    The NFL Today
    =========================================
    Hosts
    ------------

    Greg Gumbel

    Terry Bradshaw

    **Program already in progress**

Gumbel: Boy what an exciting wild card weekend for the NFL playoffs.

Bradshaw: Darn tootin' was it exciting. Other than an ugly Buffalo game I was pretty pleased with the results.

Gumbel: Okay well let's talk about that game. Looks like your Steelers bit the bullet against the Buffalo Bills this week.

Bradshaw: Yeah unfortunately the stellar defense couldn't hold the Bills offense late in the 4th. It was a solid defensive game from both teams up until that point. Frankly I always expected Buffalo to win, as I predicted. However I did get my hopes up for Pittsburgh when they were up 12-10 late in the game.

Gumbel: So the Bills barely squeak by. The main problem I saw was that Thurman Thomas got nothing going on the ground. That could be a mjaor issue as he is a big part of that team's success.

Bradshaw: I have faith in Thomas, and I'm pretty sure he'll play just fine come the divisional round.

Gumbel: On the other side of the AFC we had a sort of upset goin' on between Cincinnati and San Diego.

Bradshaw: San Diego has really impressed me so far this year.

Gumbel: The Chargers went into the game without their starting quarterback hero this year, Mark Vlasic, and instead went with some guy named John Friesz.

Bradshaw: That's probably exactly what many people around America said when they saw Friesz in the game tossing touchdowns.

Gumbel: Marion Butts played well, and the Bengals just couldn't get it going. But in all fairness they were severely beat up with the loss of both Boomer Esiason and James Brooks.

Bradshaw: If Esiason and Brooks were healthy I'm not sure the Chargers would've advanced. But hey, no "if's" in the playoffs, so the Chargers got the upperhand.

Gumbel: Now let's move on to the NFC wild card games. Two teams that nobody expected to see in the playoffs, Seattle and Tampa Bay, squared off in a surprisingly entertaining matchup.

Bradshaw: Boy did this one have a great ending. The Seahawks are my surprise pick this year. Dave Krieg and Brian Blades are doing amazing things this year, and they proved it with that bomb late in the game to pull out the victory.

Gumbel: However can they get to the big game without a run game? John L. Williams and Chris Warren are splitting time in a rather unsuccessful output so far the past few games. But I guess time will tell. Now onto the final game.

Bradshaw: Biggest upset of the round.

Gumbel: You got that right. The Green Bay Packers came in and destroyed the returning champion 49ers. Now the 49ers were playing without Joe Montana and Roger Craig, but is that a good enough excuse?

Bradshaw: No it's not. Steve Young is certainly no slouch, and he is the reason the 49ers lost this game, plain and simple. You can't expect to pull out a victory when you go out there and throw 4 interceptions.

Gumbel: But don't you think that was largely due to the lack of a running game without Roger Craig? I mean they had there 2nd string return man, Dexter Carter, running the football. He's an untested rookie, that's asking a lot.

Bradshaw: Well he's a football player Brian, and he should be ready to step up if needed. The 49ers were just simply out played on defense by the Packers all day long. The Packers had the 49ers number.

Gumbel: Brent Fullwood also filled in nicely for the injured Keith Woodside. Although Green Bay has certainly not been known for their running game as of late.

Bradshaw: Brent Fullwood did exactly what he had to do for the Packers to win, and that was play average. The Packers didn't need him to run hog wild on the 49ers, but they needed him to at least be getting 3 yards or so per carry, and he went out there and did that.

Gumbel: Now we're lookin' at the second picture here for the playoffs, and what are you predicitions for the games Terry?

Bradshaw: I'm going to have to go with the Eagles, Packers, Chargers, and Bills moving on.

Gumbel: Alright then, well I'm going to agree with you on the Eagles, Packers, and Chargers. However I'm going to suggest that the Houston Oilers with MVP Warren Moon will manage to overtake Buffalo. The Bills didn't look confident enough against Pittsburgh and I expect the Oilers to take advantage of that.

    Bradshaw: Whatever you say Brian.

Gumbel: Exactly, and that's all the time we have for you tonight folks. Thank you for joining us here on the NFL Today, and we hope you're ready for some great football this weekend.

