See now this is bullshit. Woy criticizes Greinke today, for taking it on the chin like a man. What should have Greinke done? Do anything he can to protect himself? Woy sure as hell wasn't complementing Johnny Cueto for doing anything possible to protect himself a few years ago, when he was kicking people with his cleats.
Carlos Quentin is a douchebag.

This is why I'm not completely clearing Greinke here. Is Quentin a douchebag? Yes. Was that pitch intentional? I don't think so.
But damnit, even if someone's charging at you, you should know better than to throw your shoulder into him when he's bigger than you. Greinke fucked himself there.
It wasn't an intentional beaning, Quentin has only been hit more times than everyone (did you read the point where he got hit more than anyone last year even though he was on the DL for almost 100 games?), and frankly, he shouldn't be so sensitive about it. He shouldn't even be considering charging. Greinke struck Quentin out badly early in the game and now he's getting a free base to lead off an inning in a one-run game? You shouldn't be itching to kick the shit out of someone over that.[REDACTED]Comment

Keep homering it up about :greinke: though.

Sequence of events:
1) Greinke accidentally hits Quentin with a pitch 4 years ago.
2) Quentin feels wrong by this innocent action and remains angry for four years.
3) Quentin is hit by countless other pitches
4) Greinke accidentally hits Quentin again last night
5) Quentin begins to charge the mount
6) Greinke takes off glove and says something (seems reasonable considering someone is charging him already)
7) Greinke's collarbone goes splat.
I think the blame for this is onesided. Quentin is a twat, with anger issues.
I hope the Dodgers trade for Kyle Farnsworth for the sole purpose of using him to throw at Carlos Quentin. That would be awesome.
I have a new found respect for Matt Kemp, must be a good dude.

I really don't understand why you are asking why he did it when there's been tons of instances with guys charging the mound without any reason other than they got plunked, looked at the pitcher and snapped. These 2 have a history of going at each other, and Quentin clearly didn't give a shit whether he meant it or not. He's been hit a shit ton, but it's similar to someone getting road rage after getting cut off even though it happens to them on a daily basis, you just snap without thinking at all.Comment

Well there you go. This is basically how I feel Quentin felt/acted. I don't think he was thinking (and therefore it didn't matter what the hell Greinke could've said) and I think that if he had been thinking, he would've been at first base instead. Instead, he charged the mound like a mindless asshole and crushed a guy who's about 20% lighter than he is. Now we have a very good pitcher on the DL and he'll get some forgettable suspension.
At least no punches were thrown.Comment

Quentin should have just jogged to first. If he had done this, nothing would have happened. Not only is Quentin "glaring" and "upset", he is also walking towards the mound with the bat in his hand instead of going to first. You seem to have 'glossed over' this minor detail.
You make it sound as if Quentin had no other choice in the matter, like "What else could he have done?" Amazing.[REDACTED]Comment

Quentin is a weirdo. He would stew in the dugout and locker room all the time and ended up costing himself an MVP by being an idiot with an anger issue and breaking his hand on a bat.Comment

