Hanley Ramirez Traded to Dodgers

Choate has been he best lefty-on-lefty reliever since 2009, and our lefty bullpen guy (Scott Elbert) has been better against righties than lefties. Hanley is on the right side of 30 and he's a huge offensive upgrade over what we have now at short-stop and third - even if he doesn't return to previous glory. I was afraid we'd get a bum like Aramis Ramirez.

Eovaldi is a decent starter asked to do a lot as a 22-year-old, so it remains to be seen how good he can be (I think his best years will be from the bullpen). I've always liked Eovaldi but we really needed that offensive upgrade.

With Doyer-tinted-glasses I can look at this and hope that the change of scenery energizes Hanley. The Dodgers clubhouse has become incredibly positive since Mattingly took over, and now with the McCourts gone and Magic Johnson being a cheerleader - it'll be hard for Hanley to act like a shithead. Matt Kemp has become a phenomenal clubhouse leader - especially since he used to be a moron getting picked on by Nomar and Jeff Kent.

A big upgrade over Uribe and Herrera for sure but I don't like the trajectory that Hanley's career is heading and he's still due a lot of money IIRC.

And I think a few of you are sleeping on Eaovaldi. He's a quality pitcher and throws hard enough that he could at they very least be a good set up guy in the future.

Think about what they could have gotten for Hanley in 2010 compared to today.

The .720-ish OPS he's put up over the last two years will not cut it at a corner IF spot for most teams, and his defense hasn't been good either.

He wasn't a good defensive SS before he was fat, so he will be worse now, even though the OPS will play better there.

Peter Gammons was saying that a scout told him that Hanley is essentially a really expensive utility player at this point. I wonder if he can play LF.

I'm not sure I completely agree with that. He ranks 12th in the MLB in OPS for 3rd basemen. Barely behind Brett Lawrie. At SS his OPS would be tied for 6th in the majors at the position.

Obviously his last two seasons have been underwhelming relative to his previous career norms but he's still an upper half 3rd baseman and a top third SS offensively even this season.

I think the "utility player" comment is off base.

A 31 year old with a .700 OPS who makes $10M is not easy to move.

Phillies are trying to at least get a useful RP, but it looks like nobody is biting. They'll have to take some middling minor leaguers and pay most of that salary, I would imagine.

He wasn't producing enough for what he was getting paid. Plus he basically forced their hand (no pun intended) by punching a fan in the dugout, and fucking up his hand, which was the last straw with Ozzie and ownership. This allows them to clear payroll and spend it on someone else this offseason. It's still a huge upgrade for the Dodgers and it's another big name the fans can fall in love with.

Im happy about this trade. even if Ramirez continues the way he is currently playing, he is an upgrade over fat ass, useless uribe. he can play SS while gordon gets healthy, but cruz is playing better than uribe so i guess put ramirez at 3rd right away and leave ugly swing, foot in a bucket uribe on the bench for good.

Yea, Aramis' .321 batting average since the start of June would be horrible.......amirite?

Yeah because having a player who has consistently outperformed Hanley Ramirez, and is signed for less money is such a bad thing here.