      Steve Young Speaks Out
AP - In a press conference after the wild card playoff game Steve Young had a few interesting words that peaked the interest of the local media.
"Of course i'm not happy. What kind of question is that? I've done my job all season long by sitting on the bench and watching Joe do his thing. Now that I come in and have a chance there's a lot of pressure that's put on me. I'm sorry if you can't understand that, but it's not easy for somebody to just go out there and start winning. Everybody needs a warm-up time. Now I know it was publicized earlier this year where I voiced my distaste in being a backup. I just want to clear it out now that this is no way reflect my opinion of the 49ers franchise, or Joe Montana. What I merely meant to say is, like any good competitor, I just wish I had some time to go out there and change things. Obviously I had the chance today, and I didn't deliver. For that I apologize to my teammates, and most importantly, the San Francisco fans. I promise you, if i'm given another shot I'll make the best of it. However right here and now this is Joe's team, and he is the leader. I am merely the student.
The outcry was inspired by some tactful comments by reporters in regards to Steve Youngs 4 interception performance against the Green Bay Packers. Whether or not Steve Young is telling the truth about his ability to accept his backup role will be determined in the upcoming off-season. Rumor has it that many teams are interested in potentially signing him. However his performance against the Packers may deflect any offers that were initially brewing.

1990 - Playoff Divisional Round Preview
        AFC Divisional Game 1
        ===============================================
        The Matchup

        The Injuries

        The Key Players
        Buffalo Bills
        • RE - Bruce Smith - 99 Ovr
        • QB - Jim Kelly - 98 Ovr
        • C - Kent Hull - 98 Ovr
        • HB - Thurman Thomas - 96 Ovr

        Houston Oilers
        • QB - Warren Moon - 99 Ovr
        • RE - Sean Jones - 95 Ovr
        • RG - Bruce Matthews - 94 Ovr
        • LG - Mike Munchak - 94 Ovr

        Coach's Corner
        ==========================================
        Coach: Bills - Marv Levy
        Gameplan
        1. Get Andre Reed working in the game early. If we can establish a repore with him and Kelly at the beginning of the game then we should be set.
        2. We definately need to amp up the pass protection. Houston passes over 60% of the time, so there's no doubt the MVP of the league, Warren Moon, will be going to the air.
        3. Our offensive line needs to hold Sean Jones and the blitzing linebackers from getting to Kelly.
        4. Hopefully Thurman Thomas can pickup after a lackluster wild card performance.
        5. Do not turnover the ball. This looks like it'll be a shootout with our high powered offenses going at it. The last thing we need to do is hand them the win with a key turnover.

        Coach: Oilers - Jack Pardee
        Gameplan
        1. Pass, pass, pass. I don't think the Bills pass defense will be capable of stopping us. There a run defense team with there stellar linebackers and defensivelineman, but not pass protectors.
        2. Change it up every once and awhile with Lorenzo White/Mike Rozier pounding the ball on shorts.
        3. I have a feeling our lower recievers will get some solid matchups against Bill defenders, namely Curtis Duncan.
        4. We must utilize our linebacker speed and blitz Jim Kelly to keep him off his balance all day long.
        5. I expect our defensivebacks to come up big in this game, they've been salivating at the thought of defeating Kelly's pass game.
        6. If Buffalo plays like they did last week, then we should sail to victory.

Left: On the second play of the game Houston asserted that they came to play with this hard tackle by Ray Childress. Childress managed to knock the ball loose for the Oilers to recover at Buffalo's 7 yard line.
Right: However Buffalo wasn't going to roll over and die so easily, as Houston started at Buffalo's 7 yard line, yet didn't get a single point. Moon tried to lob this pass to Tony Jones in the back of the endzone but David Poole managed to wrap his gloves around it.

Left: Al Edwards fumbled a punt return and it was picked up by Oilers backup linebacker, Robert Lyles.
Right: Oilers cornerback Richard Johnson stretches out to intercept this Jim Kelly pass. Johnson would speed his way downfield 53 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-3 Houston in the 2nd quarter.

Left: Jim Kelly tossed up a beauty of a pass to wide receiver Andre Reed. This one came from 38 yards out to give Buffalo the lead back, 10 to 7.
Right: On the next Buffalo drive a severe case of Deja Vu hit Richard Johnson as Kelly threaded this needle to Andre Reed. Reed's 31 yard 2nd touchdown catch would put the Bills up 17 to 7.

Left: The Oilers did a good job of marching downfield with only 53 seconds left in the first half. Warren Moon managed to rifle this pass to Drew Hill for the touchdown on the final play, barely avoiding a Bruce Smith sack.
Right: Natre Odomes picked off this Warren Moon pass at the beginning of the 2nd half, returning it 30 yards for the touchdown.

