Buchholz is the guy I wouldn't like to see go because he's going to be good, but sometimes you need to make those tough moves. We traded away Hanley and ended up with an Ace and a World Series ring. Sure we're hurting at SS now, but we still contend year in and year out.
ill state once again, i dont think it would be a bad move, id do it probably

but in a sport where every move is criticized so much, just one of those players could turn around an organization. i mean if both anderson and bucholz pan out, their value over the next 3-5 years could arguably equal gonzos value for the next year or two

let alone adding kelly to that, who you said it yourself, is a great prospect

great prospects are worth A LOT in the game, especially today where finances are tight

i just dont see a team giving up a top tier prosepect, a high prosepect, and an MLB ready possibly soon-to-be ace for a couple years of agonzo

    just my 2 cents

Yeah i see where you're coming from, but Lars is coming off a rough year and IIRC his good seasons have been in minor league versions of hitter ballparks. Petco will do damage to a lot of power hitters, so we could get away with that.

I'm not comfortable with giving up both Kelly and Bucky, but i wouldn't be against it.

      It's all in Theo's hands.

words to live by. its all in theos hands. lol

and yeah, i guess after this i can see it happening, it would just surprise me a little (also scare me shitless being a giants fan, im not scared of the pads now, but with these prospects in a couple of years? oh shit)

and i also have a question, does this signing rule out you resigning jason bay (even though it seems as if you two wouldnt before this)

i wouldn't say it rules it out but it definitely diminishes it even more.

Matt Holliday was a more realistic chance than Bay judging by yesterdays news although neither were probably going to end up in Boston.

Wouldn't mind us going after a guy like Mike Cameron though. Possibly a 1 year deal for a lot of money, that way we can still be players next year in FA when Lowells/Ortiz's contracts are off the books and we don't have to worry about paying Holliday or Bay.

Thats the one thing that scares me about Lackey's deal, the dollar amount.

I agree, i think cameron will possibly be the steal of this FA class

so i guess your finances are ok if you can afford to sign holliday

and also, if i was a red sox fan, id be more scared at the fact that its five years

rooting for san fran, ill let you know there is nothing worse knowing that you are paying some guy exponential amounts of money to pitch when theyre old, untradeable, and at the end of their contracts

Yeah Pedroia is fun to watch.

Speaking of Free Agent signings, Theo isn't exactly the greatest when it comes to them.

Lugo, J.D Drew, Mike Lowell's large contract, some could say we overpayed for Dice-K.

                  Just throwing that out there.

Who cares if Boston overpays that is one of the advantages of working with the Red Sox. Having a ton of money to work with and throw around.

Lou Merloni wrote a piece on Lackey pitching in Boston. Good read,i'll link at the bottom.

Here's a little something i took out of it comparing Lackey and Beckett since 2006. Lackey hasn't started the prior two seasons until May and Beckett has had trouble closing down the stretch.

                          Josh Beckett (2006-2009)

                          65-34 (.657), 4.05 ERA, 122 GS, 792 IP, 723 K’s, 1.205 WHIP

                          John Lackey (2006-2009)

                          55-33 (.625), 3.50 ERA, 117 GS, 781.1 IP, 683 K’s, 1.243 WHIP

In 2007, Beckett (20-7, 3.27 ERA) was arguably the best pitcher in baseball. But when you look at what Lackey did that year (19-9, 3.01 ERA), you understand why some said the same thing about Lackey.

I don't really think the JD Drew signing was all that bad. I know we gave him a big contract but that was a year removed (I think) from Alfonso Soriano and Vernon Wells getting big contracts. So we did get him for market value imp and he has pretty much played the same if not better than both of them.

yeah i didn't mean to say that JD Drew has been bad, just think the dollar amount was high. That's a good point though.
