However the Lions offensive line got even worse, if possible, in the off-season when Harvey Salem decided to leave Detroit. With nobody willing to come to Detroit to fill Salem's position the Lions ended up having to have Roy Foster be their starting right tackle (70). Whether or not Salem's loss will adversely affect Sander's run game, or make Peete hae to run for his life even more, has yet to be seen, but the Lions didn't improve themselves as a team by much in the off-season. This is the year tha Detroit needs to slam home another great season if they want to shake off the fluke season acusations.

Previous Season Outcome: 11-5, Playoff Birth

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Green Bay Packers upset many teams last year on their way to an 11-5 record. With the adequate offensive play mixed together with a top-notch defense the Packers were a force to be reckoned with, but many losses in this off-season could make 1991 a tought year for Green Bay. Loosing your #1 corner is always bad as Mark Lee who accounted for 5 interceptions and was leading the league for awhile prior-to-injury left the team. Instead ex-#2 Jerry Holmes (90) will take the #1 spot and free agent aquisition from the AFC Champion Oilers, Cris Dishman (87) will slide to #2 leaving practically no loss defensively in the passing game. However whether or not Anthony Bell (88) can replace Tim Harris 104 tackle, 10 sack, 7 forced fumble breakout 1990 season, which was a big reason for their success, has yet to be seen.

Previous Season Outcome: 12-4, Clinched Division

Projected 1991 Outcome: The New England Patriots went from zeros to heros quicker than possibly any team in NFL histroy. Last years surprising output saw them win their division with an unprecedented 12-4 record. The main reason for their success was the surprising play of veteran quarterback Marc Wilson who had 2,701 yards 25 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. As well as John Stephens doing some hardy running for the team. Although that's going to change in 1991 as Wilson was let go due to his high salary demands, instead the Patriots are taking a gamble on Steve Beuerlein to lead them back to the top of their division. Whether or not Steve does well will be key to the Patriots success, but lord knows he has some solid targets in outbreaking Irving Fryar and Hart Lee Dykes who performed exceptionally well last season as well. The Patriots defense remaind nearly untouched, keeping that strong linebacking corps together. To the surprise of many Fred Marion returned at age 32 despite rumors of him retiring. Together with another veteran, Roland James, and Ronnie Lippett the Patriots have an unsung backfield in comparison to other teams. While the teams defensive tackles could use some help, Brent Williams anchors their left side (89) and should perform well. The Patriots also addressed their biggest issue in the off-season, their offensive-line. They let go Paul Fairchild, which upset the Patriot fans, but with that money they aquired both Ralph Tamm (88) and Ronald Dixon (86) who are now both starting left and right guards respectively. The Patriots have a shot at remaining competative, but a few new players will have to step it up.

So just to keep you guys up on it i'm transferring the posts of that here, to get this up to that point as well, and continue with the 1992 Free Agency.

Previous Season Outcome: 7-9, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: Considering all of the key injuries that the Raiders suffered last season it's surprising that they were capable of pulling out a 7 victory season. Whether it was Jay Schroeder getting knocked out for a game, Bo Jackson or Marcus Allen getting injured for the season, the Raiders struggled. The Raiders went and made some key off-season moves in aquired quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver to challenge Schroeder who had a disappointing 13 touchdown, 21 interception season. Not to potentially the biggest free agent in the market was let loose by Los Angeles, in Bo Jackson. The Raiders are confident that Marcus Allen can take the load, if he can stay healthy that is. Ervin Randle also joined the team from Tampa and he'll add a solid middle linebacker to help flesh out their corps. The Los Angeles Raiders have the chance to improve if they can remain healthy. Last season was obviously marred with all the injuries but if they can stay healthy, and work in the new rookies like Henry Jones, Jake Reed, Michael Jackson, etc they should be able to pull off some victories in 1991 and maybe get back to their top form again.