Left: Warren Moon threw yet another touchdown apss to Drew Hill from 13 yards out to make it 24 to 21 Buffalo with 5:12 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Right: The Bills and Oilers fought back and forth from the half-way point of the 3rd quarter missing field goal after field goal. Until the Oilers cut through the silence with a miraculous late game play. Warren Moon tossed to a wide-open mis-matched Tony Jones for a 33 yard touchdown with only 11 seconds remaining in the game. Darryl Talley was unable to keep up coverage with the Jones and the Bills simply ran out of time, 28 to 27 Houston.

          Game Notes
          --------------------------------------------
-Once again Thurman Thomas had a below 3.0 average. However Mike Rozier had 3.1 I decided to still raise the running sliders.

            Coach's Corner
            ==========================================
            Coach: Seahawks - Chuck Knox
            Gameplan
            1. Dave Krieg should connect with Brian Blades again. They've been great together all season long and today should be no different.
            2. OUr offensive line has there work cut out for them. The Eagles have a solid defensive line iwth Reggie White, Mike Golic, and Clyd Simmons with an alternating Jerome Brown. This will be the key in our gameplan, if we can stop them from pressuring Krieg.
            3. Chris Warren definately needs to step it up compared to his last game. We were lucky it didn't cost us against Tampa Bay.
            4. We have to be careful about rushing Cunningham as he could easily run all over us.
            5. Darren Comeaux will return from his injury to help us out in today's game. This could be a fctor as Darren was having a great year prior to getting hurt. Hopefully he picks up right where he left off.

            Coach: Eagles - Buddy Ryan
            Gameplan
            1. Once again Anthony Toney will be are full-time back with Sherman out not allowing us to split carries. Last week he played decently, let's see how he improves this week.
            2. Our secondary should be able to destroy Krieg. With Hopkins and Waters watching the top, and Eric Allen and Ben Smith guarding at CB I doubt the Seahawks will pass on us.
            3. Pressure, pressure and more pressure, is the name of the game for Reggie White and Clyde Simmons. Let's see it get done.
            4. We're going to utlize Joyner, Small, and Evans a lot on linebacker blitzes
            5. We must keep Brian Blades out of the game, he is the entire Seattle offense.
            6. Hopefully the game won't rely on Ruzek's leg.

              --------------------------------------------

Left: Anthony Toney gets tackled but manages to collapse forward into the endzone. This 1 yard run topped off the Eagles opening drive making it 7-3 Philadelphia with 2:45 left in the 1st quarter.
Right: Randall Cunningham didn't find anybody open so he scampered his way for an 8 yard touchdown run. The score would put the Eagles up 14 to 3.

Left: Dave Krieg managed to find Ron Hellar in the back of the endzone for this touchdown pass. The 6 yard score would bring it to a one possession game as Seattle was down 17 to 13 with 25 seconds in the half.
Right:Anthony Toney would score his second touchdown of the night here when he shakes off a Seattle defender. Toney would go untouched 48 yards for the score to make it 24 to 13 Eagles.

Left: Cunningham didn't want his running ability to outshine his passing as he proved his worth once again here on this touchdown pass to rookie Fred Barnett. This 6 yard strike would put Phialdelphia well ahead, 31 to 13.
Right: Jessie Smalls manages to pick off this errant Krieg pass at the Eagles 38 yard line, halting a scoring drive.

Left: Patrick Hunter managed to intercept this Randall Cunningham pass. Hunter then did what he's done all year by running it back 83 yards for the score. After a successful 2 point conversion the score would read 31 to 21 Eagles with 6:01 left in the game.
Right: Too little too late for the Seahawks as Chris Warren managed to bull into the endzone on this 8 yard Dave Krieg pass. The score would make it 31 to 27 Eagles, with 1:35 remaining. However the Seahawks would not be able to recover the onside kick, giving the game away to the Philaelphia Eagles.

                Coach's Corner
                ==========================================
                Coach: Chargers - Dan Henning
                Gameplan
                1. With the 14th ranked pass defense in the league we should expect a decent game out of our quarterback.
                2. Mark Vlasic will obviously be out for the remainder of the year so John Friesz will once again try and slip out a victory. We were surprised with the play of Friesz last week against the Bengals. Hopefully this week he keeps it up.
                3. Marion Butts needs to continue his big-games for us. He is the reason our offense is firing on all cylinders. While the Patriots do have the 7th ranked rush defense I think he'll have no problem.
                4. Anthony Miller wasn't in last week's game much, we need to get him away from Lippett and open.
                5. Once again we're going to have to put lots of pressure on Marc Wilson with our linebackers O'Neal, Seau, and Smith Jr.

