2005 NFL DRAFT PREVIEW (Mid-Season Report)
Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN - As the NFL nears the mid-way point of the season, teams are usually thinking two things. What can we possibly do to get ready for playoffs or what can we possibly do to improve our team in the draft next year? Teams such as the San Diego Chargers, New York Giants, and Carolina Panthers are looking to the incoming rookie class to help their teams next year. This is the first of a three-part series, as I'll look at the top seven quarterback, runningback, and receiver prospects eligible for the draft.
Derek Anderson out of Oregon State is the top quarterback coming out of this class. At 6'6", he's got the size and the arm strength to be a star some day. He isn't very mobile, but scouts point to Drew Bledsoe as a NFL similarity.
Aaron Rodgers out of Cal-Berkley is challenging Anderson for the top spot on draft boards. He's smaller than Derek but more mobile and has good touch on his throws. He might not come out for the draft, however, as he is only a junior.
Alex Smith is the third quarterback on this list. He is very athletic, but also is downgraded by playing in Urban Meyer's spread offense that is not common in the NFL. He has good size, but also plays in the Mountain West conference; not exactly the toughest.
Other quarterbacks are Kyle Orton of Purdue, Jason Campbell of Auburn, and Ryan Fitzpatrick of Harvard. A dark horse candidate is Adrian McPherson, formerly from Florida State. After losing his eligibility due to a blank-check scandal, he currently plays in the Arena Football League with the Indiana Firebirds where he was the Rookie of the Year last season.
