Left: Introducing the 14-4 Houston Oilers in there first ever super bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXV!
Right: The game definately started off the way Warren Moon didn't want it to. Shades of last week's horrible performance start to loom here as Ben Smith manages to intercept this Warren Moon pass on the Oilers opening drive of the night.

Left: Roger RUzek pounds this kick, but put too much stank on it as it easily gets the 41 yard distance, but is wide right.
Right: Backup runningback, Lorenzo White, actually took the first successfull pass catch of the night for the Oilers on this 15 yard route.

Left: However this drive would have a similar appearnce to the previous as Warren Moon tossed up another interception on this bomb attempt. The ball was picked off by Eric Allen and returned 89 yards! He was barely caught from behind at the Oilers own 9 yard line to end the opening quarter of the super bowl without a score on the board.
Right: However that quickly changed as on the next few plays Anthony Toney managed to puncture into the endzone with this 1 yard touchdown run to put the Eagles ahead 7 to nothing.

Left: Mike Rozier does his best impression of "I Can Do Anything You Can Do Better!" on the next Oilers drive. Here he managed to find a huge hole in the defense and blast up the middle for a 65 yard touchdown run. The suprising carry would tie the game up at 7 a piece with 9:34 left in the first half.
Right: In a game with two of the best quarterbacks in the game a surprising amount of running had been developed. Here Anthony Toney manages to break through a weak Richard Johnson tackle attempt, and then outpaces the following defender. Toney's 39 yard touchdown scamper would put the Eagles back on top, 14 to 7.

Left: Teddy Garcia uses his reliable leg as he has all season long for Houston on their next drive. This 39 yard field goal would make it 14 to 10, Philly at the half.
Right: Despite a valiant goal line stand attempt by Houston, Randall Cunningham managed to sneak this play into the endzone on 3rd and inches at the goal. Sean Jones came in with a well placed hit that would've appeared to stop Cunningham. But Cunningham managed to reach over Jones head with the football and have it cross the plane for the score. The Eagles would take a commanding 21 to 10 lead in the 3rd.

Left: Haywood Jeffries manages to make this wide open catch in the corner of the endzone, finally ending Warren Moon's touchdown slump. The play couldn't have come at a better time for Moon, as it would end essentially end the 3rd quarter (1:05 remaining) on a good note for the Oilers as they pulled within a manageable 21 to 17 trail.
Right: It wasn't until the final 24 seconds of the game that Warren Moon managed to his his favorite receiver once more. This 14 yard touchdown pass to Haywood Jeffries uplifted the Oilers spirits as it would appear they had just sealed victory in their first ever Super Bowl apperance.

Left: Yet the Oilers didn't expect the unexpected as Randall Cunningham went to work with a mere 24 seconds remaining on the clock. Cunningham tossed a couple quick passes for 15-20 yard gains and took two timeouts leaving just enough time for one more play.
Right: In the final play of Super Bowl XXV you could witness the cheerfull glee of Oilers players celebrating on the sidelines with 4 seconds remaining and a 24 to 21 lead. Warren Moon was seen hugging Jack Pardee as their coach was doused with Gatorade. The Oilers had come from behind late in the game and put in a touchdown to put them over to be Super Bowl XXV champions....but wait... those measly 4 seconds would be the bane of Houston's exsistence as Randall Cunningham managed to lob a 41 yard bomb to rookie receiver, Fred Barnett. Barnett would make the catch in the endzone for the game winning touchdown! 28 to 24 Philadelphia.

Left: A surprised Buddy Ryan got doused with water soon after as Cunningham and Smith snuck up behind him.
Right: Buddy Ryan and his Philadelphia Eagles celebrate, holding up the Super Bowl trophy. Many of them can hardly believe the picture perfect ending that they were gifted with tonight. A solid fight from Houston made it one of the most memorable Super Bowls in NFL history, and with it's spectacular ending, maybe even the best. But that is something only history can permit. And we're here, re-writting it every step of the way.

AP - The Philadelphia Eagles are your new Super Bowl Champions! Led by Randall Cunningham the Eagles managed to halt a near-perfect Houston Oiler comeback last week in the final play of the game. The XXV hype lived up to it's name with the astonishing finisher that will be talked about for ages. The Eagles came out firing, and never stopped. Houston came out limp and then picked it up as the game went on. In the end that appeared to be the difference maker as an excited Houston Oiler team letup with only 24 seconds reamining in the game, and as a result, let their rings go with it. A couple of the Eagles players were reached for comment a few fleeting moments after the game ended.
"Wooo! Super Bowl Champs baby, i'm goin' to Disney World!!! Oh this is the all-time high right here, this is what my teammates and I have been fighting for all year long, and it feels good to reach our goal. I can't tell you how happy I am. We just went out there today and got things done. I played at my best and boy did my team ever play at their best. That final pass will go down as the greatest moment in my career. I hope Barnett sticks around for a long time as well, i'm sure as a rookie he's overwhelmed at the moment. AY!!! FREDDIE!! My man!! **Walks away from mic's**
      ~R.Cunningham

The following day a parade was held in downtown Philadelphia as the teammates were propped on floats and celebrated their way through the streets. Buddy Ryan was seen riding on the defensive player float, and in a fit of elation, attempted to dance, as many coaches in past parades have. Needless to say, he shouldn't think about quitting his dayjob.

          --------------------------------------------

Left: Randall Cunningham continues his Super Bowl momentum on the 2nd play of the game. Here Cunningham rifles a football deep down field to Buccaneers wide receiver, Mark Carrier. Carrier blazes 72 yards for the touchdown.
Right: The NFC got their ground game going early with Neal Anderson of the Chicago Bears. Anderson busted through a Prior attempted tackle and scorched turf 23 yards to the endzone. The touchdown would give hte NFC a commanding 14 to 0 lead.

Left: Thurman Thomas didn't run well at all today, but he did get the yards where it counted most, the goalline. Here, thanks to some solid blocks on Reggie White, Daniel Stubbs, and Kevin Greene, Thomas easily jogs into the endzone from 2 yards out to give the AFC their first score of the night, and make it 14 to 7 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Right: Eddie Murray of the Detroit Lions proved why he was the best kicker in the NFC this season by placing this 21 yarder through the uprights.

Left: Gary Anderson ended the Pro Bowls' 1st half with a 38 yard field goal. The AFC would be content going into the half down 17 to 10.
Right: Dave Krieg couldn't get things going offensively for the NFC as he threw this intercepted pass to Steelers cornerback, Rod Woodson. Woodson would easily run this back 36 yards for the touchdown to cut it close 20 to 17 with the NFC still on top.

Left: Eric Dickerson replaced Thurman Thomas at the runningback spot for the 2nd half. He was a vast improvement over Thomas as he was able to gain 3.9 yards per carry.
Right: Late in teh 4th quarter the AFC had 2 minutes left in the game to try and march downfield and get a score to break a 20-20 tie. However a Burt Grossman sack, followed immediately by a William Perry sack on a 3rd down on Jim Kelly halted the Bills with 56 seconds left in the game. It would appear the NFC had a shot at pulling out the victory.

Left: However things didn't go as the NFC planned in their final drive attempt as Dave Krieg tried to force it to Jerry Rice. Krieg was intercepted for the second time on the night, this one, by Patriots saftey, Fred Marion. Thusly giving the AFC the ball back with 31 seconds left in the game.
Right: Jim Kelly managed to hook up twice with Tim McGee and once with Eric Green to bring the AFC within field goal range, taking a timeout with only 1 second left on the clock. Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Gary Andersons tepped onto the field to attempt this 50 yard field goal. He had already hit one from 51 earlier in the quarter to tie the game, could he do it again? The kick went up and through the uprights as the AFC would go over the NFC 23 to 20 in the final play of the game.

