You could have just written this and I would have agreed. She is, without a doubt, my least favorite character and has been since basically the start of the show.

This season is doing nothing for me. Since season 2, the show dipped to its lowest with season 3, then got better with season 4, and now it just hardly even seems like Dexter. I wasn't wild about the wrap up for all of the Rita stuff, and now this plot seems absurd even for Dexter. I'll still be watching, of course, but it being so recently that I had watched seasons 1 and 2, it's really evident to me how much the show has changed.

I keep trying to remember that this season won't compare to Season 4 because that season was so ridiculously epic, it can't be touched.

With that said, I am not either...it is like a mash up of Season 2 and 3.

Really? I thought Season 4 was good but no where near great, let alone epic. And nothing compares to season 2 and 1 (and I recognize I'm in the minority in thinking that season 2 is the best of the series).

Why? It was well written for half of it, and then went the cheap route similar to how it did with season 3. Both Prado and Miller changed in the course of 15 minutes of the season to inexplicably evil characters for seemingly no reason other than "they always were that way". That's bad writing. I feel like people look to favorably on season 4 because of the finale.

Season 2 was the best in my opinion because the characters as we knew them from the start of the show reached their apex of development and they were all compelling (save LaGuerta). Plus the writing was fantastic and it was the first time Dex seemed legitimately likely to get caught (without some lame write in to save his ass). Season 1 is season 1, which is to say just fantastic on its own. When I say I like season 2 over 1, it isn't by much.

I am honestly amused that you think season 4 is one of the best seasons of TV I'll ever see. You must not have seen much TV.

I do think that season 4 tends to get over-rated a bit because of the ending, I still think it was a VERY good season, but I agree that seasons 1 & 2 were better.

Season 2 was the worst one for me. Laila was an annoying twat who added the least amount of value to Dexter. Season 4 was the best because Dexter found a serial killer exactly like him and that brought a whole new ball game to the rules of Dexter, which as we know ended up getting Rita killed. Season 4 had the best villain and best psychological impact on Dexter.

I've seen this before and I don't understand. What new did Miller add? He added the POSSIBILITY of something new, but they stripped it away instantly when the writers realized "Dexter can NEVER be a family man -- he's a serial killer!" That's when the made Miller seem like a complete monster for no reason. He offered nothing new to Dexter's character that didn't exist in some fashion before ("Can I have people in my life with the dark passenger?" sort of stuff), he just offered that initial and compelling potential of the fact that MAYBE Dex could be a family man.

Lila became a bitch, but I think you're looking at it from an unfair lens. Before she turned out to be a psychotic arsonist, she was built as a VERY compelling romantic interest to contrast Rita (i.e. -- someone Dexter could somewhat share his addiction with). It was an interesting theme because clearly Lila's addiction was to masking her own issues with the issues of others, which made Dexter the ultimate catch, him being all dark and stormy like he is.

It's all opinion, I just think that season 4 had a lot of potential that it simply did not live up to. Miller went from this fantastic glimpse into the future of Dexter to just a run of the mill bad Dad/evil dude. It was fairly lame to me. Season 2 ran on multiple themes from Dexter finding himself (before that became a common theme), the validity of the code of Harry, and a reasonable situation in which he might get caught/get out of it. Now it's like they keep trying to figure out ways to make things seems crazy for Dex, and likewise, have to come up with just way too fantastical conclusions.

EDIT -- Also, I would say without a shadow of a doubt that the greatest psychological impact on Dexter in the entire course of the show was realizing that he did want his son. And that was in the worst season.

Sorry, yeah...I got back from seeing Death of a Salesman tonight so Arthur Miller is on the brain.

With Mitchell, they didn't randomly turn him into a monster. When Dexter first met him and started watching him, he only saw the outer shell, this nice family man who hid his secret in clear daylight, but once he cracked that shell, he saw him for the monster he was the whole time. That was great writing.

Now with season 2, Laila was the least satisfying because she she didn't do anything to Dexter as extreme as anyone else. She was a person thought he could share his problems with, but int he end she was just a crazy bitch who had her own problems. All she really added was a crappy love triangle for Dexter that was jsut as bad as the Angle-Laguerta storyline we had in season 4. I hated the Doax (sp?) scenario because he just handled Dexter all wrong, that practically laid a bread crumb of mistakes to set him up as the Butcher early on and ti was going to be awesome to see how Dexter handled him because he wasn't a bad guy, but then they did that cop out with Laila killing him and solving Dexter's problem.

this.....i thought lithgow role was nothing special. the storyline was kind of dull to me. and the way the whole thing played out in the finale seemed way out of place to dexters character. i also wasnt impressed with how they did the rita ending.

Really/ Not only was I completely floored because I love Julie Benz but after it happened I thought it was the perfect way to end the season. Not to mention Trinity telling Dexter "It's too late anyway" just before Dexter killed him on his table.

This season is interesting. He's setting himself up for disaster letting that girl live.