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/doing-the-homework-on-greinke-and-quentin/
The biggest baseball event of Thursday night came outside of game action. In the top of the sixth inning of the Dodgers-Padres game in San Diego, Zack Greinke hitCarlos Quentin with a fastball on the wrist on a 3-2 count. After one step towards the mound, Quentin bull-rushed Greinke. As Quentin charged, Greinke threw his shoulder into Quentin’s body, and the result was a broken collarbone for the Dodgers’ starter. There is no timetable for Greinke to return to the mound; he will be examined by doctor Neal El Attrache on Friday.
Although we occasionally see this kind of aggressiveness from players without any prior provocation, it usually indicates some sort of history, either between player and team. A look into the pair’s past suggests there was already tension brewing, and said tension came entirely from Quentin’s end.
Greinke faced Quentin 28 times from 2008 through 2010, when Greinke was a Royal and Quentin a member of the White Sox. Twice, Quentin was hit by a Greinke pitch. The first came July 18th, 2008 as part of a six-run second inning. Greinke hit Quentin, the third batter of the game, with a pitch to the load the bases. Quentin would later homer off Greinke, but no tension of any kind was reported in any of thegame recaps I could find.
Things were not so clean on April 8th, 2009, when Greinke hit Quentin with a 1-1 fastball with the bases empty. Greinke had already thrown a pitch high-and-tightin the pair’s first face-off of the day, a swinging strikeout for Quentin. Greinke hit Quentin between the shoulder blades with his third pitch of the next at-bat, and Quentin took a step towards the mound — much like he did Thursday night — but was stopped by home plate umpire Bill Hohn before anything could escalate, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal
Quentin almost certainly had the feeling Greinke was gunning for him. If Quentin just saw the latter half of Greinke’s post-game quotes, it could have stoked the fire. “It happens. You hit guys sometimes,” Greinke said. Quentin may have regarded a few near misses against his former White Sox teammates during Greinke’s time in Kansas City as malicious
But it’s hard to imagine Greinke was actually throwing at Quentin. If the partial quote above sounds cold, it’s just the way he talks about these things. Here’s the first half: “The first at-bat kind of scared me because you never want to do that to anyone.” And although Greinke picked up strike one on an inside pitch, he would need awfully poor control to miss this poorly on the first two pitches if he were actually aiming for the 6-foot-2, 235 pound outfielder. I was unable to find any post-game comments from Quentin.
To think Greinke was gunning for Quentin in the sixth inning Thursday night seems just as absurd. Quentin was hit by the sixth pitch of the at-bat, four of which were on or outside the outside corner of the plate. Quentin was the leadoff hitter in a one-run game. His pinch runner, Alexi Amarista, eventually scored the tying run. Neither the situation nor the pitch selection suggests intent at all.
But judging by Quentin’s post-game comments, he sensed something malicious from the Dodgers’ righty in the past. Via MLB.com’s Corey Brock:“It’s unfortunate about the situation,” Quentin said. “It could have been avoided. You can ask Zack about that. For me, I’ve been hit by many pitches in my career. I think you guys know that. I can tell you I’ve never responded in that fashion, so you guys can do your homework on that. For me, the situation is done. That’s it.”Quentin is vague, but it seems like he must be referencing the April 2009 game. And if so, Quentin seems extremely, extremely petty. Was there something said after one of the pitches? It’s the only way I could see Quentin having anything approaching a legitimate beef. As is — and I’ve done the homework — Quentin’s actions not only appear malicious, but completely unjustified as well.
Chicago White Sox understand Zack Greinke's inside game
But they also know he has history of hitting their batters
July 03, 2009|By Mark Gonzales, Tribune reporter
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Zack Greinke's 10 victories, 1.95 ERA and 96-m.p.h. fastball all catch the attention of the White Sox.
But there's also this: Nine of the 29 batters Greinke has hit in his career have been Sox hitters.
There also have been some near-misses, such as fastballs that buzzed near the heads of Carlos Quentin on April 8 and Alexei Ramirez on May3.
The Sox realize Greinke pitches inside to make his sharp-breaking slider effective, but they've vowed they won't bail out when he takes the mound Friday night.
"I think we have some pretty tough hitters who have a good approach," said Jermaine Dye, a lifetime .385 hitter against Greinke. "He knows he has to keep us honest and pitch in. He's not necessarily trying to hit anyone, but we have been one of those clubs he just tries to keep honest to make his slider more effective."
Last August, Greinke hit Nick Swisher and was ejected. It was a retaliation pitch after Sox reliever D.J. Carrasco nailed Royals catcher Miguel Olivo, who charged the mound.
Greinke has hit four Oakland Athletics -- second most but still five fewer than the White Sox.
"[Greinke] is a great pitcher and I don't think he's going to hit people just because he wants to hit people," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We brushed everything out, but the game will dictate to me what to do and what not to do. When you play this game long enough, you know when people get hit and when they pitch inside.
"I don't care what managers say, I don't care what pitchers say. If they want to throw inside, we're adults. That happened last [weekend] with [Carlos] Zambrano. Everyone knew Zambrano hit [Dewayne Wise and Scott Podsednik intentionally]. But it's something you have to deal with and be careful with."