                Coach: Patriots - Rod Rust
                Gameplan
                1. The Chargers have the 2nd best running defense in the league. It's going to be imperative thatJohn Stephens establishes the ground game. We can't let the entire game rest on Marc Wilson's shoulders.
                2. Our offensive line needs to proove they are superior to the Chargers defensive line and protect Wilson at all costs. We expect numerous linebacker blitzes, we're going to need the HB's and fullback Allen to pick those up if we want to stand a chance.
                3. All day long we're going to matchup Ronnie Lippett with Anthony Miller. This should effectively contain him. Meanwhile we'll have Maurice Hurst and Rod McSwain alternating on Quinn Early.
                4. Vincent Brown and Andre Tippett need to be able to stop the outside run for Marion Butts. If we can isolate him to the inside I think our DT's, Tim Goad and Deriggi can handle him.
                5. We must keep Brian Blades out of the game, he is the entire Seattle offense.
                6. Irving Fryar and Hart Lee Dykes should be able to shake of Gil Byrd. Byrd may be a good cornerback but I have faith in our receivers.

Left: Leslie O'Neal and breakout rookie Junior Seau get hyped up for the game early on. These two, along with Billy Ray Smith Jr. comprised , arguably, the best linebacking corps of the season.
Right: On the Patriots first drive they marched down field, but once in the red-zone Marc Wilson made a mistake throwing the ball to Gil Byrd who reached out and plucked the ball out of the air.

Left: On the following Charger drive Friesz and Butts marched downfield and capped it off with a 16 yard touchdown pass to return man, Nate Lewis.
Right: However on the next Charger drive Friesz would not be as successful as he ended up throwing this errant pass into the hands of Patriots middle linebacker, Johnny Rembert.

Left: Vencie Glenn destroyed Sammy Martin on this pass forcing him to fumble the football. The Chargers Leslie O'Neal would recover the fumble, once again turning the ball over within Charger territory.
Right: Marion Butts made it look easy thanks to some solid blocking from his offensive lineman as he waltzed in for this 1 yard touchdown run. The score would mark up the board 14 to zip, San Diego.

Left: The Patriots try to mount a comeback as a mis-matched Sammy Martin catches this Marc Vlasic pass and takes it to the house, 75 yards. The touchdown would finally put New England on the board down 21 to 7.
Right: The Patriots make it interesting as Irving Fryar catches this WR screen pass. A solid block from Armstrong would spring Fryar free 8 yards to paydirt. The Patriots trailed the Chargers, 24 to 14.

Left: The New England Patriots get the crowd into it as they are so close to completing a comeback victory. On a catch by Nate Lewis a tough hit by Rod McSwain knocks the ball loose. Patriots linebacker Hobby picks up the rock and totes it 22 yards to the endzone. The score would make it 24 to 21, San Diego, with only the 4th quarter left to play.
Right: After giving the Chargers hope with a 3 to 21 point spread over the past two quarters, Friesz says enough is enough. With 5:40 remaining in the game John Friesz lobs the ball to Nate Lewis for the 27 yard touchdown pass. The score would stay the same until the final gun, 31 to 21, Chargers.

                    Coach's Corner
                    ==========================================
                    Coach: Packers - Lindy Infante
                    Gameplan
                    1. Chuck Cecil should be playing in this game as he comes back from injury. We expect him to team up with Woods and Lee/Holmes to produce a solid pass defense against Rodney Peete.
                    2. We MUST shut down Barry Sanders, he is there entire offense.
                    3. Brock, Brown, and Patterson are going to have to step up there game and win the battle against the Lions offensive line.
                    4. Keith Woodside is still out so Brent Fullwood will get the start at runningback again this time. Hopefully he produces as well as he did last week in our destruction of the 49ers.
                    5. Sterling Sharpe should be able to blaze past McNorton today. We don't expect the Lions will be able to contain him.

                    Coach: Lions - Wayne Fontes
                    Gameplan
                    1. The Packers defensive line is one of the weakest lines in the league. That should allow Sanders to get past the 1st level of defense and up to the linebackers. We'll expect him to produce big.
                    2. As much as we love to run we're going to need to get Peete established. Otherwise Green Bay's defense will key the run and make it a tough game for us.
                    3. Field position is going to be a very important aspect of this game. Luckily we'll have Mel Gray returning the punts nad kicks.
                    4. With Chris Spielman on the sidelines indefinately we'll be looking for Dennis Gibson to continue his surprising play.
                    5. We don't expect much out of Brent Fullwood so we should easily take care of him as our defensive line is superior to their offensive line. However he did play decently last week against San Francisco. Although I believe that was just a fluke.
                    6. We need to get as much pressure on Don Majikowski as possible. He's not good throwing off his feet and if we can pressure him and rattle his cage he won't be effective.

