Marlins are really playing to the culture

I'm watching the local TV broadcast, and the bumper music (well, not really bumper music, thats the FOX Sports theme, but when they show the lineups, stat overlays, replays, etc) is SALSA, and all of the ticket/TV promos that run during commercial feel more like night club commercials. Latin music, flashing lights, etc. Somebody named Daddy Yankee, who appears to be a Pitbull knockoff act or some sort, is playing the new stadium after the game this Friday, and is being pushed heavily every commercial break. Combine that with "interesting" look of the stadium itself, with that garish dolphin thing and the live aquarium behind home plate, and you feel like it should be the Havana Marlins.

Do you see this as the future of sports marketing? If so, are the Sacramento Kings fucked?

Daddy Yankee is a popular reggaeton guy, been for years.

As for the question, anything to sell tickets.

      Lance Berkman agrees with you.

“I wasn’t real sure we were playing a baseball game, to be honest with you. It seemed more like an SEC football game for a while. But they did intend for us to play baseball. I found out about 15 minutes before first pitch.”

“There were a lot of shenanigans. The thing about it is, if I was building a new ballpark ... one of the things about baseball that people gravitate toward is nostalgia. That’s why people love Wrigley Field. They love Fenway Park. You can kind of step back in time."

"What they tried to do here is step forward in time. A lot of the things you normally associate with baseball ... you don’t see cheerleaders at baseball games. They were there tonight. You don’t see flamenco dancers. They were there tonight. You don’t see DJs and bands during the game. You saw that tonight. ... I’m not sure baseball fans embrace that kind of change.”
He also said he thinks the fences will be moved in within a year.
“It’s huge ... the biggest ballpark in the game,” Berkman said. “If they don’t move the fences in after this year, I’ll be surprised. I’ll go with two years with the over/under on that."

“People have tried this big ballpark deal and it never works. Detroit moved the fences in. New York moved the fences in. There’s a reason why it’s 330-375-400. That’s a fair baseball game. You try to get too outrageous, you end up with something that I think will be detrimental to their ballclub.”

When Juan Castro was on the Dodgers he would have one of the loudest batter walk-up reactions from the fans because of the mariachi music he came up to bat with. Just saying.

So, the fans in LA woke up from their naps when Castro came to the plate?

Marlins had cheerleaders when I went to a game back in 2007.

They didn't have cheerleaders, they just had scantily clad bimbos in feather boas who escorted all the starters onto the field when their name was announced on the PA. They were pretty sexy, so no objections from me.

So essentially, the same deal that Mexican lucha libre promotions do with ring girls.

One of my qualms with the Marlins intro/walk out was the exotic Cuban dancers were wearing outfits that covered their asses. You know some of them mamasitas had big latin bootys but we couldn't see any of them.