              Chicago Bears Year Report
              ================================================== =
              Coach: Mike Ditka
              Yrs: 9
              Season Record: 7-9
              Overall Record: 79-41 (.658)
Status: Despite a lackluster season, Ditka has too much history with the Bears to be worrying about his job security. There is no doubt taht Ditka will be kept in the off-season as he still has 2 more season left on his contract, and the Bears have no reason for releasing him. Hopefully they can return to glory next year with a bette season.

              Bears Player Standouts
              ---------------------------------------------------------------
              1. - DE - Richard Dent - 71 Tak - 21 Loss - 20 Sack - 3 FF - 2 FR - 6 Deflect - 1 Sfty
Info: Richard Dent had an amazing second half of the season for the Chicago Bears. In Week 12 he had amassed 12 sacks on the year and was looking like the DE to beat. However he really upped the ante in the next game agianst the Vikings where he sacked quarterback Rich Gannon, 6 times. By the season's end Richard Dent led all players with an oustanding 20 sack year. Dent has definately established himself through his actions as the best DE in the league at the moment at the age of 30.

              2. - HB - Neal Anderson - 336 Att - 4.3 Avg - 1,455 Yds - 12 TD - 6 Fum - 45 Rec - 352 Yds - 4 TD
Info: Anderson has been a good runningback for some time now, but this years scoring profeciency was one of the only reasons Chicago was capable of winning 7 games with their lackluster team this season. Anderson's 1,455 yards was near tops in the league. His 16 combined touchdowns were more than Harbaugh threw all year. It is quite obvious who the #1 guy in Chicago is in terms of offense.

              3. - WR - Dennis Gentry - 64 Rec - 10.7 Avg - 688 Yds - 4 TD - 14 KR - 406 Yds - 1 TD - 5 PR - 37 Yds
Info: Dennis Gentry helped the Bears offense go to a different level when he was in. Nobody expected Gentry to pull out the year he did considering how lackluster Harbaugh's performance was. Gentry's 64 catches were just 3 short of the team lead, but he did lead in yards and tied for the team lead in touchdown catches. Despite a murky wide receiver situation with Wendell Davis, Ron Morris, and even Tom Waddle in the mix, Gentry managed to shine by getting more playing time on returns. While Johnny Baily was the main returner it was Gentry who was the one that took it 102 yards to the house on a kick return.

              Bears Player Letdowns
              -------------------------------------------------------------
              1. - QB - Jim Harbaugh - 268 Cmp - 484 Att - 55% - 2,544 Yds - 12 TD - 20 INT - 61.2 RAT
Info After starting for nearly half a season last year for the Bears, they were expecting big things from Harbaugh in his first full-fledged season. However what they got was a mediocre performance that epitomizes the 7-9 record that Chicago ended the season with. While he remained accurate, Harbaugh played rather conservatively only averaging 5.2 yards per pass. His 12 touchdowns were hardly the offensive prowess that they were expecting, and his 20 interceptions certainly didn't help their turnover effeciency.

              2. - FB - Brad Muster - 7 Att - 1.8 Avg - 13 Yds - 0 TD - 1 Rec - 6 Yds - 0 TD
Info: While Muster missed a few games in the regular season, that is still no excuse for his horrible drop off. Chicago was expecting him to really explode out of the backfield helping Anderson progress his run game. Not to mention Harbaugh was going to utilize him often in the flats, but neither came to fruition. In 1989 Muster had 8 touchdowns for the Bears, with 586 combined yards. In a year where he had 19 combined yards and 0 touchdowns, it becomes quite obvious where the flaws in Chicago were this season.

              3. - DE - Trace Armstrong - 40 Tak - 2 Loss - 3 Sack - 2 Deflect
Info: When you set the bar high for yourself your rookie season, it can be a bane as much as it is success. Armstrong had 80 tackles and 5 sacks in his rookie season last year with the Bears. So needless to say the Bears were expecting his sophmore year to be even greater, but weren't expecting the slump that ensued. Armstrong halved his tackles on the year and only recorded 3 sacks all year long. Much worse is he never forced, nor recovered, a single fumble on the line. Armstrong will need to pick it up if he wants to had a future starting in a demanding Chicago defense.

              Bears Review
              -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Chicago Bears have nowhere to go but up form here. While 7-9 is not horrible, it is certainly not something Chicago and their fans are used to at this point.. With a talent like Neal Anderson in your backfield there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to pull out more victories. Mike Ditka will most lilely condition the defense in the off-season who had a disappointing 17th ranked season. With lackluster performances from ShauN Gayle, Trace Armstrong, Pruitt/Morrissey the Bears are looking forward.

                Cincinnati Bengals Year Report
                ================================================== =
                Coach: Sam Wyche
                Yrs: 7
                Season Record: 10-6
                Overall Record: 59-52 (.532)
Status: Wyche may have a hard time living down the 1988 Super Bowl loss to the San Francisco 49ers. However he can still coach with the best of them. Wyche improved from 1989's 8 and 8 year to a 10-6 season with another playoff birth. However due to circumstances not within his control (Injuries to both Boomer Esiason and James Brooks) the Bengals were quickly knocked out of the playoffs. Wyche will be back again for the next season to try and lead his team to a similar season. However this time hoping that his star players are healthy at the right time.

                Bengals Team MVP
                --------------------------------------------------------
                QB - Boomer Esiason

                Bengals Player Standouts
                ---------------------------------------------------------------
                1. - WR - Tim McGee - 74 Rec - 12.8 Avg - 948 Yds - 9 TD
Info: Tim McGee was the go to target for Boomer Esiason all season long. His 9 touchdowns are proof that he makes key catches in key moments. McGee not only played well in the playoffs as well, but even in the Pro Bowl game. McGee will be the Bengals wide receiver to beat for some time now as he is only 26 years old.

                2. - QB - Boomer Esiason - 304 Att - 492 Att - 61% - 3,072 Yds - 26 TD - 18 INT - 81.9 RAT - 5RAtt - 30 Yds - 1 TD
Info: Boomer Esiason continued his stellar play with a solid year for the Bengals. Esiason and company looked poised to take another shot at the Super Bowl going towards the playoffs. However Esiason was hurt in the final game of the season, ending any hopes for Cincinnati's return to the big dance. Esiason's 26 touchdowns were up there in the league ratings, and he certainly deserves the praise he's been getting.

                3. - LB - Kevin Walker - 103 Tak - 8 Loss - 5 Sack - 1 FR - 1 INt - 5 Deflect
Info: Kevin Walker certainly had a standout year leading the Bengals in tackles with 103. His 5 sacks were the most out of their linebacking corps as well Walker did it all in a season that saw him woefully underrated by the mainstream media.

                Bengals Player Letdowns
                -------------------------------------------------------------
                1. - DE - David Grant - 26 Tak - 3 Loss - 2 Sack - 1 Deflect
Info David Grant certainly didn't set the world ablaze with his stat line this season. In fact, Grant's backup, Natu Tuatagaloa, had one more sack than Grant did on the season, and only 8 less tackles. Grant certainly has a lot of work to do if he wants to live up to expectations.

                2. - FB - Harold Green - 36 Att - 3.4 Avg - 124 Yds - 0 TD - 5 Rec - 26 Yds - 1 TD
Info: One touchdown can't erase a horrible season for Harold Green. Eventually, as the season progressed Green was replaced by backup Stanford Jennings who had much better stats than Green. Harold Green has been criticised for not being good enough to play the tailback position, which is why he's been forced into FB. Green supposedly has solid hands that would've helped Cincinnati out of the backfield, however he didn't show anything that would suggest such in the regular season. Green is going to have to step up if he wants to stay in an already crowded Cincinnati backfield.

                3. - C - Bruce Kozerski - 12 Pancakes - 3 Sacks Allowed
Info: Bruce Kozerski was plagued with injuries this year as the Bengals starting center. While he was in he managed to garner 12 pancakes and allowed 3 sacks, but that certainly didn't make up for a lackluster year. Kozerski didn't make much of the time he did have, and therefore Cincinnati is not as pleased with him as they thought they'd be at this time with the 28 year old veteran.