                      --------------------------------------------

Left: The first non-punting event of the game came in the 2nd quarter when Brian Noble crushed Barry Sanders knocking the ball loose on a rare fumble. The Packers Tim Harris recovered it at Detroit's own 31 yard line.
Right: The Packers capitalized on the turnover with this 7 yard strike from Don Mjaikowski to Sterling Sharpe.

Left: A returning Chuck Cecil makes a big play ont he following drive as Rodney Peete throws an interception while trying to force in a touchdown throw. Cecil would get tackled ath the Pacekrs 1 yard line.
Right: Rodney Peete finally shakes off the interception bug here as he throws a touchdown pass to Lions wideout, Robert Clark. The 21 yard touchdown would end the half in a 7-7 tie, keeping Detroit in the hunt.

Left: On the opening drive of the 2nd half Rodney Peete threw his 2nd interception, the first to Jerry Holmes, who returned the ball to Detroit's own 39 yard line.
Right: The Packers continued to take advantage of the Lions turnovers as Don Majikowski threw his 2nd touchdown pass to Sterling Sharpe, this one from 16 yards out, to make it 14 to 7 Green Bay with 4:36 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Left: Peete tossed up his third interception of the night, and the 2nd to Jerry Holmes with 7:28 remaining in the 4th quarter. The interception would give Green Bay the football at Detroits 15 yard line.
Right: The third touchdown off a turnover for Green Bay came as Darrell Thompson, subbed for Brent Fullwood, pounded it into the endzone from 2 yards out. The scoreboard would read 21 to 7, Green Bay.

Left: The Packers 4th string runningback, Vince Workman, managed to get a rare carry today. And boy did he make the most out of it. Vince Workman broke a Lion tackle and then kicked it up field 79 yards for the touchdown run. The Packers score started to run up as they were ahead 28 to 7 with 1:39 remaining in the game.
Right: The Packers didn't just lay down and let it end, on the ensuing kick off Mel Gray fumbled the football. Ron Pitts recovered the fumbled and walked in 14 yards for the touchdown return, mkaing it 35 to 7 Green Bay. The Packers won the game, scoring all 32 of 35 points off of turnovers.

                        Hosts
                        ------------

                        Greg Gumbel

                        Terry Bradshaw

                        **Program already in progress**

Gumbel: Well this year's divisional round was certainly an exciting one. We have some expected victors, and some surprises, but overall it was just some great football.

Bradshaw You're darn right we have some surprises, how about thos Chargers and Packers? Nobody expected either of these teams to be in the positions they are at this moment. They both have a shot at making the Super Bowl, something completely unexpected.

Gumbel: In order to do so the Chargers will have to take out the red-hot Houston Oilers team. Warren Moon, the regular season MVP, is certainly taking his team on his shoulders.

Bradshaw: As any good quarterback should. Warren Moon has the mechanics needed to lead Houston to a championship. And frankly I feel that they're going to advance to the super bowl.

Gumbel: Do you now? What has you so confident that Marion Butts and company won't take out the Oilers this weekend?

Bradshaw: Well namely, John Friesz. In his regular season games, filling in for Vlasic, he had 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions. Last week he played a solid game. But I feel that it was luck. I don't think Friesz has what it takes to be a Super Bowl quarterback in this league, he's a rookie for christ' sake. I fully expect the Houston Oiler defense to take advantage of that.

Gumbel: Now another team that has befallen a tough quarterback situation was Detroit. Rodney Peete threw three interceptions in there loss to the Packers last night.

Bradshaw: They completely switched there gameplan, and it backfired. When you have a runner capable of doing the things Barry Sanders can do, don't deviate. Rodney Peete had no business throwing the ball as much as he did. Even if Sanders hadn't breakin a long run yet.

Gumbel: So what about the Philadelphia Eagles? They are looking strong as they dethroned the Seahawks and their win streak.

Bradshaw: They did a good job of putting up points against Seattle, but they barely escaped with the victory. The score was 31 to 27 after all. The Eagles need to be careful if they want to keep on going. The Green Bay Packers already surprised San Francisco and Detroit. So they have to make sure there on guard and don't get overconfident or we could see Green Bay in New Orleans, January 28th.

Gumbel: So you already mentioned next weeks championship games. You said you have Houston going over San Diego. As do I. As Marion Butts lack of a run game this week may continue and hurt San Diego. But who do you have going to the super bowl on the NFC side of things?

Bradshaw: Well the Eagles have played great all year long. Randall Cunningham has proven he can hang with the big boys. However they are missing there starting runningback, Heath Sherman. While he is not the best HB out there, the mere fact that they don't have a starter can put a cog in that offensive wheel. The Packers have already shredded through the Lions and 49ers defenses. It won't surprise me if they can disect the outstanding Philly defense here too. So, i'm going with the Packers.

