Fine, but when I say "nothing special", the point is that Garza didn't go out and win 20 games or win a Cy Young or put up a 2.00 ERA, which is probably what it would take for a guy who has been with the team for one season to overtake a guy who has been with the team for close to a decade for what is really an honorary thing like opening day starter.
If it is even close to being equal, most managers are going to go with the guy with tenure or with a veteran unless the new guy is a superstar or something. And a lot of teams save "the best guy" for the home opener these days.
In short, the outrage here is pretty silly. Nothing wrong with Dempster starting opening day.
