Without spoiling anything, could anyone who's read the entire series speculate on long you'd expect this series to last?
Fifth book is coming out right around the time this season ends.
I'd expect it to tear down the whole story, but that depends on how much Martin gets done over the next 5 years, as he still has two more to go afterward, and considering he's a fat bastard with awful health and notorious for writer's block, he may never finish the series himself. 7 seasons at most...5 in the least?

Roughly 10 episodes a season I'd figure? At least I don't see any more than 10 for this season.
Still, that's pretty lengthy. I was afraid this wouldn't last longer than 20-25 episodes considering all the factors of the show.
Not surprised to see it knock off Gay Anatomy from the #1 spot on TV.com already.

The tv show does a good job of moving through the story at a really good pace without missing anything. I think it's 12 episodes a season so the entire 1st book look like its gunna fit into this season. But 3 and 4 are pretty long books, and 5's supposed to be the longest yet so those may take two seasons each if they pay attention to detail like they've done with this season, so it could take up to 6 seasons or so just to catch up to the 4th book.
What will be interesting is to see how they do the 4th and 5th seasons, since Martin essentially told half of the character's stories in one book, then the other half in the next one.