Gumbel: Really? Wow, well I personally believe that Cunningham and Anthony Toney will get things going off on the right foot this weekend. I doubt the Packers offense will be able to penetrate this great Philadelphia defense. So the Eagles are my pick.

Bradshaw: Either way it's going to be a great sunday!

Gumbel: You got that right. Well ladies and gentlemen we'll be right back after this messages.

                        **fuzz**

                          Coach's Corner
                          ==========================================
                          Coach: Chargers - Dan Henning
                          Gameplan
                          1. Marion Butts should be able to run all over the Houston defense. They're not even ranked over 20 in the league, so we expect him to pick it up, despite a lackluster game against New England last week.
                          2. John Friesz is going to have to play as effeciently as he did last week if we hope to come out of here with the win. It's going to be a tough order as the Oilers are equipped with a solid secondary unit.
                          3. Our linebackers will blitz the hell out of Warren Moon, not allowing him to show up in MVP form.
                          4. We should be able to handle there lackluster run attack of Mike Rozier and Lorenzo White with ease.
                          5. Our line is superior to thier offensive line so i'm expecting there to be non-stop pressure.

                          Coach: Oilers - Jack Pardee
                          Gameplan
                          1. We have the league's MVP, as long as Moon keeps playing the way he has, we'll win.
                          2. I'm worried about their blitzing linebackers, but we have a very talented offensive line so I feel confident that they'll be able to stop any blitzes.
                          3. Mike Rozier might become a valuable weapon for us out of the backfield on passes.
                          4. Richard Johnson is going to have to shut out Anthony Miller. Miller hasn't been having a great post-season anyway, but we won't let that slump end tonight.
                          5. We are fully healthy at every position. There's something to be said about htat.
                          6. There rookie quarterback isn't going to do anything against us. Childress and Jones should be able to pound through the overrated Chargers offensive line and get pressure. I doubt the kid will hold up in the big game.

Left: Richard Johnson causes the first turnover of the game on the final play of the 1st quarter. This errant John Friesz pass would stop a potential touchdown drive for the Chargers.
Right: Gerald McNiel made a bad decision taking this punt return and not calling for the fair catch. After getting plowed by Figaro the loose football was scooped up by Henry Rollings. The backup MLB chugged downfield 44 yards for the touchdown score. It would be 10-0 San Diego,, giving them a sizeable early lead.

Left: One way for Richard Johnson to keep Anthony Miller out of the game is intercept every pass that comes his way! Richard Johnson picks off John Friesz for the second time today, only this time, he returns it 52 yards to paydirt. The score would put Houston back in the game with a 10 to 7 score, down by 3.
Right: Richard Johnson, who only had 4 interceptions all regular season, intercepts his third pass in this game on the very next John Friesz pass attempt with 6:59 left in the 3rd.

Left: Warren Moon, the regular season MVP, could not get things going in this game as the Chargers defense had him pressured all day long. Whether it was blitzing linebackers like Junior Seau, or the defensive line crushing Houston's offensive line on there way to another brutal quarterback hit, the MVP looked far from MVP form.
Right: Teddy Garcia saves the day for a lackluster Houston offense with this 42 yard field goal with 1:54 left in the game. The field goal would give the Oilers the lead, and eventually the win, 13 to 10.

Left: On the 2nd punt return of the night Eric Allen got smashed by linebacker Tony Bennett. The ball squirted out and it was recovered by Johnny Holland at the 50 yard line.
Right: Majkowski found a wide-open Keith Woodside on the right side of the field for the easy 4 yard touchdown pass. The score would put Green Bay up, 7 to 3.

Left: Eric Allen fumbled his 2nd on the night on the very next punt attempt by Don Bracken.. As a result it was scooped up by Bobby Houston, who ran the ball back 36 yards for the touchdown, giving Green Bay a sizeable 14 to 3 lead.
Right: Wes Hopkins had enough with the lack of offense production and took matters into his own hands. Hopkins picked off this Don Majkowski pass and returned it 85 yards to the endzone. The first touchdown of the night for the Eagles would make the score 14 to 10, Green Bay.

Left: Majkowski perfectly placed this pass through Eagles defenders into Keith Woodside's hands. The 3 yard touchdown pass would make it 21 to 10 Packers as the final play of the opening half.
Right: Majkowski was under pressure all throughout the 3rd quarter as seen here. Reggie White rode Majkowski into the ground for the sack.

