Irish Posts His Top 21 Albums of 2011

So I turned 21 this year, there are 21 days until the end of the year, and I listened to a lot of music this year. This was my first year staying up to date with all new releases outside of the rap genre and it has been amazing. And because I just finished my fall semester I have plenty of time to sit around and listen to music again.

So for the next 21 day, I will post an album a day, maybe talk about it, and why it is in my top 21. Cool.

How does someone who hates everything (except Seinfeld and Notre Dame) enjoy not one, but 21 albums? I'm interested in this

              NUMBER 21

John Maus - We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves

John Maus - Hey Moon by figurehead blog

I am not much of a reviewer but it's whatever. Just listen to the album. The album is only 31 minutes but it leaves a lasting impact. Leaked over the summer and I honestly listened to at least 35 times in 2 weeks. Relistening to it now and it still sounds just as great as I remember. Very dreamy, 80s, lo-fi throughout; it brings a ton of energy and at the same time is very calming. His voice is a perfect story teller for the music he is creating and the whole album is a rush from start to finish.

I expect Adele's 21 to be on this list just to keep up with the theme.

SPUR OF THE MOMENT HONORABLE MENTION

Theophilus London - Lovers Holiday EP

Theophilus London - Why Even Try by DJ Ac_Coolbreeze

The "that sounds just like Kid Cudi" artist. I love this EP. Since it is only 5 songs, it's hard to consider it among the top 21 of 2011, but I knew as soon as I heard this EP way back early in 2011 that I had found an artist that just makes very good dance music. And as this list grows by the day you will begin to see I am very fond of dance music. The EP starts with Why Even Try, which I would consider a top 10 song this year for me. I love it so much. Strange Love and Girls Girls $ are kind of whack but still something different than I am used to hearing. I can appreciate that. Wine and Chocolates is his song that sounds right off a Kid Cudi mixtape, which for me isn't necessarily a bad thing. And then the final song Flying Overseas is a song I am real surprised didn't blow up. It is a great song paired with Why Even Try and really keep me coming back to Theophilus. His album Timez Are Weird These Days released over the summer and I was really hyped for it, but I have to say London let me down. Most of the songs on the album were some real snoozers besides the ones on this EP. Must have been hard to follow this up.

                        NUMBER 20

                        BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG

Bad Bad Not Good - Mass Appeal / Transmission by GrafikWar

Oh yeah those kids that covered Odd Future. I actually didn't get around to listening to this until much later after it released but boy is it awesomely jazzy. Basically a jazz/hip hop fusion where these kids cover songs like Mass Appeal by Gang Starr, The World is Yours by Nas, Joy Division and the Theme for Ocarina of Time. With plenty of albums released this year with jazz/hip hop influences that I did not like (Shabazz Palaces-Black Up), I really wasn't expecting for me to like this one too much. But this album is soooooo gooood. BBNG takes you thru so many highs and lows which makes it for a very enjoyable listen. It is weird to have an album filled with mostly covers on a top albums list, but the way they reinvent the sounds are just sooo good I continue to go back to this album. I like the rawness this album has and how these songs can stand apart from the originals and still be great.