                Bengals Review
                -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Cincinnati Bengals looked like potential favorites going into the playoffs for the AFC. They were hot finishing the year with a victory against the Giants, and the eventual Super Bowl champion Eagles. However due to that final game against the Eagles the Bengals playoff hopes were crushed. With the injuries sustained by both Boomer Esiason and James Brooks the Bengals standed no chance as Erik Wilhelm and Ickey Woods were hardly equivalent. Sam Wyche will definately have this team ready against next year as they'll battle with Steelers once agian for that top spot in the division. We expect them to do big things if Esiason remains healthy like he did for the most part of the season this year.

                  Buffalo Bills Year Report
                  ================================================== =
                  Coach: Marv Levy
                  Yrs: 9
                  Season Record: 12-4
                  Overall Record: 61-66 (.480)
Status: Marv Levy has certainly improved as a coach since leaving Kansas City and joining Buffalo in 1986. This season was another great year out of Buffalo that ended just short of their Super Bowl goal. Levy has reached the end of his original 5 year deal with the Bills, however there is no doubt, due to the recent success that the Bills have obtained, that Levy will be given a new contract by Buffalo this off-season. The only question becomes, for how long?

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Bills Team MVP
                  --------------------------------------------------------
                  HB - Thurman Thomas

                  Bills Player Standouts
                  ---------------------------------------------------------------
                  1. - HB - Thurman Thomas
Info: There's no denying that what Thurman Thomas did offensively this season was one of the greatest regular seasons of any runningback. Thomas managed to garner 1700 yards with a 4.2 average, and 11 rushing touchdowns. But not only that, he was 2nd on the team only to Andre Reed with an astonishing 72 receptions for another 4 touchdowns. With a combined 2,335 yards and 15 touchdowns Thomas became the most valuable player on the Bills offense. However a lackluster playoff performance by Thomas was a large factor in the lack of playoff success that Buffalo witnessed this season.

                  2. - QB - Jim Kelly - 346 of 538 att - 64% - 3,687 yds - 31 td - 15 int - 91.8 Rat
Info: Jim Kelly elevated his playing to an all new level. Kelly was known as a top notch quarterback before this season started, but after this years performance he has shot himself into the upper echleon even further with an oustanding 3,500+ yard 30+ touchdown year. This marks the first season Kelly has accomplished both. If he can keep this level of play over the next few years, there's no question that Kelly could be looking at enshrinement in Ohio by the time his career is complete.

                  3. - LB - Cornelius Bennett - 120 Tak - 9 Loss - 8 Sack - 2 FR - 18 Deflect - 2 Int
Info: Bennett certainly exploded in 1990. In only his 4th season in the league Bennett has amassed 346 tackles, with 120 this year being his career high. He also tacked on his 31.5 th sack of his career. There is no doubt that Bennett has a long illustrious career ahead of him if he combats injury. Bennett established himself as the top linebacker in a convuleted corps of solid players, deservedly earning himself a shot in the Pro Bowl.

                  4. - LB - Darryl Talley - 96 Tak - 6 Loss - 6 Sack - 6 FF - 2 FR - 5 Deflect
Info: Talley, despite being 30 years old, is still a top caliber linebacker in the NFL. The veteran put up solid numbers this year with 96 tackles, second on the Bills team, and a leading 6 forced fumbles. Talley was a productive defensive player that was the reason for the turnover success that Buffalo was gifted with this year. Talley is showing no signs of slowing down and should continue to tear offensive players apart for years to come.

                  Bills Player Letdowns
                  -------------------------------------------------------------
                  1. - FB - Jamie Mueller - 17 att - 27 yds - 0 td
Info Mueller definately didn't play up to expectations this season at all. Mueller in his rookie season of 1987 ran for 354 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 82 carries through the season. While Mueller may have done a decent job of blocking for Thomas all season long, the majority of the success that Thomas saw was due to his own actions and the Bills offensive line. Mueller's paltry 1.5 yards per carry were hardly the 4.2 that he used to average.

                  2. - S - Mark Kelso - 32 Tak - 1 Loss - 1 Sack - 1 FF - 2 FR - 2 INT - 4 Deflect
Info: It felt like Kelso hardly played all season. Now some may see that as a good thing being a Saftey, but it wasn't. Kelso was burned multiple times during the season by wide receivers and didn't defend the pass very well. He may have had 2 floaters go his way, but not enough to warrant a successful season. Kelso will definately have to pick it up for the upcoming years if he wants to keep the strong saftey spot.

                  3. - WR - James Lofton - 61 Rec - 9.8 Avg - 603 Yds - 8 TD - 7 Drop
Info: For a great receiver like James Lofton, 1990 was a disappointing year. Lofton finished his first year in Buffalo, last year, with a 20.8 yard per catch average. Granted he only had 8 due to injury, but prior to that he was always known for catching long passes. Prior to this season his career was blessed with an 18.5 yard per catch average over 607 catches. This one season alone dropped that career average down to 17.7.

                  Bills Review
                  -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Buffalo Bills had a great year that ended with a choke. They were dominate througout the regular season, only loosing 4 times, 3 of which were under 4 points. However when it came to crunch time the Bills couldn't do anything about the Houston Oilers. The 1 point loss in the final 11 seconds of the playoff game sealed the fate for the Bills on a tough year. The only upside was the way they played in the regular season. With the emergence of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed all having career seasons. Meanwhile the defense kept things going with the outstanding linebacking corps of Cornelius Bennett, Darryl Talley, Shane Conlan, and Ray Bentley. All of which had stellar performing seasons. The best thing for the Bills to do this off-season is re-sign their coach, re-sign there key players, and draft some security beind their starters, or potentially find a solid free-agent strong saftey that could elevate where Kelso left off. The future for the Bills is still bright, and they will remain a force to be reckoned with come playoff time, as long as they can keep their trio healthy.

**NOTE: James Lofton's #'s on the individual stats sheet are incorrect, those numbers are Thurman Thomas' receiving numbers. The stat-line in the "Letdowns" portion however are the correct numbers for Lofton.**

                    Denver Broncos Year Report
                    ================================================== =
                    Coach: Dan Reeves
                    Yrs: 10
                    Season Record: 9-7
                    Overall Record: 94-57-1 (.618)
Status: Dan reeves has been coaching the Broncos since 1981 and there are no signs that he'll stop anytime soon. While this season certainly was a drop off from the 11-5 record that Denver posted the previous year, it was in no way Reeves fault. The Broncos just fell victim of a tough division that would see a 10-6 team not even make the playoffs (Chiefs).

                    Broncos Player Standouts
                    ---------------------------------------------------------------
                    1. - WR - Vance Johnson - 94 Rec - 11.2 Avg - 1,058 Yds - 9 TD - 2 Drop
Info: Vance Johnson stepped up this year alongside his partner, Mark Jackson, to become the most reliable target in the NFL. Vance Johnson had the best season of his career in catches and touchdowns, just barely missing his career-yard mark set last season by a mere 37 yards. Johnson's 94 receptions led the NFL in catches, vaulting him int the upper echleon receivers with back-to-back solid years, earning his first Pro Bowl appearance.

                    2. - WR - Mark Jackson - 49 Rec - 13.1 Avg - 646 Yds - 10 TD - 2 Drop
Info: The surprise of the first-half of the season was easily Mark Jackson. Jackson and Johnson were the deadliest wide receiver combination in the league, until Jackson suffered an injury. Jackson missed numerous games in the second half of the season to the chagrin of the Broncos record. However in the games that he did play, Jackson led the league for a period in touchdown receptions with an astonishing 10 in only 49 catches. He was on pace to score over 22 touchdowns on the year before getting hurt. There's no doubt that Denver fans are anxious for next season, to see how a healthy duo of Jackson and Johnson can round out a year like.