Left: The Eagles drove down the field in the 4th quarter and Randall Cunningham topped the drive off with this 2 yard pass to tight end, Keith Jackson. After a successful 2 point conversion the Eagles would surprisingly tie up the game at 21 with 2:21 remaining.
Right: While the Packers were driving Keith Woodside fumbled the football after a hit from Ben Smith. Eagles defensive tackle, Clyde Simmons, managed to pick up the fumble and give Philadelphia the ball in Green Bay territory with 1:49 remaining. Roger Ruzek would kick a field goal to make it 24-21 Philadelphia soon after.

Left: When everybody thought it was over, a solid late drive by the Packers got Chris Jacke within field goal range. Jacke punched in this32 yard field goal with a mere 6 seconds remaining in the game to bring it into overtime as the final regulation score read 24 to 24.
Right: After the Eagles defense managed to hold the Packers on the opening overtime drive, Cunningham drove his Eagles to within field goal range. Roger Ruzek came out and booted in this 27 yard attempt to win the game for the Eagles, 27 to 24.

                                WELCOME TO SUPERBOWL XXV!

The Matchup * With commentary from Brian Gumble
                                • Quarterbacks: If I was forced to choose between Randall Cunningham and Warren Moon to lead me to the big game, i'd go with Warren Moon at this point. Not only is he the regular season MVP, but he stretches the field in an offense that is designed for him. Moon creates statistical chasms if you compare his stats to Cunningham's. Adv: - Oilers
                                • Runningbacks: Well the Eagles original starting runningback, Heath Sherman is out. However Anthony Toney has improved so much over the past few weeks that he is now, I believe, better than Sherman ever would be. Toney has rushed for 308 yards on 59 carries for 2 touchdowns in the Divisional and Conference playoff rounds. He's proven his worth in my opinion to be a back for the Eagles at this point with his 5.2 ypc average. On the other hand Mike Rozier of the Oilers may have had a better regular season than Toney, but in the playoffs he's only rushed for 107 yards on 37 carries for no touchdowns. So this definately goes to Philadelphia. Adv: - Eagles
                                • Fullback - The Eagles have Keith Byars coming out of the fullback spot with his great pass catching ability. Meanwhile the Titans have a solid running fullback in Allen Pinkett. This could go either way. However since Phialdelphia and Houston are both passing teams, and Byars is the pass-oriented fullback. Adv: - Eagles
                                • Wide Receivers - The Oilers are loaded at wide receiver with Haywood Jeffries, Ernest Givens, Drew Hill, Tony Jones, and Gerald McNeil rounding them out. Meanwhile the Eagles have rookies Calvin Williams, Fred Barnett, and Mike Bellamy. With Kenny jackson, and Mike Quick finishing there lineup. The run and shoot offense of the Oilers is definatley giving them the advantage here. They may send two of their receivers to the pro bowl due to their numbers. Not to mention the inexperience nature of having two rookie WR's starting at your #1 and #2 spot for Philadelphia. While it may not have hindered the Eagles this far into the season, how they react in the big-game will be completely different. Adv: - Oilers
                                • Tight Ends - The Oilers don't have a conventional tight end, rather they just run Curtis Duncan out as another receiver. Meanwhile the Eagles have one of the better pass-catching tight ends in the league, in Keith Jackson. This matchup easily goes to the Eagles. Adv: - Eagles
                                • Offensive Line - Meanwhile the Eagles do have some top-notch offensive lineman in Ron Heller and David Alexander. Solt, Schad, and Darwin can't add up to the stellar line that Houston has produced. A large reason for Moon's success was the line in front of him, consisting of great linemen like Bruce Matthews, Mike Munchak, and David Williams, who will go to the pro bowl. Meanwhile Jay Pennison is their snapper, and Steinkuhler finishes out a solid line at left tackle. Adv: - Oilers
                                • Defensive Line - This is a tough one. You've got the Eagles with Reggie White and Mike Golic on the ends, and Clyde Simmons banging up the middle with Jerome Brown backing him up. White is considered the best along with Smith at his position. Meanwhile Golic is no snob this season. Simmons has proven his worth, however Jerome Brown has had a lackluster season. On the Oilers side of things you have Sean Jones and William Fuller playing the DE spots, and Ray Childress along with backup Doug Smith filling it. Jones and Fuller have had good years as expected. Ray Childress only had 3 sacks on the year but made 61 key tackles while his 2nd DT, Doug Smith, got 6 sacks and 40 tackles. Overall i'd have to say this is actually a push. Adv: - Tie
                                • Linebackers - The Oilers lineup linebackers Al Smith, Johnny Meads, and John Grimsley as their key guys. With Kozak, Lyles, and Lathon coming up behind them. John Grimsley has had an outstanding year with 105 tackles, 5 sacks, and 11 deflections for his team. With Al Smith close behind in the numbers. However there is a solid drop off for Meads who was hurt for a few games this year. On Philadelphia's side of things they're led by Byron Evans, Jessie Small, and Seth Joyner. With Hager, Harris, and Shaw pulling behind them. Seth Joyner led the team in tackling along with his 6 sacks and 11 deflections. Meanwhile Byron Evans played solidly also against the pass. Jesie Small had one of his better years, but overall statistically the Eagles linebackers upset in the tackle department. Joyner's team leading 86 was a far cry from the multiple 100+ of previous years. Adv: - Eagles
                                • Cornerbacks - The Eagles have some solid players at cornerback with youngster, Eric Allen leading the way. Right behind him is rookie Ben Smith and Sam Lilly. The overall inexperienced nature of this front has us questioning them. However they are incredibly skilled in every other aspect. The Oilers are led by Richard Johnson, who single handedly won them last weeks game against the Chargers. Johnson is teammed with youngster Cris Dishman and veteran Patrick Allen. Johnson is a great cover corner that can tackle, meanwhile Patrick Allen is the intercepting corner out of their backfield. Cirs Dishman didn't have an oustanding statistical year with only 1 interception and 36 tackles. But his 15 deflections showed how well he can cover the pass. Adv: - Oilers
                                • Safties - The Eagles are led by two feared safties in Wes Hopkins and Andre Waters. Meanwhile there backups could even be starters on the Oilers with the likes of William Frizzell and Terry Hoage. The Oilers safties consist of Bubba McDowell at free, and Terry Kinard at strong. McDowell has been having an exceptional year for himself with 83 tackles, and 17 pass deflections, a team lead. Adv: - Eagles
                                • Kickers - Roger Ruzek has struggled all year long for the Eagles, but has picked it up a little in the playoffs, but is still a question mark for this Eagles franchise. In the regular season Ruzek made only 28 of his 43 kicks, for an awful 65% completion rate. The Houston Oilers were blessed this year with some solid kicking by Teddy Garcia. Garcia was only called on for 21 kicks, of which he nailed 17 giving him an 80% completion rate. The only downside is that he had 1 extra point blocked, and shanked another. Hopefully that won't come into affect in the big game. Adv: - Oilers
                                • Punter - Probably one of the positions that you don't want to see on the field often in the big game. The Eagles have a young guy in Jeff Feagles who kicked a 43.7 per punt average during the regular season with 28 inside the 20. However Greg Montgomery got the better of him with his 44.1 per punt average and 32 punts inside the 20 in 1 less total attempts. Adv: - Oilers

