Dumb signing, but if you win just one WS, it makes it worth it IMO

Ellsbury is the type of player to put a team over the top? Oh.

Just one? So just one year makes this worth it?

            That's how baseball works, right?

Well economically it might. How much money would the Yanks generate if they won the World Series?

A great way to ensure revenue generation would be to not pay dudes $200 million. They bring in so much money that I don't think you can really attribute a "World Series" run to any substantial increase in revenue at this point.

I tend to defend a lot of FA deals because in reality just about all of them are overpays, and if you don't overpay these guys you simply won't ever get anybody, but this deal can't really be defended.

                  Also, this:

What? No.. but he's an above average player that would start on any WS team (cough Red Sox cough)

Yes... winning a title is hard. Winning just ONE in any series of playoff runs makes spending worth it.

So why would this contract be validated by a world series title again?

Normally I would agree with Jayrock, but not in the case of the Yankees.

If this was the Mariners or Padres or something going all in for a title & spending crazy money, then yes, I think one title justifies it.

I've heard that one a lot from Giants fans. "Barry Zito has the worst contract ever, but we won the World Series twice with him on the roster so it was worth it."

Don't they already have an oft-injured speedster outfielder in Brett Gardner for a lot less?

That's what I was thinking. Also, that was the reason they didn't end up signing Crawford. Cashman even went as far as to imply that they only bid on Crawford to make the Red Sox pay more. I guess the major difference between Crawford/Gardner and Ellsbury is the fact that Ellsbury has shown the ability to hit for power as a pull hitter (like Granderson).

First McCann, then Ellsbury, and now Kelly Johnson. The Yankees' front office is really banking on that short porch to pay dividends on all of these lefty pull hitters.