                    3. - LB - Simon Fletcher - 86 Tak - 9 Loss - 7 Sack - 1 FF - 2 FR - 13 Deflect
Info: Simon Fletcher proved his versatility this season with an outstanding all-around game. His 86 tackles tied Karl Mecklenburg for the team lead, as did his 7 sacks with Ron Holmes. Fletcher also showed his ability to cover the pass with a solid 13 deflected passes.

                    4. - CB - Tyrone Braxton - 26 Tak - 13 Deflect - 1 Int - 40 KR - 938 Yds - 76 PR - 653 Yds - 1 TD
Info: Tyrone Braxton was all over the field this season for the Broncos as he not only played nickle corner with remarkable ability, deflecting 13 opponent passes throughout the year, picking one off even. But he also gathered 1,591 yards on kick and punt returns, with a 49 yard punt returned for a touchdown.

                    5. - WR - Ricky Nattiel - 55 Rec - 12.5 Avg - 692 Yds - 7 TD - 6 Drop
Info: The only downside to this season for Nattiel was his slight occurance of drop-itus. However, that being said, Nattiel had the best season of his career yet. In his 4th year Nattiel surpassed every statistical catagory including average. The main reason? The injury to Mark Jackson allowing him to finally get a shot at the #2 slot behind Vance Johnson.

                    Broncos Player Letdowns
                    -------------------------------------------------------------
                    1. - MLB - Karl Mecklenburg - 86 Tak -3 Loss - 4 Sack - 1 FF - 1 FR - 4 Deflect - 1 INT - 2 Safties
Info The fact that Mecklenburg's season was seen as a let down for Denver is more a factor for him being such a solid middle linebacker, rather then having a bad year. If he was 75% of the other league's MLB's this would be a good year, but not for Mecklenburg. HIs palty 86 tackles was tied with Simon Fletcher for the team lead, but nowhere near the triple-digit expectations. Mecklenburg only knocked and pulled in a single fumble on the year, and exposed his lack of ability in covering the pass this season.

                    2. - HB - Bobby Humphrey - 244 Att - 3.7 Avg - 925 Yds - 3 TD - 3 Fumble - 34 Rec - 8.4 Avg - 288 Yds
Info: Humphrey disappointed after his solid rookie season. Humphrey put up 1,151 yards, with a 3.9 average and 7 touchdowns his rookie year. While this year was different as Humphrey was unable to crack the 1k mark in yards, and had an abysmal 3 scores compared to last seasons 8 total. He did improve in his pass catching but not to a point to elevate the overall year he had. Humphrey expressed himself saying he personally was disappointed with this season as he believes he is capable of much more. However the game of football is not about beliefs, but about action.

                    3. - TE - Clarence Kay - 2 Rec - 12.5 Avg - 25 Yds
Info: Without a doubt the weakest position for the Broncos all year long was the tight end spot. Clarence Kay was nowhere near affective with 1/10th the number of catches he had just one season prior. In fact the horrible play of Clarence Kay and backup O.Mobley has made the Broncos re-think their tight end position, and they may very well stick 7th round 1990 draft pick, Sterling Sharpe into the tight end position for the next season. However it is just merely talk, and Denver hasn't officially gone about such manuevers.

                    Broncos Review
                    -----------------------------------------------------
Review: This will be a tough off-season for the Broncos. This is the year that the Broncos will find out which way their team is headed for the following decade. The Broncos could easily head south with some small tweaks that end up running this team into the ground. If Humphrey doesn't imrpove, or Jackson can't stay healthy, the Broncos may never have a shot to move past their own division. Whether the emergance of Kansas City and San Diego this year has any sort of permanent affect on the upcoming years could be a big factor. Denver needs to get to the basics, re-sign their key players, and perhaps even speculate about a runningback change, and definately find a capable tight end that will catch more than 2 passes.

                      Cleveland Browns Year Report
                      ================================================== =
                      Coach: Bud Carson
                      Yrs: 2
                      Season Record: 7-9
                      Overall Record: 16-15-1 (.516)
Status: Even though Carson certainly didn't wring out a horrible year from the Browns, it still was a season that finished in the wrong direction from the previous year. The vaunted Browns ownership may actually take a close look at what Carson did because unfortunately for Bud he only had a 2 year deal with Cleveland which ends this off-season. With the 2 win regression for Cleveland there could be a very high possibility that Carson does not return to coach the Browns next year, healthy Kosar or not.

                      Browns Individual Player Statistics
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Browns Team MVP
                      --------------------------------------------------------
                      HB - Leroy Hoard

                      Browns Player Standouts
                      ---------------------------------------------------------------
                      1. - HB - Leroy Hoard - 333 Att - 3.9 Avg - 1,311 Yds - 13 TD - 4 Fum - 36 Rec - 8.3 Avg - 302 Yds - 1 TD - 1 Drop
Info: Leroy Hoard was robbed of the Rookie of the Year award. Dallas' larger market was the only factor that allowed Emmitt Smith to pull the award out of Hoard's mitts. Hoard was outstanding this year. His 3.9 average led his team as he smashed his way for 1,311 yards on the ground and an amazing, league leading, 13 touchdowns on the ground. With an extra caught pass to add to his year. Hoard was a rare bright spot in a disappointed Cleveland team.

                      2. - ROLB - Clay Matthews - 120 Tak - 9 Loss - 10 Sack - 6 FF - 3 FR - 6 Deflect
Info: Matthews was 8th in the NFL in total tackles, and 2nd in forced fumbles only to Tim Harris. Matthews had his 5th Pro Bowl season this year, leading a Cleveland Brown defense. His 10 sacks were detrimental to the Browns defensive success.

                      3. - S - Thane Gash - 112 Tak - 7 Loss - 4 Sack - 5 FF - 1 FR - 1 INT - 14 Deflect
Info: Thane Gash is a rare saftey that can not only pair a great tackling ability, solid rushing ability, and coverage ability into one, but he is one smart guy. Gash's ability to commandeer the gridiron makes him a valuable asset to the Browns. Gash's 112 tackles were 2nd on the team, as were his 5 forced fumbles, a key to Cleveland's success in creating turnovers.

                      4. - HB - Eric Metcalf - 113 Att - 3.6 Avg - 418 Yds - 1 TD - 5 Fum - 6 Rec - 36 Yds - 49 KR - 21.6 Avg - 1,063 Yds - 53 PR - 11.3 Avg - 599 Yds - 1 TD
Info: Eric Metcalf had 2,116 combined yards this season for the Cleveland Browns. There is no doubt that he is had a great year with his 1,063 kick return yards and 599 punt return yards. Metcalf also found himself subbing in for rookie Leroy Hoard a few times, to some solid success with a 3.6 average and 418 yards on the ground. Metcalf's versatility is hard to match.

                      5. - CB - Frank Minnifield - 40 Tak - 5 Int - 20 Deflect
Info: Frank Minnifield prooved why he is considered one of the league's better corenrbacks this season. The 30 year old put up a stellar season that saw him lead his team with 5 interceptions. However his most impressive ability was the ability to shut down receivers as he had 20 deflections throughout the year. Only Terry McDaniel of the Los Angeles Raiders had more deflections than Minnifield (21).

                      Browns Player Letdowns
                      -------------------------------------------------------------
                      1. - QB - Mike Pagel - 155 of 285 Att - 54% - 1,495 Yds - 5 TD - 15 Int - 53.2Rat
Info Bernie Kosar was playing great up until his injury, which may have been what made Mike Pagel's season such a let down for Browns fans. The Browns finished 7-9, but without a doubt would've had a realistic shot at the playoffs with Bernie Kosar behind the helm thanks to all their surprises this year. Pagel however, should've played much better in Kosar's absence than he did. Pagel had a horrible 1 touchdown to 3 interceptions ratio that earned him a 53.2 quarterback rating. The Browns passing game was the worst in the league when deducting Bernie Kosar's starts. There's no doubt that the Browns can do better than 7-9 if Pagel was able to get them there with his playing.

