How about Vanilla Ice? But for the wrong reasons. I mean we all remember him still to this day for his one hit wonder song that occurred 22 years ago.

For me, good music has just got "it". It doesn't matter what genre of music it is, you can recognize it. This is the music that will be remembered, and the music that kids will rediscover the same way I discovered the Smiths in my mom's CD player and was hooked. Let me also say that it doesn't take a huge catalog of music like the Beatles to be remembered in years to come. The Sex Pistols put out 1 album. An album that will be listened to until the end of the world.

Bands that will probably still be relevant/listened to in 40 years.... (regardless of my opinion of them, and from my era or thereabouts)

        U2
        Pearl Jam
        Metallica
        Nirvana
        The Ramones
        The White Stripes
        Radiohead
        GnR
        Beastie Boys

But there are people traveling far and wide to come see him this summer in AC? I think your opinion is a bit different than most peoples as well. That's why you're a hermit.

Jimmy Buffet will also be remembered as a great. Any artists that can consistently sell out shows now will be remembered in the future. I relate rap to doo-wop, which is consistently overshadowed by the rock music of the time. Rap's slowly phasing into more electronic type music, which will be the future (dubstep backings and heavy electronic synthesizer and auto-tune), but will also pass. Just regular good old rock, whether it's Jimmy Buffet or Metallica (The Beatles, Ramones) will be remembered over Kanye West or Eminem (The Penguins).

Mark my words, The White Stripes will be listened to in 40 years.
With their current repertoire I would never even have them cross my mind as legendary. But you're right, Jack White is amazing and he has potential to be legendary. I don't see my grandkids listening to Seven Nation Army in 40 some odd years, though.

edit: and can somebody please remove that Photobucket shit on my award showcase?

They helped kick off the blues/garage rock revival we've seen over the last decade and have done it better than anyone I've seen. They're probably not as huge as the other bands I listed, but I know they'll still be massively respected and listened to in 40 years.
I think they'll be respected the same way you and Relaxed respect past bands. People with high music knowledge will love them to death because of their talent, but their songs won't be as mainstream as some current examples, like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.

Great ghost edit, btw. Love that song.

I just don't think we'll ever see a band as big as the Beatles were. They were a band with 4 great musicians, who came around at a time when music wasn't so spread out over so many genres. Today it's hard to appeal to so many people because the accessibility of music ensures you can hear exactly what you want to hear.

Want to hear a band playing death metal to the sounds of fucking? You can find it.
                Bingo.

This is what I was trying to say when I said Kanye West does not have broad appeal. In terms of this discussion, who cares if he sells 3 million singles if 2 million of those people are college aged kids or younger. Plenty of commercially successful acts have little lasting appeal over decades.

Music has changed so dramatically in the last decade, that I see very few new acts that will stand the test of time like acts from the past. Things are just different now. Attenion spans are too short, and the digital era chages the way we treat and listen to music.

People dont fall in love with artists anymore. They just fuck songs.

Anyone ever have a fuck buddy that standed the test of time?

He's the lead guitarist/instrumentalist/singer of the Dave Matthews Band. Berry berry big in the white community. That's probably his most famous song.

edit: Wait, you are white. And have 'bama bangs. I know you know Dave, stfu. I thought you were BigBucs.

I also think Katy Perry has a chance to make a lasting impact. She's definitely off to a great start.

Not a huge fan, but I have not met a person that has disliked Katy Perry. Now I wait for the "Katy Perry SUCKS" trolling, but hell, I'd much rather my generation be associated with her than Kanye West.

My hatred has run deep for many years. One of my many bannings at MM was due to me bashing the shit out of that faggot band because one of the admins kept posting about them all the time. I forget who it was though. I know it was someone fairly popular at the time.

                                Anyways they do suck balls.