                                Advantage: Oilers +1

                                Coach's Corner
                                ==========================================
                                Coach: Oilers - Jack Pardee
                                Gameplan
                                1. Sean Jones and William Fuller are going to have to hustle to keep Cunningham within the hashes. We can't let him run wild on us. So far this year he hasn't, but that doens't mean he won't, could just be waiting for the right moment.
                                2. Warren Moon has to get established. Last week was not a good game for him. We can't risk loosing and play as close a game as we had against San Diego.
                                3. Anthony Toney has run very well in the playoffs so far. Too well in fact. We're going to have to focus on shutting him down big-time.
                                4. If Johnson had a game like he had last week than this is in the bag. Let's see how he and Cris Dishman do covering the rookies Williams and Barnett.
                                5. Our offensive line is going to have to contain the Eagles defensive line. With Reggie White and Clyde Simmons it's going to be no easy task.

                                Coach:Eagles - Buddy Ryan
                                Gameplan
                                1. We'll surprise them by giving the ball to Toney often. They'll probably expect us to pass more like all teams have this playoff season, but Toney should be able to scorch them like he has in the past.
                                2. Keith Jackson could become a big key part of our passing game working against the Oiler's linebackers. Hopefully Williams and Barnett won't get frazzled in the big-game, and they'll contribute, but Jackson should be an easy target for us to hit.
                                3. Reggie White and Clyde Simmons need to get pressure and shake up Warren Moon early. We saw how affective it was when San Diego did it last week, we must keep him on his toes.
                                4. Hopefully this thing won't come down to Ruzek's leg. I may be more inclined to go for it on 4th and shorts the way he's been kicking this year.
                                5. Allen, Smith, Lilly, Hopkins, and Waters all have their work cut out for them against the huge wide receiver sets that Houston loves to run. We must find a way to cut the shoot out of the run and shoot offense that Houston desires.