                      2. - TE - Ozzie Newsome - 29 Rec - 6.7 Avg - 197 Yds
Info: This year was hardly the way one would've wanted to see potential hall of fame tight end, Ozzie Newsome, leave the league. There's not much doubt that the 35 year old Newsome will probably be hanging up his cleats this off-season, and the reason is evident in his stat line. Newsome's 6.7 average, while not entirely his fault with the quarterback situation, certainly was not up to par.

                      3. - DE - Anthony Pleasant - 1 Tackle
Info: The Browns weren't pleased with the performance of their 3rd round selection, Anthony Pleasant. Pleasant had many plays given to him during the season, however was only able to rack up a single tackle statistically. Hopefully this won't be a sign that he is a bust of a pick, there's still time for him to develop, however he'll have to perform much better when given the opportunity if he wants to be remembered.

                      4. - K - Jerry Kauric - 25 of 38 FG - 65% - 0 Blk - 25 of 25 XP - 100%
Info: When the best thing you have going for you as a kicker is that you didn't miss an extra point, you know you must not be very good. Kauric was picked up here to play his first ever NFL season, and what a disappointing year it was. A horribly 65% completion rate for Kauric could very well spell his doom kicking as that is unacceptable. Kauric will most likely find himself packing his bags this off-season as Cleveland searches for a capable Kicker.

                      Browns Review
                      -----------------------------------------------------
Review: Unfortunately the Cleveland Browns season was lost due to the injury of one player for the season, Bernie Kosar. Kosar had 816 yards, 7 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions when he began the year. Meanwhile the breakout year of rookie Leroy Hoard will most certainly get more media blitz next season as Kosar returns healthy, making the Browns a solid choice to run with the crown in their division. With a solid defensive lineup of Matthews, Johnson, Gash, Wright, and Michael Dean Perry, the Browns could easily find themselves reversing their record next season and sneaking into the playoffs.

                        Tampa Bay Buccaneers Year Report
                        ================================================== =
                        Coach: Ray Perkins
                        Yrs: 8
                        Season Record: 10-6
                        Overall Record: 47-73 (.392)
Status: Ray Perkins certainly doesn't have the most illustrious record as a coach. After spending 4 years with the Giants from 1979 to 1982 he amassed a single winning season with a 9-7 bout in 1981. The past three years for Tampa have seen nothing near that kind of record. However things finally turned for the better, and at the right moment as he's in his final year of his contract. Perkins surprise 10-6 season took the NFL by storm as nobody expected to see the Tampa Bay Yucks make it that far. With that being said, it is still shaky as to whether this 10-6 season makes up for a combined 14-33 previous three. The Buccaneers were on fire in the second half o the season, once November 11th hit they went 7-1 to finish out the year, marking the best 8 week period in franchise history, including the longest win streak in franchise history with 5 games in a row.

                        Buccaneers Team MVP
                        --------------------------------------------------------
                        WR - Mark Carrier

                        Buccaneers Player Standouts
                        ---------------------------------------------------------------
                        1. - WR - Mark Carrier - 80 Rec - 13.5 Avg - 1,088 Yds - 6 TD - 1 Drop
Info: Mark Carrier showed reliable hands in only his fourth season in the NFL. Carrier followed up last years career year as the Buccaneers #1 receiver with an equally well off year. Carrier once again led the Buccaneers in catches, yards, and touchdowns for a receiver, earning him his 2nd consecutive Pro Bowl appearance. Carrier is without a doubt the Buccaneers team MVP, and the main reason Tampa Bay finished the year with a surprising 4th ranked passing offense.

                        2. - LOLB - Winston Moss - 89 Tackle - 10 Loss - 9 Sack - 2 FF - 3 FR - 16 Deflect - 1 INT
Info: Despite suffering an Injury Winston Moss could be seen all over the field this season. Moss' 89 tackles led the Buccaneers doing slightly better than Harry Hamilton. He also led the team in sacks with an outstanding 9 sack season. Winston Moss utilized his speed to help the Buccaneers defend against the pass, as was evident by his team leading 16 deflections. If there's a statistical catagory for the Buccaneers, most likely, Winston Moss led it this year despite missing a few games.

                        3. - HB - Gary Anderson - 292 Att - 3.2 Avg - 943 Yds - 4 TD - 1 FUM - 36 Rec - 8.4 Avg - 305 Yds - 1 TD
Info: Gary Anderson had a great year, comparable to his 1988 breakout season, just one year after not carrying a single ball. His shutout 1989 season was dealt with this year as Anderson led the Buccaneers backfield. Anderson was very effecient as he only fumbeled the ball a single time during the regular season. Anderson prooved that he can bring himself back to the precedent he set in 1988 with this output, while not spectacular by league comparisons, it was a personal victory for the Buccaneers.

                        4. - CB - Wayne Haddix - 50 Tak - 1 Loss - 1 FR - 12 Deflect - 5 INT
Info: Wayne Haddix and the Buccaneeers secondary surprised the nation by leading the league with the best pass defense. Nobody saw that coming, but a large part of it was thanks to Haddix. Haddix 5 interceptions led the team, and his 12 deflections showed his commitment to batting the ball away from opponent's.

                        Buccaneers Player Letdowns
                        -------------------------------------------------------------
                        1. - HB - Reggie Cobb - 45 Att - 2.1 Avg - 98 Yds - 1 FUM - 5 Rec - 20 Yds
Info The Buccaneers expected a little more out of their draft pick, Reggie Cobb. Cobb's horrible 2.1 average was the lowest on the team. 98 yards on 45 attempts is never going to be acceptable. He'll have to pick it up if he ever wants to compete in this league.

                        2. - LB - Kevin Murphy - 43 Tak - 6 Loss - 3 Sack - 1 FF - 2 FR - 3 Deflect - 2 INT
Info: The only reason the Buccaneers were disappointed with Kevin Murphy's performance was that he couldn't stay healthy. Instead he spent time swapping with Broderick Thomas due to some nagging injuries. However hopefully next year he can stay healthy and Tampa will be able to see what he is truely capable of.

                        3. - LG - Carl Bax - 26 Pancakes - 10 Sacks Allowed
Info: Carl Bax let the 2nd most amount of sacks go through the line on the team (Grimes, 11) with only half the pancakes that Randy Grimes aquired. Carl Bax had a disappointing year by his standards. The 24 year old is also apparently in some off-field trouble. Recently some leaked information was let out and rumours abound are flying that Bax may be in some legal trouble. The reason for the matter has not been disclosed yet, however that is certainly not the cherry you want on a lackluster cake of a season.

                        Buccaneers Review
                        -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a big surprise this season. However the lackluster play of the New Orleans Saints, and the key injuries to the Atlanta Falcons quarterback position seemed to solidify a solid year. There 3-5 start left many people thinking "Those same 'ol Bucs". However a solid 7-1 finish saw the Buccaneers actually make there first playoff appearance. In fact the Buccaneers nearly pulled out the victory in a close match against Seattle. I"m unsure wheather the Buccaneers will be able to return next year with a season of this status, especially their defense. There are still a lot of holes that need fixing for the Buccaneers to be considered a top team, and not just a one-year wonder.

                          Phoenix Cardinals Year Report
                          ================================================== =
                          Coach: Joe Bugal
                          Yrs: 1
                          Season Record: 7-9
                          Overall Record: 7-9 (.437)
Status: Joe Bugal put up a valiant effort in his first ever head coaching experience. Many people were skeptical about his abilities to coach the Phoenix Cardinals, but he did well with his 7-9 record. After a rough start a solid 6-1 record through weeks 9 to 15 really helped Bugal and the Cardinals shine. Injuries to Johnson, Thimpson, and Proehl didn't help matters, but the Cardinals may be looking up in the future thanks to their new headcoach and young talent. Bugal may have found himself a solid team to bring into a prestigious era that they have not witnessed for some time.

