Pirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated Sunday that Edinson Volquez will be part of the team's rotation in spite of his struggles this spring.

Advice: Volquez has allowed 13 runs -- 11 earned -- while walking five batters in nine innings this spring, but the Pirates evidently aren't overly concerned with the results. With Volquez virtually assured of a starting job, that means Jeff Locke will likely be in the bullpen or possibly at Triple-A. Volquez can't be trusted in fantasy leagues.

    ------------

How does this man, with a PED suspension, a history of arm trouble, and awful walk rate, and being perhaps the worst full time SP in the majors over the last two or three seasons, keep winning rotation spots??

There is a whole lot more that can be done with $5 million than sign Edinson Volquez. Hell, for $5 million you can sign 3-5 reclamation projects on one year contracts and one of them is guaranteed to perform better than Volquez.

Jonathan Sanchez won a job out of ST for the Pirates last year and was out by the middle of May. Can't see Volquez lasting much longer than him, and I can't see why Pittsburgh just doesn't throw some AAAA guy like Cumpton out there until Taillon's good to go.

I have no clue why you even mess with Volquez after Bud Black couldn't fix him, they gave him every opportunity to figure it out in San Diego and the guy still stunk.

Very tough break for Profar, and for MLB fans who were looking forward to watching him. It sounds like there are no long-term implications so that's always good to hear.

This is one of the funniest quotes I've ever read from a baseball player. Breaks my heart that these two guys won't be around this year.

By the way, just one more thing about Medlen. He provided one of the funniest moments for me all spring when I asked him about Beachy, whose locker is next to his in the spring-training clubhouse. This was in late February, when Beachy’s recovery from September arthroscopic elbow surgery was going well, a few weeks before he blew out again and had his second TJ surgery last week.

I was asking Medlen about Beachy’s work habits and how he appeared to be in about the best condition of anyone on the team, save for perhaps Jason Heyward. And Medlen couldn’t resist poking fun (Beachy wasn’t around) at his pal, who is, let’s just say, popular among much of the female portion of Braves fans in a way that Javy Lopez was.

“I mean, I’m in shape but I don’t look like that,” Medlen said. “Body types and whatever else. He could be the, I mean you’re walking through the mall and your hear the (and this is where it got hilarious, as Medlen suddenly broke into human beatbox thing, emulating electronic or heavy-bass music or something) at Abercrombie & Fitch and you look over and smell all that cologne in that little part of the mall, and you look over and Brandon Beachy is doing a shirtless flex job on the pictures for Abercrombie. I mean, he’s that guy. I think even if he weren’t a baseball player, he would still look exactly the same and all that.

What are the chances of him being anywhere close to this year's Jose F? Flamethrower and filthy curve, won the 5th spot out of spring.

Conservatively, I think it's safe to say he'll post at least a mid 3s ERA with K rates approaching a batter an inning. Not sure how the velocity will play throwing every 5th day, or how many innings KC plans to let him go, but if he settles in at 95-97 with that hammer I think he can certainly hold his own for a full year. We'll need a smiley of him soon.
