I think it set up a few things: Dexter's meeting with the FBI, the Debra/Joey thing, obviously Elliot is going to play a role in the whole thing.

sure, but those seem like small sub plots....some, if not all 3 things you mentioned could fade out real fast, or not even be mentioned

 

i just assumed thats the main direction for this season would be pointing to dex as ritas killer. But this episode didnt give me that feeling. it just doesnt seem like that is the main plot for this season.

Even if the FBI gives him a real look, there wont be anything to find based on what we saw already in episode 1. now it would come off as a copy of the doaks/dex story in S2, and this show is way better then that.
The stuff with Deb/Joe seems to be an after thought. Its clear why she wanted to fuck him. there isnt much left to do with that.

This show is missing its main bigtime plot right now. Or it just hasnt developed what we all thought that plot would be

i agree with Maynard about them being sub plots but i have this feeling that Deb may become pregnant or something by Quinn (don't know why, just got this feeling lol) just the way they came at the whole love him like your own with Harrison and she's gonna get the feeling of being able to care for a child and may want her own....

also one thing i didn't understand was when Dexter burnt down his shed, isn't it kinda strange that the shed in the backyard of their house just burnt down to the ground? lol, not sure if they'll come back to that or not, just seemed like a flaw in the episode

I think there is a good bit pointing to Dexter being the killer actually. Everyone always saying he isn't around...showing no emotion...he knew how the Trinity Killer murdered. I do doubt that they will make that the main plot though. Unluckily they may kill the show next season imo...it looks like they are attempting to start making Dexter to be more human like...and finish the show off by him evolving into a common person. He has been showing more human/empathetic characteristics. One thing that kind of let me down was that there was no mention of how Dexter just absolutely destroyed the code with that kill...mabye they will go back to it...or maybe it was because he told his father to forever hold his peace if he didn't talk right before then. All and all...great episode. I hope that they take this down a good route.

I think the episode set up the main plot fine. Quinn will delve deeper into the Kyle Butler thing, which will probably even eventually lead up to someone finding out that he kills people.

I didn't like the beginning. I felt they made Dexter act too laissez-fare regarding Rita's death. However, I felt they tied up those loose ends by the end of the episode with Dexter's emotional outburst at the gas station. Plus, they gave Dexter a built-in alibi when Angel and La Guerta talked about Dexter being the witness to their marriage. I don't think Dexter will be pursued much by the FBI this season. If anything, Quinn is going off the plantation and doing his own thing by looking into Dexter's personal life. He'll likely keep up a relationship with Deb to keep tabs on Dexter. Which will just be another man in her life that will end up fucking her over.

initially i was thinking the stuff in the shed would fuck up this episode. My thinking was the FBI would have more than likely checked the shed just as part of their investigation. And why they were not doing it was annoying me.
But then when he burnt it down i remembered that he moved all his stuff to a storage place after the S4 issue with his shed and they were gonna remove the AC unit to get in.