                          Cardinals Player Standouts
                          ---------------------------------------------------------------
                          1. - HB - Johnny Johnson - 249 Att - 3.2 Avg - 817 Yds - 7 TD - 3 Fum - 3 Rec - 11.0 Avg - 33 Yds
Info: Rookie Johnny Johnson impressed the Cardinals as he split carries with Anthony Thompson throughout the year. However near the end of the season Johnson started to pull away, while both Johnson and Thompson averaged the same yards per carry, 3.2, Johnson's ability to get to the endzone prooved far greater. Johnson's 7 touchdowns on the ground dwarfed Thompson's singular rushing touchdown. Johnson may not have the best hands for a runningback coming out of the backfield, but his ability to pick up the blitz, and his 817 yard 7 touchdown rookie year have the Cardinals looking forward to his development. Will Johnson be the runningback that ends the Cardinals HB woes as of late?

                          2. - SS - Tim McDonald - 104 Tack - 8 Loss - 7 Sack - 1 FF - 4 FR - 3 Int - 14 Deflect
Info: Tim McDonald did it all on defense for the Phoenix Cardinals this year. HIs 104 tackles lead the team, while his 7 sacks only fell one short of the team leader, Ken Harvey. He led the team in fumbles recovered with 4 and was one deflection behind the lead with an oustanding 14 deflections. There is no doubt that McDonald's trip to the Pro Bowl this season was well deserved.

                          3. - LB - Ken Harvey - 96 Tak - 12 Loss - 8 Sack - 5 FF - 1 FR - 7 Deflect
Info: The Phoenix Cardinals have an amazing set of linebackers, who were led this year by Ken Harvey. Harvey's 96 tackles was second on the team behind Tim McDonald, but he led the team with 12 tackles for a loss, and 8 sacks, as well as his outstanding 5 forced fumbles. Harvey was a big difference maker for the Cardinals defense this year.

                          4. - LB - Eric HIll - 73 Tack - 7 Loss - 6 Sack - 2 FR - 5 Int - 7 Deflect
Info: Eric HIll, another solid Cardinal linebacker, surprised this year, but not because of his tackling or sacking ability, but because of his pass protection. Hill managed to be 2nd on the team with 5 interceptions, just one shy.

                          5. - RT/RG - Tootie Robbins/Lance Smith - 60/52 Pancakes - 4/6 Sacks Allowed
Info: The right side of the Cardinals offensive line was the big surprise of 1990. Tootie Robbins and Lance Smith weren't expected to have the monster seasons that they did, which landed both players in the Pro Bowl. Between the two they combined for 112 pancakes with only 10 sacks allowed.

                          Cardinals Player Letdowns
                          -------------------------------------------------------------
                          1. - WR - J.T. Smith - 67 Rec - 9.3 Avg - 629 Yds - 3 TD - 4 Drop
Info As J.T. Smith ages it's becoming obvious that the 35 year old receiver is on the tail end of his solid career. After peaking just 3 years ago there has been a steady decline in his ability. While he did have 5 more catches this year than last year his averaged dropped 3.2 yards per catch and he had 2 less touchdowns. Smith was not his old 12+ yard per catch self this season in which Roy Greens surpassed him as the #1 receiver for the Cardinals.

                          2. - LE - Dexter Manley - 36 Tak - 2 Loss - 3 Sack - 1 FF - 4 Deflect
Info: Dexter Manley didn't light it up like in the past. This aging defeinsive lineman only accounted for 3 sacks on the year, a definate disappointment for the Cardinals.

                          3. - WR - Ricky Proehl - 18 Rec - 9.9 Avg - 179 Yds - 1 TD - 2 Drop
Info: Young rookie Ricky Proehl was slated to have a solid year as the Cardinals #3 receiver, however injuries cut him down and Ernie Jones took his place. Proehl only got to show a little bit of his ability, but couldn't shake off that transitional rust as he just averaged underneath 10 yards per catch. Next season a healthy Proehl could make the Cardinals a much better pass team.

                          Cardinals Review
                          -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Phoenix Cardinals may not have made it to the playoffs, or had a winning season, but overall this year was seen as a success in the eyes of the lowered fan expectations. A rookie head coach along with a rookie starting runningback both performed well enough to garner some respect. Bugel might have this Phoenix team competing within a few short seasons. The major downside is the lackluster offensive performance by Timmm Rosenbach, so the Cardinals may have to remedy that in the draft or free agency if they can. Meanwhile two aging receivers in Roy Green and J.T. Smith are going to cause them to seek out the help of non-injury prone youngsters at the reciever position. The Cardinals defense will remain solid, as team MVP Tim McDonald will lead the way, meanwhile their oustanding linebacking corps continues to go underrated. All 4 of the Cardinals starting linebackers managed to get 69 or more tackles on the year, and combined for 18 sacks. Now if only they could get more help up front with the uninspiring play of Freddie Joe Nunn and Dexter Manley not adequately tightening things up.

                            San Diego Chargers Year Report
                            ================================================== =
                            Coach: Dan Henning
                            Yrs: 6
                            Season Record: 12-4
                            Overall Record: 40 - 55 (.421)
Status: Dan Henning really picked things up in his 2nd season as the Chargers head coach. After four horrible years in Atlanta from 1983 to 1986, Henning saw himself back in the head coaching spot in 1989 for San Diego, leading to a lackluster 6-10 year. Things were looking like the old days for Henning, but this season changed that as his Chargers team put together a 12-4 season that saw them go deep in the playoffs. Henning has only next season left on his contract, so whether or not he is resigned by San Diego may fall on next years outcome to proove whether 1990 was just a fluke season for the decidedly below average coach.

                            Chargers Player Standouts
                            ---------------------------------------------------------------
                            1. - QB - Mark Vlasic - 231 of 405 att - 57% - 2,470 yds - 18 td - 8 int - 81.6 rat
Info: The San Diego Chargers did not have high expectations going into the season. Why? Well contract dispute issues with Billy Joe Tolliver saw him sitting out after playing just one game. With a career long backup in Mark Vlasic, who's played in only 3 games since he was drafted in 1987, and a rookie John Friesz backing up, things were looking bleak. However nobody expected the amazing seaso out of Mark Vlasic. Vlasic had one of the most effecient seasons of any starting quarterback as he tossed for 2,470 yards with 18 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions through his played games. Vlasic really stepped things up and helped San Diego become more than a one-dimensional running team, which in the end even helped out Marion Butts. The only downside to the amazing 12-4 season that Vlasic led his team to was his injury that he suffered in the final regular season game. The injury would knock Vlasic out of the playoff run, putting it in the hands of 3rd string rookie, John Friesz, who valiantly tried but couldn't get it done. If Vlasic can remain healthy next year, the future of Tolliver in San Diego may be bleak.

                            2. - HB - Marion Butts- 372 att - 4.2 avg - 1,565 yds - 10 td - 6 fum - 32 rec - 9.3 avg - 299 yds - 3 td
Info: In only his second season Marion Butts placed himself among some top-notch names in terms of runningbacks. After aquiring 683 yards and 9 touchdowns last season in a split-role San Diego decided to take a chance and put the 2nd year youngster in the starting spot all year, and boy did it pay off. Butt's 1,565 yards shattered franchise records as he even scampered his way to 10 rushing and 3 receiving touchdowns, becoming the dominant member of San Diego's offense. If Butts can remain as affective next year, proving this season was more than a fluke, San Diego may be on the up.

                            3. - LB - Leslie O'Neal - 112 Tak - 12 Loss - 12 Sack - 4 FF - 4 FR - 3 INT - 15 Deflect - 1 TD
Info: Leslie O'Neal deservedly put together a second straight Pro Bowl appearance season as he led San Diego's talented linebacking corps with 112 tackles and also led with his 12 sacks. O'Neal utilized his speed rushing ability to be all over the field this year, terrorizing opposing offenses all season long.

                            4. - LB - Junior Seau - 109 Tak - 6 Loss - 3 Sack - 4 FF - 1 FR - 7 Deflect
Info: For a rookie Junior Seau really pulled out the stops. Seau was second on the team with 109 tackles and even showed off his ability to defend the pass by deflecting 7 passes that came in his direction. Without a doubt if his rookie season was any indication of the future, Seau will be a star in no-time.

                            5. - WR - Quinn Early - 68 Rec - 12.2 Avg - 835 Yds - 7 TD - 10 Drop
Info: Despite a slight drop problem Quinn Early had the best year of his career in his 3rd season in 1990. Early had more receptions, yards, and touchdowns then the past two years totals combined. When Anthony Miller went down with an injury Early was quick to step in and take off where he left off. As a result Vlasic didn't loose a beat and the Chargers passing game continued unfaultered.

                            6. - WR - Nate Lewis - 30 Rec - 6.5 Avg - 196 Yds - 1 TD - 4 Drop - 46 KR - 24.5 Avg - 1,128 Yds - 81 PR - 10.5 Avg - 855 Yds - 2 TD
Info: Nate LEwis may not have had an amazing impact as a wide receiver for San Diego, but he utilized his speed to the full extent as the teams kick and punt returner. Nate Lewis earned himself a trip to the Pro Bowl with his 2,179 total yards and 3 touchdowns, 2 on punt returns.

                            Chargers Player Letdowns
                            -------------------------------------------------------------
                            1. - QB - Billy Joe Tolliver - 39 of 80 - 48% - 372 Yds - 4 TD - 2 Int - 68.3 Rat
Info The way in which Tolliver was quick to turn his back on the San Diego franchise has deeply left them in a dillemma. The only upside to the incident is that it allowed them to fully realize the potential of Mark Vlasic, but at what cost? The morale hit that Tolliver caused, and the obvious shaking up of the offensive system may have long lasting affects that will go largely unnoticed by the general public.

                            2. - K - Fuad Reveiz - 29 of 45 FG - 64% - 1 Blk - 38 of 38 XP - 100%
Info: Fuad Reveiz was the worst player on San Diego's offense with no reserve. His horrible 64% field goal completion rate is unacceptable, and he'll be lucky to find himself suiting up for any team next season, let alone San Diego.

                            3. - CB - Gill Byrd - 35 Tak - 1 Loss - 1 Sack - 2 Int - 7 Deflect
Info: Byrd definately did not have the kind of season you would expect from a top notch corner. His paltry 2 interceptions were still somehow 2nd on the team, but his 7 deflections showed just how often he had been capitalized on by other teams this year. Byrd will need to really help next season to keep the defense playing tight.

                            4. - CB - Sam Seale - 24 Tak - 1 FF - 2 FR - 3 Int - 15 Deflect
Info: Sam Seale still put up decent numbers in the deflection range proving he could recover receivers at a high potential. However his team-leading 3 interceptions is simply not a high enough number to be respected. Not to mention he only made 24 tackles.

                            Chargers Review
                            -----------------------------------------------------
Review: Whether or not the San Diego Chargers are the real deal, or merely a fluke team this season has yet to be determined. However with a 12-4 record that benefited from 3 no contests in an 11-1 winning run through Week 1 to 13 may have helped. In non-no contest performances San Diego won 6 by less than 5 points. That makes a total of 9 questionable out of 12 victories. Next season will definately be an interesting one as we can establish whether or not San Diego is a true competitor. The one thing that can not be denied is the rising star talent of San Diego's youngsters. Whether it's linebacker Junior Seau tacklin' his way to the rookie of the year award, or young Marion Butts barelling through defenders on his way to a franchise record 1,565 yards. It was all in all a magical season for a San Diego team. If Vlasic and Miller can remain helathy next year the tables might be turned in the playoffs and we could easily see San Diego being catapulted into the big dance.

                              Kansas City Chiefs Year Report
                              ================================================== =
                              Coach: Marty Schottenheimer
                              Yrs: 7
                              Season Record: 10-6
                              Overall Record: 62 - 40 (.608)
Status: Marty Schottenheimer enjoyed a solid sophmore season with the Kansas City Chiefs. After five solid years in Cleveland he's continuing his good coaching into the new decade. Last year Marty finished a disappointg 8-7-1, and improved that record by 2 victories in this season. However a tough AFC output this year saw the Chiefs not go to the playoffs. Marty has lined that out as his new goal for the next season, and with the talent on the rsoter he should be able to do it. There are no signs of any distress in Kansas City for Marty, and with his coaching and the upcoming young talent on the Chiefs roster, and perhaps a few veteran aquisitions in future off-seasons, could mean that Marty will have a home in Kansas City for quite some time.

                              Chiefs Player Standouts
                              ---------------------------------------------------------------
                              1. - HB - Christian Okoye - 369 att - 5.1 avg - 1,885 yds - 9 td - 5 fm - 22 rec - 10.6 avg - 235 yds
Info: Last year Christian Okoye broke out with his 1,480 yard 12 touchdown performance. However many were wondering if the nigerian monster could keep his pace into the next year. And he definately proved that he could this season. Okoye left this year as the team's MVP with him garnering 1,885 yards on 1 less carry than he had the previous season. A 1.1 yard per carry bump from 1989. Okoye had only 56 yards less then the team's leading quarterback, Steve Pelluer (1,941), and just as many touchdowns (9). There is no doubt that Okoye IS the Chiefs offense. His 1,885 yards were very close to putting him in the elusive 2000 yard club, of which only O.J. Simpson and Eric Dickerson are members. Had he not split 196 carries with Barry Word there is no doubt he would've surpased it, even if he only got 1 yard per carry.

                              2. - LB - Derrick Thomas - 114 Tak - 10 Loss - 10 Sack - 3 FF - 4 FR - 13 Deflect
Info: Derrick Thomas could easily be argued as the best rushing linebacker in the league. While he was 2nd on his team with 10 sacks, he gets a boost in versatility as he also added 114 tackles and 13 deflections to his repetoire. Thomas was a monster all over the field defensively, and only in his 2nd season in the game. Making his 2nd straight pro bowl appearance. Thomas led his team in tackles and was very close to pulling out a team MVP award.

                              3. - LB - Chris Martin - 98 Tak - 11 Loss - 11 Sack - 2 FF - 3 FR - 9 Deflect - 2 TD - 2 Safties
Info: Chris Martin had a surprise year with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was overshadowed by the stardom of a young Derrick Brooks and the 100 tackle year of Dino Hackett, but Martin was every bit, if not, more impressive. Martin was 3rd on the team with 98 tackles, but led the team in sacks with an oustanding 11 takedowns. But he also proved to be a key asset in scoring for the Chiefs as he himself accounted for 16 (excluding XP's) of the Chiefs points this year. Martin returned 2 of his 3 fumble recoveries for touchdowns, and he also managed to make 2 of his sacks count with safties! Martin was a powerhouse surprise on a defense where the main focus was Thomas. If Martin continues he may be start overshadowing Derrick.

                              4. - CB - Kevin Ross - 31 Tak - 1 FF - 1 FR - 5 Int - 17 Deflect
Info: Kevin Ross was definately the teams best turnover corner. Albert Lewis may have had more tackles but Ross had a team leading 5 interceptions. He also managed to tie Lewis with 17 deflections, proving he was no slouch in the secondary.

                              5. - OL - Tim Grunhard/John Alt/Rich Baldinger/Dave Lutz/David Szott
Info: The entire Kansas City Chiefs offensive line should get as much recognition for the outstanding year that Christian Okoye had. Grunhard led the way with an amazing 69 pancakes and only 6 sacks allowed. WIth John Alt recoridng 56 pancakes to 4 sacks allowed, and Baldinger also having 56 pancakes but with 6 sacks allowed. Dave Lutz managed a 38 pancake to 2 sacks allowed season marking the lowest allowed of all the starting linemen. The only player that didn't have an oustanding year, but certainly wasn't horrid, was youngster David Szott with his 36 pancake 8 sacks allowed output.

                              6. - HB - Barry Word - 196 Att - 3.6 Avg - 713 Yds - 7 TD - 3 Fum - 1 Rec - 10 Yds
Info: There was a reason Kansas City was the #1 rushing team in the league with 2,691 combined rushing yards. That's because, as a backup, Barry Word still ran the ball 196 times. His 713 yards were only eclipsed in amazement by his 7 touchdowns off of the bench. Word and Okoye comprised the most dangerous rushing duo in the league, and they'll be hard to dethrone as Word still has 2 years left in his contract with Kansas City. Word did express some frustration about having to share and not be the feature back, but said he was wiling to accept it due to the overall success that the team was having. However many people believe Word is merely auditioning for other teams now, as it would appear, barring a sudden change, Christian Okoye is the back of Kansas City's future years.

                              -------------------------------------------------------------
                              1. - QB - Steve Pelluer - 194 of 363 att - 53% - 1,941 yds - 9 td - 6 int - 70.3qb rat
Info Not so much singling out Pelluer as it is singling out the Chiefs passing game. Granted they did pull out the #1 rushing offense and thusly the pass numbers should suffer, but Pelluer was unable to even crack the double digit touchdown mark. Early in the season after two games and 578 yards and 4 touchdowns, Steve DeBerg was injured for the season. As a result a 1 year removed starter (Dallas - 1988), Steve Pelluer took the helm for a 10-6 year. In a way it could be see as a suprise, but statistically Steve did not have a desirable season.

                              2. - DL - Bill Maas - 4 Tak - 1 Loss - 1 Sack - 1 FF
Info: Maas is a great player but for some reason Marty hardly had him in the game all season long. Maas brought a case to the press about his displeasure in not starting, but it went largely unheard throughout the year as the Chiefs success was overshadowing it.

                              3. - K - Nick Lowery - 25 of 35 fg - 71% - 35 of 35 xp - 100% - 77 ko - 13tb
Info: Nick Lowery just posted his 2nd worst field goal percentage year of his career. It wasn't since 1984 (69.7%) that Lowery had this bad of a season. With a 82%+ in 3 of the last 5 seasons the Chiefs were expecitng him to put up much beter numbers. Lowery's indecisiveness ended up costing Kansas City a few victories that would've easily seen them land a spot in the playoffs. However Lowery still has 3 years on his contract with which to fix the situation.

                              Chiefs Review
                              -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Chiefs have a real shot at making it to the playoffs. If the Chargers prove to merely be a fluke then expect Kansas City to challenge Denver for the top spot of the division next year. Marty has really put this team together, and with the amazing running style of Christian Okoye there is no doubt that the offense will always have at least one offensive mastermind. If Steve DeBerg can stay healthy next year than they could easily win a couple more games and get through, not to mention if Nick Lowery starts hitting more field goals. The amazing Chiefs defense is young and continuing to improve year after year, with a deadly trio of linebackers, two of which can rush the hell out a quarterback, there is no doubt that the Chiefs could very easily become a top tier team over the next couple seasons. Look out NFL.

                                Indianapolis Colts Year Report
                                ================================================== =
                                Coach: Ron Meyer
                                Yrs: 8
                                Season Record: 9-7
                                Overall Record: 56 - 43 (.566)
Status: Ron Meyer has kept the Colts at a steady pace the past 5 years since head coaching. After taking over mid-season in 1986 and finishing it 3-0 Meyer looked to be the coach in Indy that could make a difference. However a 9-6-1, 9-7, 8-8, and now 9-7 following seasons have let much to be desired as the Colts are stuck in a rut, unable to break that imaginary barrier between them and playoff glory. Meyer only has one year left on his contract, so next year will be very important if he wants to impress upper management.

                                1. - HB Eric Dickerson 339att 4.3 avg 1,460yds 12td 1fum 34rec 274yds 2td
Info: Eric Dickerson put up yet another stellar season at the halfback position. It may not have been a replica of 1984 in terms of yards, but it was in touchdowns as he had 14 combined touchdowns this year, 12 on the ground and 2 in the air. The Colts suffered offensively from having a young rookie quarterback at the helm, so Dikcerson saw himself taking a few carries. Dickerson really surprised by only fumbling a single time, which the Colts recovered, the entire season. When you can touch the ball 373 times and only drop the ball once then youve got a reliable back. Dickerson easily won team MVP honors this year, and wants to shoot for the league one next year.

                                2. - ROLB Jeff Herrod 111 Tak 10 Loss 6 Sack 1 FF 3 Int 14 Deflect
Info: Jeff Herrod not only led the Colts defense in tackles, but this linebacker led the Colts in deflections as well with 14. He even came close to leading the team in sacks falling only one short of the team lead with 6. Herrod definitely proved himself to be a solid linebacker, and hell be turning 25 in the off-season so theres still plenty of time for him to tear things up on the gridiron.

                                3. - FS Mike Prior 86 Tak 5 Loss 3 Sack 5 FF 13 Deflect 9 Int 1 TD
Info: Nobody saw Mike Prior having the caliber of season that he pulled out this year. Priors 86 tackles was 2nd on the colts only to Jeff Herrod (111). In the meantime he led the team and the league with an outstanding 9 interception performance. He also proved that he wasnt a liability in coverage as he stacked up 13 deflections. He has a definite nose for the football as Mark Prior forced 5 fumbles, a team lead. The 27 year old free safety has finally come into his prime.

                                -------------------------------------------------------------
                                1. - QB Jeff George 247 of 472 att 52% - 2,283 yds 14 td 14 int 63.4 rat
Info: When you invest the kind of money the Colts did on the #1 overall pick of the 1990 NFL Draft, you expect a little return. While Jeff George did help to lead Indianapolis to 9 victories in the year, which some say is the most telling stat, you must remember that a large part was thanks to Eric Dickerson. But when your runningback has the same number of touchdowns as your quarterback thats generally an indication of a lackluster pass performance. George completed 52% of his passes and tossed up 14 interceptions, not what the Colts were hoping for. While he is still young and has a lot of time. Jeff George has all the raw talent and skill in the world to become a great NFL quarterback, but itll be up to him whether or not he wants to act upon it and take that road.

                                2. - RE Sam Clancy 26 Tak 6 Loss 3 Sack 1 FR 3 Deflect
Info: Sam Clancys year sure left much to be desired. His 26 tackles were worst of the defensive linemen that started, as were his palty 3 sacks on the year. Jon Hand had 7 opposite of him, dwarfing his accomplishments.

                                3. - CB Eugene Daniel 36 Tak 1 FF 10 Deflect 1 Int
Info: The key to winning many games is getting turnovers, but with the cornerbacks that the Colts have they didnt do much in terms of getting turnovers as displayed by Eugene Daniel. Daniels sole interception and a combined 3 between the starting cornerbacks was not very effective.

                                -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Indianapolis Colts have been stuck in a rut for many years now. They are on the cusp of breaking through and making a playoff impact, but year in and year out they either just fall short, or have a quick out. Eric Dickerson and co did their best this year but it just wasnt time. #1 pick Jeff George showed signs of ability in his first season, hopefully he can continue to improve and gather a solid year next season. The Colts dont need to change much at this point as their defense has really stepped up. A couple key players in free agency or the draft could help push them over the edge. That is of course assuming that no key players get injured.
